CIGAR-HOLDER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14:, 1916.
Application filed March 21, 1916. Serial No. 85,699.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Jonnson, a subject of the King of Sweden residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders which may be easily and quickly transformed from one adapted to hold a cigar to one adapted to hold a cigarette and vice versa and it con sists in the novel features hereinafter-doscribed and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character indicated which may be quickly transformed for the purposes stated and with this object in view the structure includes a body portion having a bit section, an intermediate section and an end socket section. Jaws are pivotally mounted upon the intermediate section and provided for moving the said jaws to hold their gripping ends in contact with the cigar or cigarette as the case may be. The end portions of the jaws extend transversely across the end of the socket and when the jaws are moved to engage the cigar or cigarette they are held in proper position by the said moving means. The moving means may also be manipulated to spread the gripping ends of the jaws whereby the cigar or cigarette is released.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder. Fig. 2 is a similar view at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. a is a side elevation of the modified form of the same.
The holder is in the form of a body which includes a bit section 1, an intermediate section 2 and a socket section 3.' The sections join integrally one with the other and a passage way leads longitudinally through the same. The socket section 3 is provided with an internal socket the side walls of which taper and the said socket may be of any suit able diameter. The socket provided in the socket 3 is adapted to receive the end of a cigar or cigarette as the case may be.
Jaws 4 are pivotally mounted upon the intermediate section 2 and the said jaws are provided in the vicinity of the point of juncture of the intermediate section 2 and the socket section 3 with outstanding shoulders 5. The said jaws l are further provided at their inner ends with shanks 6 the exmeans is' tremities of which are disposed toward the periphery of the intermediate section 2. The jaws a are provided at their forward ends with gripping portions 7 which extend transversely across the end of the socket provided in the socket section 3. In order that the device may be made as small as possible and constructed from wood a ferrule S is applied to the end of the socket section 3. The said ferrule is of metal and consequently prevents the bodyv from splitting when a cigar or cigarette is inserted forcibly in the same. A ring 9 is movably mounted upon the intermediate section 2 and may engage the shoulders 5 of the jaws a when moved in one direction and when moved in an opposite direction engage the shanks 6 of the said jaws 4. hen the ring 9 is moved into engagement with the shoulders 5 the jaws 4 are swung whereby the gripping portions 7 are moved toward each other across the end of the socket section 3 and thus the portions 7 may be brought into contact with the opposite sides of a cigar or cigarette and the same will be securely held in the socket of the section 3. hen the ring 9 is moved into engagement with the shank 6 of the jaws 4. the gripping portions 7 of the said jaws are swung away from each other whereby the cigar or cigarette which has been previously clamped between them is released and the said cigar or cigarette may then be readily removed from the socket section 3. In one form of the invention the ring 9 is slidably mounted upon the intermediate section 2 and frictionally engages the same to such an eX- tent as to remain at the position to which it is adjusted upon the said section 2. In the form of the invention as shown in Fig. 4 the ring 9 is screwthreaded upon the section 2 and is moved longitudinally of the said section by being turned. In both forms of the invention the operation of the ring 9 when it engages the'shoulders 5 and the shank 6 of the aws 4 is the same. c
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a holder of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be easily and quickly transformed from one adapted to hold a cigar to one adapted to hold a cigarette and vice versa. Also the device is susceptible of manipulation to quickly release a partially consumed cigar or cigarette by swinging the gripping ends of the jaws away from each other.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A smokers article comprising a body having a bit section, an intermediate section and a socket section jaws pivotally mounted upon the intermediate section and having gripping portions extending transversely across the socket section, said jaws being provided with spaced outstanding shoulders and outstanding shanks and a ring mounted upon the intermediate portion and movable thereon to engage the shoulders or the shanks.
2. A smokers article comprising a bod) having a bit section,
an intermediate section Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
and a socket section, jaws pivotally mounted upon the intermediate section and having gripping portions disposed transversely across the socket section, said jaws being provided with spaced shoulders and shanks and a ring screwthreaded upon the intermediate portion and engageable with the shoulders and shanks of the jaws to swing the same.
In testimony whereof I, aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
