dated December 9, 189,0, and While not intending to'limit my improvement to that particular machinesince it may be used to advantage with other constructions -of machines in the same class, I have selected the machine of the aforesaid patent for illustrating my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a broken view in longitudinal vertical section of the entire device; Fig. 2, plan view of the forward operatingend portion of the device to which my improvement is applied, and Fig. 3 av perspective View showing in unassembled relation the parts constituting my improvement.
The object ofmy invention is to provide a novel construction of bearing-bracket which shall render it peculiarly simple'and effective in producing desirable uniform bearing against the surface of the comb of the cutterbar, Which vibrates across it to perform the cutting operation, notwithstanding any irregularity in the said surface or in the under or upper surface of the cutter-bar.
rllhe fact is recognized in the art to which my invention relates that for practicability in the operation of the shears the cutter-bar should have at least three bearing-points on .the comb-surface, or, in other words, that at least threecutting-teeth are required in the set thereof with which the bar' is formed. This surface of the comb and the under surface of the cutter-bar are frequently irregular, inclining from a perfectly level plane,
with' the effect of presenting the bearingpoints of the bracket for pressing the teeth against the comb on different planes, andl thereby rendering the pressurenon-uniform', while it should be uniform to preventv binding of thecutter in operation and other imperfect action. To avoid these difiiculties,it is com- `mon to provide a bracket engaging the cutter-bar at different points thereon to tighten it against the comb-surface, with one of the bearing-points of the bracket adjustable independently of the others; Aand my invention rel'ates,'primarily,' to -a novel construction of the bracket for rendering such bearing-points thereof independently adjustable.
In the drawings, A is the casing, containing "the operating' mechanism andl provided With a removable cover A3, a bearing for the front I end' of the rotatory operating-shaft B, and a handle A', extending from the bearing, the
\ rear endof which is cylindrical and internally screw-threaded to 'receive a bushing C2, forming the bearing for the rear-end of the shaft. Loosely mounted on the handle is a sleeve C', containing a circumferential ribv c', Afitting against' the handle and the rear. end of the bushing, having a flange czto bear against therear face of a rib (not shown) on the .sleeve C to hold it/against endwise motion.

The parts thus far described, except the vibratory lever, are the same as the correspond- 'ing parts of the structure set forth in the aforesaid Letters Patent and are herein identiiied by the same reference characters as those in the patent.

Means for adjusting the degree of pressure exerted by the cutter-bar on the comb are shown to be provided, being the same as in the aforesaid patent and described as follows: A hard-steel step E7 is'detachably seated in the lever E in advance of the bearing E2.
An adjustingplug A2 works in a screwthreaded opemng 1n the cover A3 and is provided with a head A4 and with a socket a2, being held against rotation by the toothed end of a spring A5, supported on the cover to engage said head. The under face of the plug A2 be'ars against the head of a hard-steel pin I of cone shape, the upper face of which is a segment of a sphere and the lower end of which works in the step E7 on the lever E;
The construction of the bracket G renders it flexible, and by pivotally supporting the sectionscforming it on the lever E they are rendered independently adjustable to automatically adapt themselves a ainst the parts of the cutter-bar on which t iey bear. The bracket thus'serves under the action of the plug A2 and pin I against thelever E' to tighten the cutter-bar against the comb,*and
if the upper and lower surfaces of the bar and the coperating surface of the comb are level the bearing-points ofthe bracket G will be depressed uniformly and simultaneously by tightening the plug A2; but ,if one or more of the said surfaces should be irregular the bracket-sections by-rocking on their supporting-studs will adjust themselves against the cutter-bar in a manner to compensate for such irregularities and tighten the bearingpoints of the bracket uni ormly against the bar to conform the under surface of the latter i the cooperating surface of the comb and eHect even action ofthe cutter-bar throughout its vibratory movement against the. comb-surfa e.
What I claim as new, yand desire to secure by Letters Patent, ise- 1.,' In animal-shears, the combination with the comb and the vibratory cutter-bar cooperating therewith, of a bearing-bracket engaging said bar to tighten' it against the comb-surface, said bracket being formed of -sections flexibly joined together near adja cent ends, for the purpose set forth.
2. In animal-shears the combination with the comb andthe vibratory cuttenbar cooperatingy therewith, of a bearing-bracket engaging said bar to., tighten it. against the comb-surface, said bracket being formed of a` section having a reeessin oneven'd and a section having a tongue entering said recess and Aat which the sections are iiexibly joined together, for the purpose set forth.
3. In animalf'shears, the combination with the combfthe vibratory cutter-bar coperating therewith, and the vibratory operatinglever, of studs projecting from the forward end of said lever, a bearing-bracket formed of flexibly-joined sections each journaled on one of said studs, and means for adjusting said lever to engage said bracket with the cutter-bar for tightening said bar against the comb-surfacefor the purpose set forth.v

In animal-shears, the combination with the comb, the vibratory cutter-bar coperating therewith, and the vibratory operatinglever, of studs projecting from the forward end of said lever, a bearing-bracket formed of a section having a recess in oneend and a section havinga tongue entering said recess and at which lthe sections are flexibly joined together, each of said sections being journaled on one of said studs, andmeans for adjusting said lever to engage said bracket with the cutter-bar for tightening said bar against the comb-surface, for the purpose set forth.
5. In animal-shears, the combination with the comb, the vibratory cutter-bar coperating therewith, and the vibratory operatinglever, of studs projecting from the forward' end of said lever, one of said studs having a recess, a bearing-bracket formed of a section tions and engaging said stud-recess, andmeans for adjusting said lever to engage said bracket with the cutter-bar for tightening said bar against the comb-surface, for the purpose set forth.
