Description

PLOW.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-24, I91]- 1 6,93; Patented June 11, 1918.
OLOF SWANSON, 0F KINDERSLEY, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
PLOW.
Application filed September 24, 1917. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF SWANSON, of Kindersley, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification. y
My object is to devise a plow especially adapted for use in breaking heavy land and in stubble plowing. I attainmy object by employing instead of a single side mold board with its share a plurality of narrow mold boards each with its own share and landside and each connected to a separate beam, the beams being suitably braced and connected.
In detail the plow is constructed substantially as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 a side elevation of a single landside with its flanges;
Fig. 4: a plan view of three land sides, mold boards, sole plates and shares in proper relationship for the turning of a furrow.
Fig. 5 a plan View of a landside, moldboard, sole plate and share as designed for shallow plowing; and
Fig. 6 a cross section through a landside, sole plate and moldboard showing particularly the wedge for adjusting the position of the mold board.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is the main plow beam, which is of ordinary construction, provided with a plurality of auxiliary beams at its rearward end. The rear ends 3 of these branches are curved downwardly in echelon formation as shown. Each of the auxiliary beams has an offset lug 4 formed at its forward end adapted to be bolted either to the main beam or to the intermediate auxiliary beam as the case may be. It will be noted that a plurality of bolt holes 5 are formed so that the relative positions of the branches longitudinally of the plow may be varied according as the plow is to be used in breaking or in stubble plowing.
Braces 6 are provided for the rearward ends of the branches, which braces are bolted in place, a plurality of bolt holes 7 being formed in the main plow beam and inter- Specification of Letters Patent.

mediate auxiliary beam so that the braces may be accommodated to the longitudinal ad ustment aforesai To the lower end of each plow beam is secured a plate 8 forming a landside. Each 8 has a sole plate flange 9 and a moldboard flange 10 formed thereon. The sole plate 11 and th e plow share 12 will be formed integral with one another and are bolted to the flanges 9 and 10 as shown. The' sole plate is narrow, as is also the share, the forward edge of the latter being preferably at right angles to the plow beam.
To each moldboard flange is secured a narrow upwardly and rearwardly directed slat 13 forming an independent mold board. These moldboard slats, however, are twisted and curved in the direction of their length and are differently shaped so that they act in turning a furrow as parts of a single moldboard.
The spacing between the separate sole plates and land sides, as appearsfrom the plan view of Fig. 4 increases slightly from front to rear, that is, the land sides are not parallel, which materially assists the plow in cleaning itself and prevents clogging.
It will be appreciated from the drawings and description that while each of the plow beams is completely equipped with landside, sole plate, share and mold board, yet these parts all cooperate in the turning of a single furrow. Owing, however, to the spacing of the parts, I find that the plow will cut a 16" furrow in heavy land with four horses, while other plows will take five to six horses and at times cannot be used at all. I also find that by using the separate shares, moldboards and landsides that there is practically no side draft to the plow. I also find that the plow will work satisfactorily at depths stay in the furrow.
Instead of the bottom of the furrow being flat and hard as the ordinary plow leaves it, the bottom is left loose to a depth of one to two inches.
The plow is shown as set for breaking. In stubble plowing the auxiliary plow beams will be shifted rearwardly as hereinbefore described. So also, for stubble plowing the angle of each moldboard 13 requires to be changed. This is effected by employing a wedge 14, which may be bolted between the shown in Fig. 6.
For shallow plowing, the moldboard pro vided with the wing 15 is preferred. he plow share alsois preferably provided with the triangular lateral extension 16.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a plow, the combination of a plural ity of spacedbeams, the rear ends of which turn downward in echelon formation; a.
share, a narrow sole plate, a mold board,
and a landside connected to each beam-,the-
parts carried by one beam being spaced from the parts carried by the next adjacent beam, the spacing between the landsides and sole lates increasing from the front rearwardly, and the parts. as a whole being adapted to turn a. single furrow.
3'. In a plow, the combinationofa plural ity of spacedbearnsthe rear" ends of which turn downward in echelon formation; means for adjusting the relative position of the beams longitudinally of the plow; a share, a narrow sole plate, a moldboard, and alandside connectedto eaehbeamQthe parts car.-

parts carriedby the next adjacent beam and adaptedas a whole to turn a single furrow. 4c; lna plowflhe' combination of a plurality of landsides; means for carrying said landsides in echelon formation and in spaced relationship, each landside having a sole parentage and a moldboard flange formed thereon; a narrow sole plate and plow share formed integrally and secured to the sole plate flange and moldboard flange 'of each landside; :and a narrow rearwardly andupwardly directed moldboardislat secured to the moldboard flangeof each landside, said slats being twistedtand curved in the directionaofj their length sothat-thejparts as a whole are adaptedto turn a single; furrow.
5. In a plow the combinationof plurality of landsides; means for carrying said landsides ,in echelon formation and in spaced relationship; a narrow; sole plate, plow share and mold .board slatbeing; connected to each' landside,i the said slatsbeing direeted up wardly and rearwardly and also twisted and curved it in the direction of their length so that the parts as a whole are adapted to turn a single furrow. y H
