' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MCGEE, DAVID W. MCGEE, AND WILLIAM J. MCGEE, OF FARLEY, IOVA.
IMPROVEMENT lN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,789, dated June 9, 1874 application filed october 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, J oHN MCGEE, DAvII) W. MCGEE, and WILLIAM J. MCGEE, of Farley, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improve- Inent in Gultivators, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail section, taken through the line x Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a detail section, taken through the line g/ y, Fig. 2.
This invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the frame of the machine, which consists of two side bars, connected by cross- B is the tongue of the machine, which is secured to the forward and middle crossbars of the frame A. U are the outside plowbeams, and D the inside plow beams. To the forward ends of the outside plow-beams C are attached iron straps E, having eyes formed upon their forward ends, to receive the horizontal parts of the U-shaped rod or long staple F, attached to the front cross-bar of the frame A. To the inner side of the forward part of each of the outside beams C, are attached the rear ends of the braces G, which incline inward, project forward, and have eyes formed upon their forward ends, to receive the inner end of the horizontal part of the U rod or staple F, so as to hold the outer plows vertical. To the forward end of the inner beams D are pivoted iron straps H, having eyes formed upon their forward ends, to receive the inner vertical arms of the U bars or staples F. Upon the rear end of the straps H are formed, or to them are attached, curved straps or bars I, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the upper ends of the inner arms of the U bars or staples F. To the rear ends of the beams C D are attached the standards J, the draft-strain upon which is sustainedby the brace-rods K. In the forward sides of the lower end of the standards J are formed recesses, to receive the semicylindrical plate L, attached to the rear side of the shovel M, and which has a hole formed through it to receive the bolt N, by which it is secured to the standard J.
By extending the bolt-hole in the projection L into a transverse slot, the shovel M may be adjusted to throw the soil to the right or to the left, as may be desired.
To the middle part of, each of the plowbeams C D is attached the lower end of the chain O, the upper end of which is secured by means of a hook or other suitable device, to the forward edge of a board, I), which is pivoted at the ends of its rear edge to the side bars of the frame A. To one end of the board P is rigidly attached a lever, Q, so that the plows may be raised and lowered by operatin g the lever Q. To the side of the frame A, op-
posite the end of the board P, is secured a Witn esses: Y
