DRAFT-HIGGING FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
Application filed March 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, dons l ()CoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at (hit-ago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Draft-Riggings for liailwaydlars. of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to draft riggings for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and safe means for connecting a yoke, particularly a two part yoke to a draw bar.
In the drawings forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of parts of a draft rigging embodyingmy invention. Fig. 2 IS a horizontal section taken on line 29 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, vertical, sectional view of the rear .end of the coupler or draw bar. Fig. i is a detail view in horizontal section of a draw bar butt at the forward end of the draft yoke illustrating a modification in which no coupler key is employed.
l'leferring to the drawings, the numerals 5-5 indicate draft members or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is applied, (3( front stop members, 7 a draft yoke S a tie plate, 9 a draft gear shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawin f, and 10 a front follower shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be understood that any suitable draft gear capable of being mounted within a yoke of the type disclosed may be employed without affecting my invention. The draft yoke 7 is a. two part yoke comprising a pair of parallel vertically arranged loops 2020. The draw bar is indicated at the numeral 11, only the rear end thereof being shown in the drawing. The draw bar is provided with a transverse key slot 12, the periphery of which at either end is surrounded .by a boss 13, extended outwardly from the lateral faces of the draw bar. Each loop 20 of the draft yoke 7 is provided at its forward end with a vertical plate 1% connecting the forward ends of the loop, each of said plates being provided with a transverse perforation 15, each being adapted to be Specification of Letters Patent.

entered by a boss 13 of the draw bar. When the draw bar and yoke are in assembled relation the plates 14; of the yoke are adjacent the sides of the draw bar, the boss 13 ateither side extending through the apertures 15 in the yoke. The two parts of thepass through the transverse perforation 12 in the draw bar, which key for convenience ]Il removal 1s extended at its ends through the elongated slots 18 provided in the adacent stop members and draft members. In Fig. 4. of the drawings the connection between the yoke and draw bar is shown, and in this illustration the key 17 is not employed. The absence of the key, as will be readily understood, will obviate the no cessity of providing the slots in the adjacent stop members and draft members. In assembling the yoke and draw bar, the two loops of the yoke are placed in position upon the bosses 13 of the draw bar and the same is then mounted between the draft members and in the preferred form, the keyv 17 is then inserted.
I claim:
1. In a draft rigging for railway cars, in combination, a slotted draw be? having laterally extended bosses, a draft yoke comprising a pair of loops having connecting plates at their forward ends, and a coupler key, the lateral plates of the yoke being perforated to receive the bosses of the draw bar, the coupler key passing through the slot of the draw bar.
2. In a draft rigging for railway cars, the combination with a draw bar having a transverse slot therethrough, the draw bar being provided with laterally extended bosses surrounding the terminals of said slot, of two-part yoke, each part having a plate at its forward end perforated to receive said bosses, whereby a coupler key is adapted to be extended through said slot and the perforations in the yoke part.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 2nd day of February ldlfi.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
