Description

1. F. OCONNOR. D'RAFT YOKE FOR RAILWAY CAR DRAFT RIGGING APPLICATION FILED JUNE 6, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. OCONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHAZY, NEW YORK.
IDRAFT-YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CAR DRAFT-RIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 4, 1921.
Application filed .Tune 6, 1919. Serial No. 302,251.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Yokes for Railway-Car Draft-Riggings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft yokes for railway car draft riggings.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong, eflicient, simple and easily-made draft yoke.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a draft yoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the forward portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. And Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a draw bar, the rear portion only of which is shown. 11 indicates a yoke head of general hollow box-like form, laterally provided with the key slots 12-12 for the passage of the coupler key 13, which extends therethrough and through the key slot 141 in the draw bar. At its rear end,
Ithe yoke is provided with a rear-connecting member 15, which is of hollow boxlike form having the sides 16-16 and top andbottom, 17 and 18, respectively. The ordinary yoke bar employed in a yoke strap in common construction is 19g inches thick. I purovide a yoke of greater strength and which in manufacture eliminates the necessity for diflicult forging, by using for the yoke arms two members, each smaller than the usual size-as, for instance, each may be of an inch in thickness. These upper and lower sets of bars are indicated respectively at 19-19 and 20-20. All the bars 19 and 2() are provided with perforations or rivet holes 21-21 at each end to accommodate the front and rear sets of short rivets 22 and 23, re-
spectively. The bars 19 and 2O are applied to the yoke head 1l and rear connecting member 15 by putting two of the bars on the inner sides of said head and rear con necting member and two of the bars on the outer side thereof so that the rivets 22 and".
23 will be placed under double shear as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. l. Not only are forging diliiculties and other difficulties eliminated by this construction, but, in addition thereto, I place all of the said rivets employed in double shear, thus insuring a strong, eiicient and durable yoke, one of simple construction employing only straight hars with no necessity for heating or bending the yoke material in order to bring it to the necessary form for'use in a draft rigging construction.
I claim:
1. In a yoke for railway draft riggings, the combination with outer and inner members each provided with upper and lower walls; of upper and lower pairs of connecting arms, one arm of each pair being disposed on the inner sides of saidy members and the other arm of each pair being disposed on the outer sides of said members; and means for connecting said arms at their ends with said members.
2. In a yoke for railway draft riggings, the combination with a hollow substantially box-like yoke head having top, bottom and side walls; of a rear connecting member of substantially hollow rectangular form and provided with upper, lower and side walls; an upper pair pf longitudinally extending arms, one arm being disposed on the inner sides and the other arm on the outer sides of the upper walls of said head and member and secured at their ends thereto; and a lower pair of arms, one disposed on the inner sides and the other on the outer sides of the lower walls of said head and member and secured at their ends thereto.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 26th day of May, 1919.
JOHN F. OCONNOR.
