To all whom it may] concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN Swrrrn, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Meota, Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dancing Dolls, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys, having more particular reference to toys of the type in which a doll, mannikin or other figure is caused to execute certain movements.

The invention has for an object to provide a novel and inexpensive toy of this type for the amusement of children.

More specifically speaking the invention may be said to have for an object the provision of a swinging (1011 which can be caused to swing back and forth by the proper manipulation of a suitable handle.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description. and accompanying draw-.

ings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of a toy constructed according to the invention.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 3"3 of Fig. 1.

As here shown my improved toy C0111- prises briefly a frame, and a swinging figure mounted on said frame. The frame here consists of a base-bar 10 having rigid rear opposite ends thereof, the standards being here shown as braced by the diagonal struts 12 extending therebetween and the ends of the base bar. An ornamental top piece 13 may connect the upper ends of the standards 11.

Extending between, and j ournaled in, the standards 11 near the upper ends thereof is a shaft 15 formed with two cranked por site sides respectively of the center line of the frame, one end of the shaft being extended a short distance beyond the adjacent standard and having a cylindrical handle 17 fixed on the end thereof for rotation of the shaft.

I prefer to detachably journal the shaft in .any suitable means.

the standards by the means indicated most clearly in Fig. 2, the'forward face of each standard being scarfed out for a distance fromits top, as at 18, while the face of this scarfed portion is formed with a groove 19 in which the shaft is inserted, the shaft being retained in this groove by a swinging latch 20 hinged at. its upper end in the scarfed part of the standard as at 21 and having its face flush with the face of the standard, the end of the latch, and the end wall of the scarfed portion 18 being beveled upwardly and outwardly as shown at22 so asto hold the latch against displacement, these beveled surfaces being concentric to the hinge point of the latch as will be understood. A knob 23 is provided on each of the latches to enable it to be grasped and swung aside. 7

Suspended from the cranked portions 16 of the shaft 15 are a pair of rods 25 whose lower ends are connected by a foot bar 26, the rods and bar constituting a swing-like element. This swing-like element carries a doll 27 which is here arranged in a standbeing arranged to maintain this position by As here shown the rods 25 are forked at their upper ends as at 28, these forked upper ends projecting upwardly on opposite sides'of the cranked portions 16 of the shaft 15 and being secured thereto by means of plates 29 which rest 2 upon the cranked portious'of the shaft, and

have suitable apertures in their ends through which the forked ends 28 of the rods pro ject, nuts 30 being screwed upon these forked ends thereby holding them against disengagement from the plate 29.

By attaching the rods 25 to the shaft 15 as just pointed out the toy may be arranged to impart either a dancing movement to the doll by a continued rotation of the shaft 15, or'a swinging movement by an oscillation of the shaft, it being apparent that if the nuts 30 are tightened the rods will be rigidly fixed to the shaft and will swin therewith as the shaft is oscillated while if the nuts 30 are slightlyv loosened the rods have a pivotal connection with the cranks 16 and in consequence will be given an up and down on its toes.
