UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
LOUIS B. VINCENT, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
MATCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 585,066, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed March 20, 1 8 9 6.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, Louis B. VINCENT, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention has for its object to provide a simple and cheap match-box having a smokers shield, whereby the user may light a cigar, cigarette, or pipe without liability of having the match extinguished by gusts of wind; and it consists in certain improvements hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a match-box provided with my improvements, showing the shield closed; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the shield open; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view; Fig. 4:, a cross-sectional View, and Fig. 5 a view of a detail.
Similar reference-numerals in the several figures indicate similar parts.
1 indicates a match-box which may be of the ordinary or any-preferred construction, being provided with a hinged lid or cover 2, as usual. On one side of the box is provided a folding side piece 3, hinged to the rear edge and having a spring 4 for opening it to the position in Fig. 2, the forward edge of the latter hav-' ing a perforated tongue or hasp 5, adapted to cooperate with a lug 6 on a spring 7, arranged inside the match-box or otherwise. In the present construction the upper end of this spring is only accessible when the lid 2 is turned back, as shown. The pintle S, on which the side piece 3 is hinged, is preferably made, as shown in Fig. 4, with the spring 4 encircling the bent-in portion, so as to conceal it within the box. The upper and lower ends of the side piece 3 are connected to the corresponding ends of the match-box by the segmental triangular top and bottom flaps 9, preferably of thin sheet material, made in Serial No. 584,173. (No model.)
two sections pivoted together by pins 10, passing through curved ears 11 formed thereon.
The upper end of the side piece 3 is in the present arrangement adapted to come inside of the cover 2 of the box when closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that it will be necessary to open the match-box before the side piece 3 can be opened, but this, though preferable, is not essential.
It will be understood that when the box is opened and the catch released the side piece 3 will fly open to the position in Fig. 2, pro vidin g a chamber or recess in which the match can be struck and the flame protected from the wind and into which the cigar or pipe can be thrust to light it. The interior of the chamber thus formed is preferably lined with a sheet of flexible asbestos 12, the inner surface of which is covered with a preparation on which the so-called safety matches are capable of being lighted, or, if desired, ordinary sandpaper or other rough surface could be provided for striking the matches upon.
In order to make the upper and lower flaps tight to prevent the entrance of air, I preferably form thesections of the flaps 9 with small flanges 13 opposite to the ears turned to form the hinges, as shown in Fig. 2, which perform the office mentioned, and also form stops to prevent the sections from turning upwardwhen desired to close the side piece 3.
Match boxes constructed in accordance with my invention are simple and cheap and will enable a smoker to light his cigar or pipe without liability of having the match extinguished by gusts of wind.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide match-boxes with folding or collapsible chambers serving as shields to prevent the extinguishment of matches by gusts of wind, and do not, therefore, claim such devices, broadly.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the match-box having the cover, the folding side piece 3 hinged to the box and extending within the cover when closed, the catch for retaining the side piece and the spring for opening it, of the segmental flaps, each composed of two parts pivoted together and to the top and botflaps pivoted to the ends of the box and side tom of the side piece and box and adapted to piece, and adapt-ed to fold between them, sub- IO fold between the latter, substantially as destantially as described. scribed. 7 T v 2. The combination with the match-box LOUIS x having the cover 2, of the side piece hinged Vitnesses: to the box and extending Within the cover GEO. HERBERT SMITH, when the latter is closed, and the flexible G. XVILLARD RICH.
