Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application led May 14, 1912. Serial No. 697,217.
To all 107mm 'it may conce/"n Be it known that I, Roonnioii D. Comc- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful improvements in Hat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a protector for the point of hat pins, said protector beinkg` constructed in a simple manner to form a guard for the point of the pin after the latter has been inserted thereinto, whereby the danger of injuring a person is obviated.
ln carrying` out the objects of the invention, generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred "and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a plan View of the protector showing; a hat pin applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig'. 3 is a section on the line SH3 of Fig. l.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying,- drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comj'n'ises a singie strip of metal consisting of an elongated body having' one end t5 thereof bent to form approximately an angle of o thereto, said bent end being provided with an aperture 7 for the reception of a hat pin.
The body 5 is bent upon itself adjacent its other end to provide a substantially U- shaped guard portion 8 against which the point of the pin 9 is adapted to abut when said pin is inserted into the protector. The free extremity of the guard portion 8 is bent inwardly at substantially right ang-les to the body 5 to form an extension 10 which is provided with a laterally extending' slot 11. One portion of the extension 10 is adapted to engage the body 5 while the portion on the opposite side of the slot lilA is reduced and rounded as indicated at 1Q to provide a guiding; edge which is adapted to guide the pin l) into the said slot l1 whereby said pin will be prevented from moving late `ally in the protector and bind in the opening` 7. The portions 5. 6 and 10 are preferably of reduced thickness as compared with the portions 13 and 141; whereby the resiliency of the parts is insured while substantially reinforcing those portions in which independent movement is not required.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that the invention contemplates providingr a hat pin protector which is simple in construction thus rcducing the cost of imlnufacture of the same to a minimum and which is durable and effective in carrying' out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is A hat pin protector constructed of a single length of spring;` materi al formed at one end in return bend and having the free terminal. of such return bend portion projected toward and into contact with the main length of the strip to form a housing, said laterally projected portion being); formed with a slot extending;` at right angles to the main length of the si rip and communicating in a channel opening;l through one edge of the laterally projected portion with its upper wall incliuing;l upwardly and outwardly from its juncture with the slot, the main length of the strip at a point in advance of the housing beinereduced in thickness to provide a resilient section the free terminal of said section being' bent upwardly at an angle of approximately llo@ to the main `length of the strip and formed with an aperture approximately in alincment longitudinally of the strip with the slot in the laterally projected portion.
ln testimony whereof l aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
