Specification Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed January 17, 1918. i Serial No. 212,276.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it'known that I, DENIS OCALLAGHAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 111 Churchill avenue, Subiaco, Western Australia, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pour-Out Devices for Petrol and like Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides an effective and wasteless device for pouring out or decantprincipally for use in filling the tanks of motor cars direct from the petrol can. It is obvious that the device is applicable for all uses where it is desired to decant liquids from the bulk in a convenient and wasteless manner.
The device is adapted to be quickly and tightly squeezed or sprung home in a self gripping manner on the can and also to be easily detachable therefrom. The construction and use of the invention will be explained with the aid of the annexed drawing which shows the device in position for use on the petrol can from which the petrol is desired to be poured direct into the tank of the motor car.
The drawing represents a side elevation-of a can and aportion of a tank broken away in parts and showing the improved device applied thereto. The device comprises. a discharge pipe a made with a spearheaded inlet mouth I) adapted to pierce or penetrate and preferably at a bottom corner of the can as shown. This discharge motor car and theexit mouth as to convey the ct "Fl P i? pipe a is provided with a turn ofi tap d and is suitably bent in order to adapt the same for entrance into the petrol tank e of the f of said pipe is provided with a removable wire gauze strainer g. If desired, a flexiblerubber pipe may be attached to the end of the pipe aso to the carbureter in the event of the becoming injured or leaky.
The pipe a is "suitably held in position on the rectangular inturnedend j of the holder or yoke j whose'h'e'ad end is inturned at an obtuse angle, as at k; said inturned end is tan being serrated on its undersidelc in order to eflect a better grip on the top rim or edge 0 'of the can 0 when being sprung thereon.
Surrounding the inlet mouth I) of the pipe at I employ a sealing rubber or leather washer m and a loose metal protector washer r thereunder a ainst which the adjusting screw nut or s eeve p operates when it is de- "sired to force the sealing washer m tight inverted position. and the pipe a by'its spear head I) caused to pierce or penetrate the can and the holder is brought into position and by its serrated head lc-lc sprung and tightly locked to the top of thecan as in the position shown in the drawing, and the washer m is then caused to form a tight seal against the escape of any'liquid from the can 0 by forcing the adjusting nut 19 thereagainst, the said nut providing additional sealing means and may be screwed up as tight as desired or necessary against the loose washer 'ron the underside of the sealing washer. The can 0 and the device is now reversed and brought to the position shown in the drawing and the liquid decanted through pipea and tap 03 into the tank 6-.
What-I claim as my invention and desire to secure by LettersPatent is A pour-out or decanting device of the character described, comprising a holder or yoke provided with an upper inturned serrated head adapted to be sprung over the top of a can to secure the holder or yoke in applied" position, said holder having alower angular terminal with an opening therethrough, a discharge pipe extending through the opening of the lower yoke terminal and formed with an upper reduced penetrating head for piercing a can bottom, a rubber seal washer on thepipe to engage the can bottom, a loose metal washer on the pipe to enmy hand'in presence of two subscribing wit-v gage said 56?]. wasiller, an adjusfiin-g n(111t on nesses. a the pipe to 0 amp t e metal was er ah seal Washer, and securing nuts on the pipe to DENIS O OALLAGHAN' 5 engage the lower angular terminal, the pipe Witnesses:
.being bent and having a cut-ofl' valve. U. W. BURKE,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set RICHARD SPARROW.
