To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chapman, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved package tie especially designed for use in connection with bundles of letters or other papers and has as its primary object to provide a device of this'character which may be readily applied and which will hold the papers of the bundle firmly together.
The invention has as a further object to provide a package tie of such construction that the necessity of winding a flexible element about the package and then securing the free end thereof will be eliminated, a package tie of the character indicated being very inconvenient to apply and its use resulting in av loss of time.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a package tie possessed of such simplicity of construction as to recommend its universal use.

In carrying out my invention, I employ crossed members 10 and 11 which form'the body portion of the tie. These members may be formed from strips of leather, sheet metal, or any other suitable material. The member 10 is somewhat longer than the member 11 which is arranged at substantially right angles to the member 10 and is secured thereto at a point substantially midway its ends by a rivet or other suitable form of fastening device.
Connected at its ends to one end of the member 10 and to one end of the member 11 is a flexible element 12 While a similar element 13 is connected at its ends to the opposite extremities of the said members. The ele ments 12 and 13 may be formed of cord,
elastic, or any other suitable material and the extremities of the said elements are pref erably passed through suitable openings formed in the members 10 and 11, and terminally knotted as shown at the point where the member 10 is broken away. It will now be noted that the elements 12 and 13 define loops adapted to receive opposite corners of a bundle of letters, as illustrated in dotted lines upon the drawing.
The member 12 at a point substantially midway its ends, is provided with a knot or other suitable form of stop 1% and connected to the said element is a hook or other suit able fastening device 15. The hook 15 preferably formed from a single length of wire bent intermediate its ends to provide a bill. The extremities of the wire are then brought together in parallel relation to form a shank with the ends of the wire looped around the element 12 upon opposite sides of the knot 11 for connecting the hook with the element. The knot 1 1 is thus adaptedto prevent longitudinal shifting of the hook upon the element 12 and the bill of the hook will be normally presented upwardly away from the members 10 and 11.
The element 13, at a point substantially midway its ends, is folded upon itself into overlapping relation to form a terminal 16 which is provided at longitudinally spaced points with knots or other suitable form of stops 17. In use, the members 10 and 11 are placed flatly against the bottom of the bun dle and opposite corners thereof are inserted in the loops defined by the elements 12 and 13, as previously indicated. The hook 15 is then arranged to seat flatly against the top of the bundle with the bill of the hook projecting upwardly. The terminal 16 of the element 13 is then grasped and is adjustably engaged with the hook by one of the knots 17. The tie may thus be readily and easily applied to firmly hold the papers of the bundle together and it will be noted that I provide a construction eliminating the use of a flexible element which must be wound about the bundle and then terminally sestruction, the knotted terminal 16 of the preferred form of the invention is eliminated and the hook 15 is engaged directly with the element 13 since, the view of the resiliency of the members 10 and 11, an adjustable connection between the loops will not be necessary. Otherwise, the construction disclosed in this modification is identical with that of the preferred form of the invention and a further description thereof will accordingly not be given.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A tie of the character described including a body portion adapted to lie upon one side of a package, flexible elements secured at their extremities to the body portion with the intermediate portions of said elements defining co-acting loops free with respect to each other for engagement over the package, and means for connecting the intermediate portions of said loops upon the side of the package opposite the body portion.
2. A tie of the character described including crossed members adapted to lie upon one side of a package, flexible elements connected at their extremities to the extremities of said members with the intermediate portions of said elements defining co-acting loops having their intermediate portions free with the said loops free with respect to each other for engagement over the package, and means for connecting the intermediate portions of said loops upon the side of the package opposite the said members.
3. A tie of the character described including crossed members secured together and adapted to lie upon one side of a package, flexible elements secured at their extremities to the extremities of the said members with the intermediate portions of said elements free to define coacting loops free with respect to each other for engagement over the package, and a hook freely connected to the intermediate portion of one of said loops and engaging the intermediate portion of the other loop for connecting the said loops upon the side of the package opposite to the said members.
4. A tie of the character described includ ing crossed members, flexible elements secured at their extremities to the extremities of said members with the intermediate portions of the said elements free and defining coacting loops free with respect to each other for engagement over the package, a stop carried by one of said flexible ele ments, and a hook connected to the said element upon opposite sides of said stop and engaging the other of said elements for connecting the intermediate portions of said loops upon the side of the package opposite to the said members with the said stop adapted to hold the hook against shifting movement longitudinally upon the said first mentioned element.
5. A tie of the character described including a body portion adapted to lie upon one side of av package, flexible elements carried by the body portion and defining coacting loops free with respect to each other for engagement over the package, a fastening device carried by one of said loops, and means carried by the other of said loops and adapted to engage said fastening device for adjustably connecting the intermediate portions of said loops upon the side of the package opposite to the said body portion.
6. A tie of the character described including a body portion adapted to lie upon one side of a package, flexible elements carried by the body portion and defining coacting loops free with respect to each other for engagement over the package, a fastening device carried by one of said loops, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced stops carried by the otherof said loops and adapted for selective engagement with said fastening device for adjustably connecting the in termediate portions of saidv loops upon the side of the package opposite to the said body portion.
7. A package tie including a body portion formed of cross strips arranged at substantially right angles to each other and secured together at their intersection, flexible elements each having their extremities respectively secured to an extremity of each of said strips with the intermediate portions of the said elements free to define package receiving loops free with respect to each other, and means for connecting the intermediate portions of the said loops.
