Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CoRNnLIUs C. HAST- INGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in paper cutting machines. Such machines are generally arranged so that the knife, in cutting any stock, has to be both raised and lowered by the operator who estimates the extent of elevation of the knife necessary for the stock being cut.
This invention has for its object to provide means for automatically raising the knife, with respect to the cutter-board of such machine, just the right amount for the stock being out immediately after the knife has been lowered.
In the drawings forming part of this application,-Figure 1 is a plan view of a paper cutter embodying the invention, a part thereof shown in section to better disclose said part. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
In the drawings forming part of this application,-c represents the table of a papercutter. The knife I) with the handle a is pivoted on one side of the table and fixed on the shaft t which is rotatably mounted in the casting m on the side of the frame. The knife is held against the side of the cutterboard by means of the spring 72, which has one end fastened to the casting m and the other end fastened to a nut g which engages a screw-thread on the shaft 2'. As the nut g is turned toward or away from the casting, it will put the spring h more or less under torsional stress accordingly.
It will be seen that if the nut g is held from turning on the screw-thread on the shaft 71 while the spring is under stress, said spring will operate to turn the shaft '5 through the nut g and relieve the stress. This operation is used in raising the knife 7) after a cutting operation. The knife 6 is raised more or less according to the amount of stress which is put on the spring h. The nut g is used to regulate the amount of stress of the spring h by movement toward or away from the casting on the frame, and after the stress has been thus regulated the lock-nutf is used to fix the nut g in its adj usted position. This lock-nut or jam-nut 7" operates on a smaller pitched thread 6, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus efliciently jams against the nut g for the desired purpose.
Referring to Fig. 2, when it is desired to cut paper or other stock of comparatively small area, it is only necessary to raise the knife I) a small distance, as shown in this figure. The apparatus is regulated by adjusting the spring h to the desired degree to raise the knife I), as shown in Fig. 2. The stock may then be out and after each cutting operation the knife is automatically turned to its original position by the spring, as described. When it is desired to cut stock of a larger size, the spring 72 is regulated by the nuts 9 and f to raise the knife 6 to the required extent and then the operation is the same, for the spring will raise the knife to its original position after that position has been determined by the adjustment of the devices mentioned.
A cutter which, broadly, will operate the same as the one herein described is set forth and claimed in my copending application for Letters Patent of the United States filed Feb. 3, 1912, under Serial No. 67 5,303. The specific construction herein disclosed however has certain advantages in some lines of work over that described in my co-pending application.
What I claim, is

In combination with the bed-plate of a paper-cutter, a bearing rigid with said bedplate, a shaft revoluble in said bearing and having a screw-threaded portion, and a reduced end adjacent thereto, said end lying on the shear side of the knife, a spiral spring having one end secured to the bearing and the other to a nut on said screw-threaded to the bearing and a nut on said threadportion, a jam-nut for said nut, and a knife ed portion, and tension-adjusting means for 3.)
