To all whom it mag/concern Be it known that I, EmlL vvniranma citizen of the United States, resi'dingat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Clamping Device for Type, of which the followingis .a specification.
This invention has reference to clamping devices for type, and its object is to provide a device to take the place of ordinary tieups.
In accordance with the present invention each device comprises two side bars and two end bars, which latter constitute clamps, the device inclosing the type and clamping them firmly in thesame manner and with better effect than is customarily accomplished by tying the makeup together with a string.
The device admits of better proofs, quicker handling, and considerable time saved for general make-up. Each page of make-up is provided with a plate on which it rests. Since the usual custom of tying up and untying the pages of the make-up takes considerable time, the present invention facilitates the making of alterations and the run over of lines. Better alinement of lines is obtained, and the pages incased by the device are ready for the imposing stone or lay out on the stone. All the stoneman has to do is to take out the clamps and side bars and lock up the form. Moreover, the inclosingdevice and plates permit the gaining of considerable space for storing pages.
The invention will be. best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the further understanding that while the drawings show a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure l is a plan view of a make-up in which the present invention is utilized. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp frame. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 1. of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, there are shown two side bars 1 and 2 which may be alike. There are also shown two clamp bars 8 and 4 which may also be alike. Each side "bar is formed near one end with a notch or recess '5 extending Into one edge of the bar perpendicular to the length of the latter for about half the width of the bar, although any particular distance is not obligatory. The other end of the bar has a series of notches 6 similar to the notch 5, and these notches are spaced from the first-named notch and are also spaced apart to accommodate octavo, quarto and larger pages. The end bars, which may be termed clamp bars, each have near one end a notch? entering one edge perpendicular to the length of the bar and designed to match the notch 5, so that each clamp bar may be joined to a respective side bar which in the particular instance shown is the bar 2, so that the clamp bar extends perpendicular to the side bar with the upper edges of the side bars and clamp bars in one plane.
The other end of each end or clamp bar 8 and a has a series of notches 8 generally similar to the notch 7 and designed in the case of the end or clamp bar 3 to engage the notch 5 of the bar 1, and in the case of the bar a to engage in one of the notches 6 of the bar 1; that is, a notch 8 will embrace a bar 1 on opposite faces thereof, with the notch 5 or 6, as the case may be, embracing the bar 3 or 4c, as the case may be. There is thereby formed a rectangular frame variable in width because of the presence of the notches 8 and variable in length because of the presence of the notches 6. Each notch 7 on the side thereof toward the adjacent end of the bar 3 or l is slightly curved or beveled outwardly, as indicated at 9, and each notch 8 has the edge toward the opposite end of the bar 3 or 4 curved or bew eled outwardly, as indicated at 10. Each of the bars 3 and 4* at its outer end is provided with other notches 11, which, when the parts are assembled, are exterior to the frame thus formed and provide convenient means for the handling of the bars 3 and 4.
Vith the bars 1, 2, 3 and l there may be formed a rectangular frame of somewhat less than type height and of an interior area to inclose and clamp a standard size body of type representing a certain standard page. The notches 7 and 8 are so arranged as to provide for different widths of page and the notches 5 and 6 are so arranged as to pro vide for difierent lengths. of page. When the frame thus formed is about a body of type the interior dimensions of the frame are such as to snugly hold the type, the curved sides 9 and 10 of the notches 7 and 8, respectively, acting to draw the bars 1 and 2 toward each other into tightly clamping relation to the type inclosed' by the frame. Then the type is tightly bound in place to better advantage than is the case where the type are tied together with apiece of cord.
For each page of type there is provided a plate 12 with an upstanding flange 13 at one edge and an upstanding flange 14 at one end, while the edges of the plate not provided with flanges are beveled, as shown at 15 and 16, respectively, although it will be understood that but one of the edges need be beveled. The plate 12 provides for the type when not on the stone, but the body of type is readily slid ofl of the plate because of the presence of the beveled edge or edges. In the drawings the type are conventionally indicated at 17.
The side bars are smooth or plane on both the inside and outside faces, so that they can be used both ways. The notch'5 of each side bar is located at that end which is cus tomarily the top end of the clamp, that is,
the end toward the top of the page of type. The notches 11 permit ready opening of the whole lock for correction or run over of lines, while the remaining notches provide for variations in size of pages. The curvature 9 and 10 is of particular importance because serving to bind the side bars tightly against the type inclosed in the frame or look.
One set of side bars and end or clamp bars will provide for various size pages, so that a printer has only to obtain a sufiicient number of these bars to accommodate all the pages he will need to have locked up in them and the bars may all be of the same size, since they provide for differences in page size.
WVith the invention the time heretofore lost in tying up the pages with cord is avoided, better proofs are obtained than before, there are no ofi' their feet complaints,
