Description

W. H. FARMEB.
Cultivators.
No. 152,623, Patented June 30,1874;
Jivvemfo UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM H. FARMER, OF ROME, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming palt of Letters Patent No. 152,623, dated June 30, 1874; application filed June 9, 187 4.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. FARMER, of Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to a plow having three beams, attached at their rear ends by swinging plates, and provided at their front ends with hooks and sockets, so that the distance between the plow-shares may be easily regulated. The object of the invention is to provide a device for plowing three distinct furrows at desired distances, or one wide furrow, or one wide and one narrow furrow.
Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a device embodying the elements of the invention, one of the plow-beams being removed. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of same, showing all of the plow-beams. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of same.
A in the accompanying drawings are the handles secured at their lower front ends, about the center of the center-beam B, their upper portions being connectedby the brace a passing through the upper part of the standard (J, upon the lower end of which a plow-share, D, is properly mounted. The beam B extends forward from the standard 0 a proper distance, and is connected with the 'beam E by a plate, F, pivoted to each beam,
the front end of the beam B being furnished on its sides with the hooks b, curving forward and fitting into the socket-plate d in the front ends of the beams E and H. One'or more similar hooks, e, may be secured to the sides of the beam B, a proper distance in rear of the hook b, so that when the beams E and H, or either thereof, are swung rearward they may be secured to the beam 13, thus lessening the distance between the plow-shares, or reducing the distance until both or all the shares cooperate in making a wide furrow. The beam H is of similar construction to the beam E, but of somewhat less length, and is attached to the beam B in a similar manner. The purpose of having the beam H, as stated, is to equalize the weight or draft upon the centerbeam, since, being placed farther from the center-beam than the beam E is, the draft is pro portionately greater.
By the above-described arrangement the operation of plowing three distinct furrows at once may be accomplished, or a wide and a narrow, or one very wide, furrow can be' made, it being only necessary, in the last two operations, to unhook the side beam E and swingit backward against the beam B and hook it in that position, or to close the two beams E and H upon the center beam B, and then secure them by the hooks and sockets.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the beams H B and the beam E, adjustable from the hook b to the hook e,with the adjusting-brace or swinging plate F, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM H. FARMER.
