Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 18,1914. Serial No. 832,764.

To all whom it may] concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAMT. TIMMER- M'AN, a citizen of the-United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Fastening Devices for -Packages, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fastening devicesfor. packages of various kinds, as for exafnple bundles of'letters, school books, the mouths of bags, and in fact any package whichit is desired to securely fasten and readily unfasten.

' The object of the invention is to provide devrce, simple and IHGXPGIISIVE in construe tion, easily applied, securdend released, and which, when secured, will not yield'in any manner except when manipulated to effect its release.

I will describe preferred embodiments of the invention and then point out, the novel features in claims.

In the accompanying-drawings, Figure l is a 'perspectiveview of a portion of a bag with my fastening device applied to the mouth thereof; Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 are plan views of different forms of the-fastening de-' vice; Fig. at is a perspective view of a bundle of books secured together by a further modification of my fastening device; ig. 5 is a similar view of a bundle of letters secured together by my fastening device.

The fastening device consists of two strands'of flexible material extending side by side and an abutment at or near one end of said strands. -Preferably the two strands will be formed by doubling a single piece of flexible material. to form a loop and the abutment will be at or near the looped end o'f-the two-strands. The other, or free ends of the two strands will preferably be con nected together by a knot as in Figs. 1, 2, ,"3 and 5 or by a rivet or other suitable fastening means as shown in F ig. 4:- The' flexible strands may consist of round cord as in Figs. 1, 2, 3-and 5' or of fiat webbing, or a strip of leather as in Fig. 4.

Referring now to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and '5 the two strands of flexible material are indicated by 10-10 and as shown are formed from a single. piece of cord folded substantially midway its length to form a loop 11 and the free ends of the two strands are tied together. in a knot as indicated by 12.

By open member of rigid material, I mean to include any device provided with an opening and made of material which is sufficiently rigid to withstand the strain r'esul t ing from fastening and which retains sub stantlally its original shape. In Fig. 3 the abutment is formed by tying a knot 17 in both strands near the loop 11, and the looped portion'of the strands extending beyond the knot 11 will form a finger hold the same as the ring 13 or the I bar 14.

In Fig. 4 the flexible strands 1O10 are formed from a single piece of flat metal,

' such as webbing, tape or leather, doubled to free end portions are then folded in between the two strands beneath the abutment and outwardly between themselves and then drawn tightly. The abutment crowds the different portions of the flexible strands, which-are thus brought adjacent thereto, tightly together and outward pressure on thestrands caused by expansion or positively applied force tends only to more firmly secure the fastening. To release the abutment in a direction opposite tothe" dii. fastening it is only necessary to pull the rection of pull on the free ends of the strands when securing the fastener about the package, and the interlocking parts of the strands will slip apart,

When the fastening is used for bags, the flexible strands 10-10 may be permanently secured to the bag by means of a staple 19, as indicated in Fig. 1, orby any other suitable securing devices.

Having described my invention, I'claim 1. Afastening device for packages and,the like comprising two strands of flexible material and an abutment adjacent to one end of said strands, said flexible strands. having at least'one turn around the package with the loose end portions crossing over and extending beyond the abutment, one on each side thereof, then passing over and between the strands and beneath the abutment and outwardly between themselves. 2. A fastenin'g device for packages and the like comprising an open member of rigid material having a curved portion, 'a piece of flexible material doubled to'form a loop'and two strands passing through the curved portion of the open member and also through the loop and being drawn tightly to bring the loop outside the said curved portion, and said loop forming an abutment; said flexible strands having at least one turnaround the package'with the loose end portions crossing over and extending beyond the abutment, one on each side thereof, then passing over and between the strands adjacent to the iii/l pose of releasing said device, said two strips =3ord s having at least one turn around the bag or package, andthe other end portions thereof passing over and in between said strips at a point'in the rear of said abutment and extending beneath and beyond the same.- 4:. A- fasteningdevice forbags, packages. and the like, comprising two strips or cords provided with an abutmentv near one end thereof, said strips or cords having a turn around the bag or package, and the other 'end'portions thereof passing over and in between saidstrips or cords at a point in the rear of said abutment, extending beneath and beyond the saine and adaptedto be grasped and'pulled in one direction to tighten the fastening, and a finger holdadjacent to the abutment to be grasped; to pull the abutment in the oppos te directlon to release the fastening.
