Description

W. W. NIEDLEY. MATCH STRIKING AND SHIELDING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED ]AN.22. 1917- Patented May 28,1918.
INVENTOR MllmmW/Vedley WITNESSES ATTOFi N EY VI B WILLIAM W. MEDLEY, 0F TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
MATCH STRIKING AND SHIELDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May es, 191s.
Application led January 22, 1917. Serial No. 143,758.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. MEDLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Striking and Shielding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved match shield and the principal object of the invention is to provide an improved shield in which the match may be lighted and protected from the wind while lighting a pipe, cigarette or cigar thus preventing the match from being extinguished by wind and also doing away with the necessity of shielding the match with the hand when lighting the same on a windy day.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this lighter that when not in use, it will collapse to a flat piece thus permitting it to be carried in the pocket without taking up room.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved match shield provided with a pipe receiving opening.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the match shield of Fig. 1 taken along the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the closure for the pipe receiving opening loosened;
lThe match shield or lighter is provided with a tubular body 10 formed of some material which will not readily burn and having suiicient give to permit the shield to be sprung open as shown in Fig. 3 by compressing the shield from opposite edges. Then compressed, the shield opens as shown in Fig. 3 and the match can then be inserted and struck against the strip of emery 11 thus lighting the match. It has been stated that emery will be used for striking the `match but it is obvious that any other rough substancecould be substituted. The cigarette or cigar will be inserted in the shield after the match has been struck and can then be readily lighted without danger of the wind blowing the match out.
For use in connection with a pipe, the shield is provided with a cut out forming an opening 12, through which the pipe may be inserted as in Fig. 3 and lighted by means of the match positioned within the shield. This opening l2, it will be noted, consists of two semi-circular cut outs which are formed in opposite sides of the shield and communicate with one another at one edge thereof, so that when the shield is opened, these cut outs define a substantially circular aperture through which the bowl of the pipe may be inserted. The shield may also be provided upon one side with suitable buttons or fasteners 13 for locking engagement with a flap 14 arranged to cover the opening 12.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a match shield or lighter which is easy to manufacture, and is of such a structure that a pipe, cigarette or Cigar may be lighted without danger of the Wind extingulshing the match and, furthermore, in collapsed position, it is adapted to be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user.
What is claimed is A striking and shielding device comprising a normally fiat body open at one end, the body being formed of flexible material and moved to an open position through pressure applied upon opposite side portions thereof, the adjoining edge portions of said body being provided with registering cutouts forming a side opening for the reception of a pipe when the body is compressed and opened, and a striking medium carried by the body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. MEDLE Y.
