To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDITH BREUNIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Safety Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention is an improvement in fasteners and has particular reference to a guard for safety pins.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved guard for the pin point which will guide the same to its closing or looking position and which will also prevent its accidental displacement owing to any outward pressure exerted thereon by the clothing to. which it is fastened.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.

The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving'a variety of mechanical expressions, some of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, are shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the safety pin constructed in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the pin point in locked position.

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position of the point when about to enter between the jaws of the guard.

Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing a slightly modified form of guard.

Referring to the drawing and more particularly to Fig. 1 the numeral 5 indicates generally a safety pin of ordinary construction consisting of the usual bar member 6 and the pin member 7 with the intermediate coi 8.

The guard which comprises the essential feature of this invention is preferably formed from a single sheet of resilient mathe form of a tube for receiving the end of the bar member 6 whereby the guard is held in operative position. The free end of the guard is widened to provide oppositely disposed spring jaws generally indicated by r the numeral 10 and having theirintermediate portion bent into circular formation as indicated at 11 to provide a recess for receiving the point of the pin member 7 when the same is in closing position. The major portions of the jaws 10 have their inner surfaces normally contacting so as to form a closure for the recess in which the pin point is engaged whereby any tendency of said point to become accidentally detached from the guard will be against the tension of said jaws and suflicient pressure will have to be exerted upon the pin member to spread said jaws apart before said point can be released. It is well known that the pin points often become detached from the guard owing to the outward pressure upon the central portion of the pin member 7 which has a tendency to bend the pin point inwardly toward the bar member of the pin and it will be apparent in the present invention such tendency of the point will be prevented owing to the resiliency of the jaws 10 and the fact that the jaws 10 have their inner faces in engagement with each other.

The outer or free longitudinal edges of the jaws 10 are preferably turned outwardly or flared as indicated at 12 to provide lips adapted to guide the pin point into the guard between the jaws thereof. In Fig. 4 the lips 12 are curved inwardly instead of outwardly as in Figs. 2 and 3 to provide a substantially semicircular pocket into which the pin point is inserted before being forced between the jaws 10.
