To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN It. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Queen, in the county of Eddy and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to improvements in toys. p
The object of this invention is to provide a toy of this character, from which amusement for children may be derived.
Another object of this invention is to provide a toy of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular platform, which may be constructed of wood or other suitable material and is provided on its upper side at the marginal edges thereof with the reinforcing rails 1". The platform has secured thereto and rising vertically therefrom, spaced uprights 2. The lower ends of the uprights have secured thereon, rectangular blocks 3, which facilitate the securing of. the uprights to the upper side of the base or platform in a rigid manner.
A transverse cross brace 4 is secured by its ends to each upright 2 near the lower ends thereof to reinforce and increase the rigidity of the uprights.
A horizontal arm 5 is secured by one end to each upright adjacent the upper end thereof and these arms extend forwardly therefrom and are provided adjacent their outer ends with alined transverse bearing openings. The openings in the arms are designated by the numeral 6 and are adapted to receive the reduced trunnion 7 formed on the opposite enlarged ends of the shaft 8.
The above named shaft 8 is substantially ellipsoidal in cross section and has its medial portion reduced to which reduced portion is secured a gear wheel 9. The shaft tapers outwardly from its reduced medial portion toward its ends and the enlarged tapered ends of the shaft are extended laterally in opposite directions as shown at 10 and 11 respectively.
The gear 9, which is secured to the re duced portion of the shaft Sis adapted to mesh with a suitable gear carried by a driving mechanism for facilitating the rotation of the shaft in either direction, and the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The enlarged laterally projecting portions 10 and 11 at each end of the shaft are provided with an annular groove 12, and the groove in the portion 10 is adapted to receive a suitable braking mechanism designated 12, while the groove 12 in the enlarged laterally projecting portion 11 of the shaft is adapted to receive a flexible member 12 therein. It will be apparent that by virtue of the enlarged portions extending in opposite directions, upon the rotation of the shaft 8, through the medium of the gear 9, that as the enlarged portion 10 is ascending, the enlarged laterally projecting portion 11 will be descend- .ing, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A crank handle 13 is secured as at 14 to each of the trunnions 7 and located on the outer sides of the arms 5.
A driving mechanism is designated by the numeral 15 and comprises a pair of side plates 16, which have their lower ends curved outwardly as at 17 and secured to the upper sides of the supporting blocks 3 of the uprights as shown in Fig. 1. o A suitable clock mechanism, (not shown) is secured between the plates 16 at the upper ends thereof and this clock mechanism is adapted to be wound by a suitable key 17. A master gear 18 is rotatably supported between the opposing faces of the plates 16 and is adapted to mesh with the gear 9 of double piece of wire 19, which is connected at its ends and has one looped end arranged journaled in the upper end of the uprights, means secured to the platform for rotating the shaft, crank handles carried by the shaft, flexible means secured to the crank handles, a figure secured to one of the flexible means, a flexible means secured to the in the groove 12 in the enlarged laterallqg sh-aft, an animal secured to the free end extending portion 10 of the shaft 8, while the opposite looped end is arranged around the transverse brace bar. It is to be understood that the loop arranged in the groove 12 of the enlarged laterally extending portion 10 ofthe shaft is of sufficient diameter to permit of the free rotation of the shaft therein. It will also be noted that due to the flexibility of the wire the shaft may freely rotate when under pressure. An apertured button 20 is slidably arranged on the parallel portions of the wire, and this button facilitates the twisting of the wire to retard and control the rotation of the shaft 8 by the binding of the looped portions in one groove 12. It will be under stood that due to the fact that the wire 19 is continuous or doubled, it passes through the disk 2.0 and upon the twisting of the disk about one portion of the wire the other looped portion or strand will be twisted,
thus tightening or decreasing the diameter of theloops at each end thereof, and thus binding them in engagement with the shaft 8 and member 4 to retard the rotational movement of the shaft.
An animal designated by the numeral 21, such as a horse or the like is arranged upon the base 1 and at right angles to the up rights .2. The head of the animal designated 22 is pivoted to the body as at 22 and located under one of the crank handles 18 and a flexible member 23 has one end secured to the head 22 as at 2 .1: while its opposite end is secured to the crank handle as at 25. The flexible member 12, which is arranged in the other groove 12 is provided with a loop 26, which permits the shaft to freely turn within the loop 26 and at the same time lift the rear end of the animal 21 due to the fact that the free end of the flexible member 12 is connected as' at 27 to the rear end of the animal.
A figure 28 has secured to the head thereof as at 29, a flexible member 30, which has its free end secured as at 31 to the other crank handle 18, thus it can be seen that upon rotation of the shaft, the rear end of the animal will be lifted upwardly and the figure will be lifted upwardly, causing the animal to strike the figure, swinging the same outwardly, and the advantages will be apparent upon the rotation of the shaft 8 through the medium of the winding mechanism.
What is claimed is: I
1. A toy including a platform, spaced uprights secured to the platform, a shaft of the flexible means of the shaft and to the free end of the flexible member of the other crank handle, and said animal and figure adapted to be operated upon the retation of the shaft.
2. A toy including a base, uprights secured to the base, a shaft journaled in the uprights, a gear carried by the shaft, crank handles carried by the shaft, a figure associated with the base, flexible means connecting the figure with the shaft and one crank handle, a second figure secured to the other crank handle, and means for rotating the shaft for moving the figures, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A toy including a base, spaced uprights secured to the base, arms carried by the uprights, a shaft journaled in the arms, crank handles carried by the opposite ends of the shaft, a figure movably connected to one crank handle and shaft, a second figure secured to and depending from the other crank handle and located in close proximity to one end of the first named figure, and means secured to the platform for rotating the shaft and moving the figures, as and for the purpose specified.
4. A toy of the class described including a base, uprights secured to the base, arms carried by the uprights, a shaft journaled in the arms, crank handles secured to the opposite ends of the shaft, gears carried by the shaft, a figure mounted upon the base, means for connecting the figure to one crank arm and shaft, a second figure secured to the free crank arm, and means secured to the base and engaging the gear for rotating the shaft and moving the figures, as and for the purpose specified.
5. A toy of the class described including a base, spaced uprights secured to the base, a shaft journaled to the uprights, crank handles carried by the shaft, a figure secured to a crank handle and shaft, a second figure carried by another crank handle and in close proximity to the first named figure,
means carried by the base for rotating the shaft and moving the figures, and a braking mechanism secured to the shaft for retarding the rotation of the shaft, as and for the purpose specified.
6. A toy of the class described including a base, spaced uprights secured to the upper side of the base, an arm secured to each upright and extending forwardly there from, a shaft journaled in the arms, said shaft tapering from its medial portion toward its ends to provide laterally extending extensions, Which extend in opposite directions, so that when one extension is ascending, the other Will be descending, a figuremounted upon the base, means for connecting the figure to the shaft, a second figure carried by the shaft, and means for rotating the shaft and moving the figures.
7. A toy of the class described including a base, uprights carried by the base, a shaft journaled in the uprights, cranks carried by the shaft, figures carried by the cranks and shaft, a braking mechanism secured to the shaft, and a Winding mechanism secured to the base for rotating the shaft and figures, said braking mechanism retarding the rotational movement of the shaft.
