MAGAZINE-HANDLE.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug.14,1914.
Application filed June 16, 1913. Serial No. 773,819.
This invention relates to an improvement in combined tools and especially to combining together a carpenters 1hammer and a nail-set intended for usetherewith, and the inventionconsists in the novel devices and combinations of parts and devices hereinafter more fully set forth and made the subject matter of claim.
In the accompanying drawing. which formsa part of this specification, Figure :1 is a side view of a hammer and nail-set combined in the mannerof my invention Fig. 2,on a largerscale,-is a section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig.4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig; 2; Fig.5 is a side view of the tilting nail-set sheath or carrier.
The prime object of the present improvement is to combine with the handle of the hammer a spring-held tilting sheath, socket or carrier .to receive the nail-set in such a fashion and manner that thetilting sheath or carrier may be manipulated with one finger of the hand carrying the hammer to throw the sheath out into a position where the nail-set can .be readily seized and removed by the fingers of the' other hand when it is desired to usethe nail-set in conjunction with the hammer, andto as readily replace the same into the sockets In the said drawings A represents the hammer.
B is the usual wooden hammer handle which is mortiscd or cut to receive the tilting nail-set sheath now to be described. This mortise or cavity G is placed in the side of the hammer handle. And if the hammer is to be used by a right-handed person the cavity is cut in the left-hand side of said handle as illustrated in the drawing. In this cavity is fitted the frame D which maybe secured to the handle by the two small screws (Z. Mounted in this frame is the tilting nail-set carrier E pivoted on the pivot 6. Within the cavity is the spring F which may be secured to the stud f on the carrier and which bears against one endof the tilting sheath E tendingto holdthe said tilting sheath in the closed or retracted position. To swing the i sheath open a finger of the operators right hand, say the second or third finger,
which lies immediately over the part or finger-hold G of the tiltin sheath,.is pressed I inward, throwing the s ort end of the tilting sheath in against the spring and the longend of said sheath out, as indicated in dotted lines at Fig. 2,. thus opening the sheath and bringing the nail-set H into position so that the end of the same may be seiaed by the fingers of the other hand, after which the PIOSSUIC of the finger on the tilt ing sheath being released said sheath flies back and the hammer is in perfect condition tobe used with the set. To replace the set the tilting sheath is again ressed out, the setinserted in the sheath and mittcd to spring back into closed position.
The whole arrangement is such that the.
nail-set when not in use is carried safely and without any inconvenience in the hammer. handle and also such that when required, the
80 necessary to compress a finger of that hand 1 hammer being in the right hand 1t is only and brin the othcrhand into position to receive the nail-set for use or return it to place after use. A little practice enables this to be done bythe workman without looking and a great convenience in manipulation is thus secured along with the fact that the nail-set is always present with the handle whenrequired. It will also be noted that the whole sheath device may be set in and secured to the handle grip by merely recessing the "rip and putting in the screws that hold the device in place therein; and
the device is then flush with the handlesurface.
My invention is hereinabove set forth as embodied in a particular and preferable form of construction, but may also beembodied in other forms of construction within the claims hereinafter made.
I claim:
1. The combination with ,a tool handle grip, of a tilting, spring-held nail-set sheath adapted to receive a nail-set mounted on said grip and adapted to be operated bythe fingers of the users hand when the latter is in its normal position while holding the grip, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a hammer handle, of a nail-set sheath pivoted intermediate its ends in the side of the hammer handle and having oneof its ends held in and. the
the sheath peri substantially as specified. 4:. .The combination v-Wlth a tool handlegrip, vof a tool-sheath for a supplementary tool, the sheath being rockably mounted on other held out by means of a spring, the
grip, of a movable, disappearingtool-sheath;
having, a tension: device to'retain it in'nor mal position, and adaptedto receive a supv hand in the presence of two subscribing plementary tool, the outer surface of said tool sheath lying flush iththe surface of the handle-grip when in I normal position i a pivot located intermediate its ends and disappearing in the side ."of the grip and having one end held in and the otherheld out by means of a tension device, the held cut end being opposite the fingers of a hand holding the grip.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set Witnesses.
