Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
Application filed May 17,1918. serial 1701235459.
To all whom it may concern Be'it known that I, FnANoIs MAKowsKr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented tcertain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hatpins and the object of my improvement is to produce a hatpin structure composed of a hatpin proper and a guard wherein the said hatpin proper is provided with means for engaging with one side of the hat whereby the same will be positively retained in position and wherein the point of the hatpin proper is covered by the said guard so as to prevent the liability of damage from havlng the point exposed, and also provided with means for retaining the guard positively in position for so protecting the point.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hatpin, comprising the complete structure, with the guard, the side walls of a hat with which the same is engaged being indicated by broken lines.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the guard and part of the hatpin proper.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the pointed end portion of the hatpin proper.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the guard.
Fig. 7 is a sectional View on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 3.
My improved hatpin comprises a hatpin proper 10 having a wire body 11 for penetrating the sides 12 of the hat and a guard 13 for being mounted on the pointed end por tion of the body 11.
The hatpin proper 10 and the guard 13 are provided on their outer ends with a head 141 of ornamental form that serves as a handle.
The body 11 has on the portion adjacent the head 14 that engages with the side 12 of the hat a set of convolutions 15 forming a coil of helical form, somewhat of the form of a cork-screw, which, by turning the hatpin proper, can be screwed into the side wall of the hat so as to bring some of the c-onvolutions on the inner side of the hat.
This provides a positive hold of the hatpin with the wall of the hat.
In order to provide for a positive hold of the guard 13 with the hatpin proper the pointed end portion of the hatpin proper is made of special form, as follows :The said pointed end portion 16 is provided with an off-set in the form of a shoulder 17 at an appreciable distance inward from the point 18- that is formed by bending to one side the material of the body 11.
The guard body 19 is adapted to slip over the said pointed end portion 16 and engage with the shoulder 17 in the following manner:The said guard body 19 is an elongated structure, and has a bored hole 20 entering inwardly from the inner end that is a close fit for the body 11 and in length is slightly longer than the pointed end portion 16, and also is cut away on two sides for the greater part of the middle portion so as to open up the bore 20, leaving a closed, or unslotted, portion at the butt or inner end 21, and a second closed or unslotted portion 22 adjacent the outer end.
A reduced shank 23 extends outwardly from the outer closed portion 22 and supports the head 14: by its outer end.
As described, the middle portion 24 is virtually slotted, the closed portion 22 at the outer end has a bore for receiving the point 18 and the adjacent part of the body 11, and the closed portion 21 at the butt end has a shoulder 25 at the end of the slot 26 on each side or on opposite sides of thebore 20. The shoulder 25 serves as a stop in cooperation with the off-set shoulder 17 on the body 11 of the hatpin proper.
The butt end 21 has a counterbore 27 at the end of the bore 20 to facilitate the entrance of the hatpin proper into the bore 20 of the guard 13.
In bringing the device into use the pointed end portion 16 is first entered within the outer end of the bore 20, at the butt end 21, and is then pushed gradually inwardly along the said bore 20, the bent or off-set portion being momentarily sprung inwardly to sub stantially the original straight position through contact with the walls of the closed portions of the bore until brought into reg istration with the inner slotted portion 24 of the guard 13 when the spring of the material operates to spring outwardly the said bent or off-setportion so that the shoulders 17 and 25 engage and cooperate to hold the guard 13 in position on the end of the hatpin proper.
I claim as my invention A hatpin structure comprising a hatpin proper and a guard for being slipped over the end thereof, the said guard having an elongated body provided With end portions that have each a bore fitting the body of the 10 said hatpin proper and'a slotted portion conneoting the said end portions, and the said body of the hatpin proper being formed of Wire fitting into the bore of the said end portions and having an offset portion adjacent the pointed end for entering into one of the slots of the said slotted portion and e11- gaging with the end Wall of one of the said slots.
