JAMES H. HULL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application filed October 15, 1915. Seri'a1.No.55,985.
To all whomc't may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMEs HULL, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a specificatiom'such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to cigar or cigarette holders, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which will firmly grasp and hold a cigar or cigarette and permit the discharge of a cigar butt or cigarette butt from the holder.
The invention is fully disclosed inthe following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in whichthe separate parts of my improvements are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in'which:
Figure l is a side view of my improved holder with a cigar held therein; Fig. 2 a sectional side view of the holder as shown in Fig. l and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the parts in a. different position; and Fig. 4 a transverse section on the line M of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown at 1 the usual mouthpiece employed in connection with devices of this class, said mouthpiece being provided with a reduced externally threaded portion 2 onto which is threaded a tubular sleeve 3, the outer end portion of which is tapered outwardly as shown at I, and said end portion is cut out at its opposite sides as shown at 5 to form projecting spring jaw members 6 on the inner faces of which are formed knobs or projections 7. Formed in connection with the spring jaw members 6 are extensions which are folded at 8 to form backwardly directed plate spring members 9 at the irmer edge portions of which are riveted headed pins 10. i
The tubular sleeve 3 is provided, preferably, centrally thereof with an external projecting bead 11 and slidably mounted on said sleeve is a supplemental movable sleeve 12 provided at its rear end portion with an external bead or projection 13 which corresponds with the bead or projection 11, and is adapted to operate in connection therewith, said supplemental sleeve being tapered at its outer end to correspond with the taper 4 onthe sleeve 3, and the tapered portion of "said supplemental sleeve is provided at its opposite sides with longitudinal raised portions 14; in which are formed longitudinal slots 15 in which the headed pins 10 are adapted to operate. The beads or projectlons 11 on the sleeve 3 and the beads or projections 13 on the sleeve 12 when in the position shown inFig. 2 serve as means for holding the supplemental movable sleeve in its operative position, or the position by which a cigar 16 may be grasped and held in the holder, said cigar being shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and'indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3.
In the position of the parts, as shown in Fig. 3, the spring jaw members 6 are extended outwardly by the supplemental movable sleeve 12, "and the plate spring members in which position of the parts a cigar may be inserted into the holder, as indicated in dotted lines, and by moving said sleeve 12 forwardly the front edge portion thereof will operate in connection with the spring jaw members 6 to force said jaw members inwardly and compress the corresponding sides of the cigar to grasp and hold the same, and the knobs or projections 7 on the inner faces of said spring jaw members will aid in this operation, and when the supplemental sleeve 12 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, it will be noted that said sleeve will be held against movement by means of the beads or projections 11 and 13 unless sufiicient force is applied to move said supplemental sleeve backwardly in order to discharge a cigar butt, and in this last operation the spring members 9 are drawn backwardly to a slight extent to force the spring jaw members 6 outwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
It will be understood, of course, that either cigars or cigarettes may be used in connection with my improved holder, all that is necessary being that the dimension of said holders be made suitable for the use for which they are intended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cigar or cigarette holder'comprising a mouthpiece, a sleeve detachably connected therewith, said sleevebeing provided at its outer end with spring jaw members, a supplemental movable sleeve mounted on said 3 first named sleeve, and means integral with the spring jaw members extending backwardly and connected with the supplemental sleeve whereby the movement of said supplemental sleeve will open and close said jaw members.
2. A cigar or cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece, a sleeve detachably connected therewith, said sleeve being provided at its outer end with spring jaw members, a suppleinental movable sleeve mounted on said first named sleeve, means connected with the spring jaw members extending backwardly and connected with the supplemental sleeve whereby the movement of said supplemental sleeve will open and close said jaw members, and means for locking the supplemental sleeve in one position.
3. A cigar or cigarette holder, comprising a mouthpiece, a sleeve detachably connected therewith and provided at its outer end with spring aw members having backwardly directed plate spring members the ends of which are provided with headed pins, and a supplemental movable sleeve mounted on said first named sleeve and provided with raised portions having longitudinal slots in which said headed pins operate whereby the movement of said supplemental sleeve will open and close said jaw members.
4. A cigar or cigarette holder, comprising amouthpiece, a' sleeve detachably connected therewith and provided at its outer end with spring jaw members having backwardly directed plate spring members the ends of which are provided with headed pins, and a supplemental movable sleeve mounted on said first named sleeve and provided with raised portions having longitudinal slots in which said headed pins operate whereby the movement of said supplemental sleeve will open and close said jaw members, said jaw members being provided on their inner face with knobs or projections. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 12th day of October, 1915.
