COMBINED :PACKAGE-PROTECTOR AND STRAP-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
Application filed September 23, 1916. Serial No. 121,721.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD E. DAv'Is, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of TvVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Package-Protectors and Strap-Holders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for protecting the edges of packages from possible damage by securing straps or cords thereon, and for preventing displacement of such straps or cords of the package.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device whereby the cords or straps of a package may be held against possible displacement without the necessity of ixedlyv attaching the holding device to the package, and a further object, which is compassed in the accomplishment of the foregoing object, is the provision of means affording a maximum degree of protection for the edges of the package against damage by the cords or straps.
It is a still further object to provide a combined package protecting and cord holding device which is of exceedingly simple structure whereby it may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
INith the above and other advantages in view the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, arrangement, and formation of parts more particularly hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, the igure shows a package having my improved protecting and holding device associated with the straps thereof one of said devices being shown partially broken away. j
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a package of any desired form comprising in the present instance a stack of objects such as books, and disposed about the package are a pair of spaced straps 6, the ends of which are secured together in any desired form (not shown.) Associated with the straps at the top of the package is a handle member 7 having laterally turned ends terminating in strap receiving loops 8.
The improved package protector and strap holding means comprises a plurality of members disposed at the strap engaging edges of the packages, and each of these members comprises an angular plate 9 having at each end a pair of outwardly turned transverse flanges l() defining an angular channel for receiving corresponding strap sections. The strap sections are held against displacement from these channels by bars 1l extending between the flanges at their angle portions. The plates thus hold the straps against lateral movement on the package which might procure possible displacement of the straps and at the same time the plates prevent injury of the edge portions of the package by the straps.
I am aware that heretofore it has been contemplated to provide protecting means for packages comprising angular plates interposed between the straps and the edges of the package, but such plates were each associated with only a single strap and hence would not hold the straps against lateral displacement. Also such plates would not afford the degree of protection to the package aorded by the present plates inasmuch as in the present plates the intermediate portions thereof take up the strain of the straps whereby the strain is distributed along the entire edge portions of the package, this arrangement being particularly valuable `in connection with books or Vsimilar objects which would be marred by the engagement therewith of plate members but little wider than the strap.
I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a combined package protector and strap holder comprising an elongated angular plate, pairs of outturned transverse flanges at its end portions defining angular strap receiving channels and retaining bolts connecting the angular outer portions of the flanges.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State vof I/Visconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD E. DAVIS.
