To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWIN STANLEY BART- LETT, S12, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented an Improvement in Animal-Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in ani mal shears and has particular reference to clippers for shearing sheep.
Heretofore, animal shears have been constructed in which there is provided a housing or casing having a removable cover, a portion of which is shaped to provide a raised hood in which is mounted a bearing and tension device for one end of a dolly pin, the other end of which engages a vibrator adapted to operate the cutters. In all known constructions of this character the bearing and tension devices, previously mentioned, are so located that some portion thereof extends above the top of the hood. This is an objectionable feature in that projections are exposed which hinder the progress of the shears through the wool by catching and tearing the same, thus causing considerable delay and thereby depreciating the value of the implement. It is also essential to the perfect operation of devices such as have been described, that the bearings for the dolly pin be accurately located and held in position so that a uniform pressure be tween the cutters will at all times be maintained. Previously designed shears have been defective in this respect owing to the fact that the upper bearing and tension device for the dolly pin are located beyond the outermost portionof the cover or hood in which they are mounted. There is a certain degree of lateral or side thrust upon the outer end of the dolly pin occasioned by the oscillations of the vibrator which thrust is, in turn, transmitted to the bearing and tension device for said pin. Therefore, with a portion of said bearing and tension device projecting beyond the hood, as described above, said vibrations will have the effect of loosening the mounting of the tension device which will result in a disturbance of the exact relative relation of the difierent parts,
which is essential in order to obtain the uniform pressure between the cutters.
The present invention is designed to overcome the above objections and to this end provides 'a hood or elongated dome which is adapted to surround the tension device for the dolly pin so that no portion of said device will project beyond the end of said hood, thereby permltting an easier and more rapid manipulation of the shears through the wool. lVhen thus mounting the tension device the adjustment therefor is positioned in the hood intermediate the ends of said dolly pin. The hood, therefore, provides a bearing for the entire tension device which results in preventing undue stress thereupon by reason of the lateral thrust of the dolly pin caused by the vibrator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and compact in construction, easy to manufacture, durable, and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.

Referring to the drawing, the device preferably comprises a casing 5 with a removable cover 6 held in position by means of a plurality of set screws 7 and provided at its outer end with the hood or dome portion 8 having a longitudinal passage 9 extending therethrough. At the forward end of the casing 5the same has fixedly secured thereto a plate 10 the free end of which provides the fixed cutter 11. Mounted in the casing 5 is the operating shaft 12 which is connected to a suitable source of power at one end and provided at its other end with a crank disk 13 having a crank pin connection 11 with the inner squared end 15 of the vibrator 16. The latter is adapted for oscillation within the casing and for this purpose there is mounted in said casing a pivot post 17 adapted to engage a bearing 18 carried by the vibrator 16 intermediate its ends. Thus it will be seen that said vibrator is fulcrumed upon the post 17 and when caused to oscillate will actuate the cutters 19 carried thereby so as to cooperate with the fixed cutter 11.
It is essential in shears of this character that a sufficient and uniform pressure be maintained between the fixed and movable cutter elements and for this purpose there is usually employed a dolly pin 20 one end of which has a bearing 21 in the vibrator 16 intermediate the bearing 18 and cutter 19. There is also provided a bearing for the other end of the dolly pin 20 which is adjustable by means of a device adapted to regulate the amount of pressure exerted upon the vibrator at its point of contact with the lower end of the dolly pin 20. The improvement which comprises the essential feature of this invention has particular reference to the last-named mounting for the dolly pin and includes a tension device in the form of a sleeve 22 which is mounted in the longitudinal passage 9 of the hood 8. The outer end of the sleeve 22 is preferably made flush with the outer end of the hood 8 so that there will be no projection which might possibly catch and tear the wool when the shears are being used. The outer end of the sleeve 22 has mounted therein a bearing 23 for the upper end of the dolly pin 20. This tension device is also preferably provided with a machined surface adjacent its outer end as indicated at 24 so as to provide a flush contact with the adjacent machined surface of the passage or bore 9, said tension device being prevented from rotation in said passage 9 by means of a key 25. Intermediate the ends of the passage 9 the same is enlarged to receive therein a milled nut 26 which projects slightly beyond the outer surface of the hood 8 so that the same may be easily rotated and said nut is internally threaded to engage the threads formed upon the tension device 22 whereby the latter may be adjusted longitudinally of the passage 9 when it is desired to increase the pressure of the dolly pin 20 upon the vibrator 16 which pressure is gradually decreased by reason of the wear of the dolly pin upon its bearings. The interior surface of the sleeve is tapered as indicated at 27 so as to permit of the freedom of movement of the dolly pin as the same is actuated by the vibrator 16. It will thus be apparent that owing to the mounting of the'tension device in the hood the side thrust of the upper end of the pin caused by the actuation thereof will not have the effect of loosening said device in the hood since the strain caused by said side thrust would be directly against said hood and through the entire casing.
What is claimed is V 1. In animal shears, the combination with a casing having a dome portion provided with a smooth exterior surface and having a bore and fixed and movable cutters carried by the casing; of a dolly pin having one end mounted in said bore for applying a uniform pressure to said movable cutter, an adjustable tension device including a sleeve mounted in said bore and having its outer end surrounded by the outer end of said dome portion, and a removable bearing member for said pin mounted in the outer end of the interior surface of said sleeve.
2. In animal shears, the combination with a casing having a dome portion provided with a smooth exterior surface and having a bore and fixed and movable cutters carried by the casing; of a dolly pin having one end mounted in said bore for applying a uniform pressure to said movable cutter, an adjustable tension device including a sleeve mounted in said bore and having its outer end surrounded by the outer end of said dome portion, a removable bearing member for said pin mounted in the outer end of the interior surface of said sleeve, and means mounted in said dome portion and engaging the sleeve intermediate its ends for adjusting the same to regulate said pressure.
3. In animal shears, the combination with a casing having a dome portion provided with a smooth exterior surface and an internal bore, and fixed and movable cutters mounted in said casing; of a dolly pin for applying a uniform pressure to said movable cutter and having one end extending into said bore, a tension device including a sleeve mounted in said bore and provided with screw threads fora portion of its length, means for permitting rotation of said sleeve in said bore, a detachable bearing mounted in the outer end of said sleeve and adapted to receive therein the outer end of said dolly pin, and a milled nut mounted in said dome portion and engaging the threads of said sleeve intermediate its ends and also intermediate the ends of the dolly pin for adjusting said sleeve longitudinally of the bore to regulate the pressure on said dolly pin.
