A. M. JONES & Z. GLIMM.
ABDOMINAL BAND AND HOSE SUPPORIER. APPLICATION FILED MAY19. 1916.
1,262,804. I Patented A ryw, 1918.
WITNESSES l/E/VTORS ALICE M. JONES AND ZELLA GLIMM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ABDOMINAL BAND AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1 6, 1918.
Application filed May 19, 1916. Serial No. 98,481.
To all whom ii may concern:
Be it known that we, ALICE M. J onus and ZELLA GLIMM, are citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Bands and Hose-Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, such as will enable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an abdominal lifting and supporting band which is an chored in position on the body of the wearer, and with respect to its more specific features, to a combination binder band and hose supporter for children.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of an efiicient device of the character above referred to designed to cause the growing child to assume an erect posture with a relatively flat back and abdomen.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a practical supporter of the character referred to which may be easily put on and taken off and will not deleteriously interfere with the movements of the wearer.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and wherein imilar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views- Figure 1 is a view of an embodiment of the invention when lying flat'and removed from the body of the wearer;
Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the device as applied to the body of the wearer, looking at the front;
Fig. 3 is a new similar to Fig. 2, looking at the back; and
Fig. 4 is a view imilar to Figs. 2 and 3, but looking toward the side of the wearer.
In the ordinary forms of childrens hose supporters, the pull exerted upon the hose to maintain their proper adjustment is borne by the shoulders of the wearer, the support; ers having either shoulder strap or are attached to a waist or the like which hangs from the shoulders. This pull upon the shoulders urges the shoulders forward, causes the shoulder blades to protrude sharply and unnaturally, causes the formation of a sharp, forward bend in the spine near its base, and allows the abdomen to protrude outwardly and to hang down in a manner very harmful to health, since when the body is o positioned the intestines assume a position in which they are unable to properly perform their functions, and thus severely impairing the health of the person.
It is to overcome the above mentioned objectionable features and others found in the ordinary hose supporters, and to the restraining of the body from assuming such harmful positions that our invention is particularly directed, although other beneficial features are present, as will be pointed out hereafter, and to these ends we have constructed a combined garter and abdominal lifter which is not only free from the above objectionable features, but also is useful in restoring the parts of the body so positioned to their natural, normal and healthful position.
The invention comprises a generally crescentrically shaped band of flexible material. The wider portion of the band is adapted to be placed contiguous the hypogastric region of the abdomen and extends therefrom as it narrows in opposite directions about and contiguous the hips and the portion of the bodywhere the small of the back joins the top of the buttocks, at which latter place the ends are held adjustably together by a buckle carried by one end and in this man nor the band is held in its proper encircling position about the body. In this position the portion of the band contiguous the abdomen bears upwardly and inwardly against it and by binding it in place acts as g a binder to prevent the abdomen from falling downwardy or outwardly. The amount of tension and binding effect exerted by the band may be regulated by manipulating the ends of the band in connection with the buckle so as to either increase or decrease the size of the encircling element of the band. The band is prevented from slipping downward by the natural protrusion of the hips and buttocks of the wearer upon which the band rests, and to restrain upward movement of the binder there are attached two tabs of flexlble material, preferably,
though not necessarily, elastic, to the band,
one at each portion of the band adjacent each hip, in such a way that these tabs eX- tend downwardly therefrom on lines respectively between the median side line of the body and the spinal column, and near the lowerends of these tabs we have attached garter clamps, whereby the tabs may regulation of the degree of tension exerted upon the hose and permit their adjustment to various lengths of hose. The point of attachment of these tabs is an important feature of our invention, since by attach-' ing them as above described they serve to anchor the band in place irrespective of the posture assumed by the wearer thus insuring the proper positioning of the band at all times and preventing the band from shifting with the change of posture of the wearer.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings 1 represents the binder band of flexible, preferably inelastic material such as cotton or linen cloth. The band is crescentrically shaped, having an upper generally concave edge 2 and a lower convex edge 3. The upper edge has a slight upward swell at the front as at 3. The numeral i indicates one end portion of the band and 5 represents a buckle attached to the band near its other ench as at 6, leaving an end portion 7 free to be interposed between the buckle and the skin of the wearer to prevent irritation or chafing. The buckle is adapted to be adjustably fastened onto the end portion l to hold the band in proper encircling position about the body of the wearer. 8 indicates the wider portion of the band which is to be worn contiguous the hypogastric portion of the abdomen, so that when the band is in position the abdomen will be lifted and supported, as shown in Figs.- 2 and 4f, the remaining portions of the band extending therefrom in opposite directions adjacent to and restin upon the hips,- and the top of the buttocks of the wearer, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and i. 9 and 10 are anchoring members, or tabs, attached to the band at points 11 and 12, which points are adjacent th hips of the wearer and these tabs are adapted to hang downwardly therefrom along the sides of the thighs on lines respectively between the median sidelines of the body and the spinal column, as before described and as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Near the lower end of each tab, we have attached garter clasps 13 and 1d of ordinary form, which clasps are adapted to fasten onto the hose of the wearer, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to anchor the band against upward movement.
V The device is put on in the following manner: The band is grasped by the hand and the central or wider portion is placed ment, and at the naeaeoa contiguous the hypogastric portion of the abdomen, and the remaining portions of the band are then wound about the body in opposite directions over the tops of the hips and buttocks until the ends meet at the back. The end not carrying the buckle is then inserted into the buckle and pulled until the desired upward and inward binding tension of the band against the abdomen is obtained whereupon this end is fastened into the buckle. Then each tab is adjusted to the desired length and is fastened onto the hose at such points as will effect the desired anchoring of the belt against upward movesame time effect the proper positioning of the hose. These adjustments may be made at any time without it being necessary to remove or otherwise manipin late the device, and to take 01% the device the operations described for putting it on are executed in reverse order.
Thus by the above described construct-ion are accomplished among others, all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.
As many changes could be made in theabove construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from, the scope thereof. it is intended that all matter contained-in the. above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween. Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 7 H A combine garter and abdominal lifter for children comprising a flexible band adapted to be worn around the body and to lift and support the abdomen, and two pendent anchoring members connected to said band and extending therefrom on lines respectively between the median side line of the body and the spinal column and adapted.
to be connected to the hose, said pendent members providing the sole hose supporting connection from said ban Tntestimony whereof we aih'x our signatures in the presence of two witnesses,
ALICE M. JONES. ZELLA GLIMM. Witnesses HELEN MroHnLsoN, Es'rnrnn R. WYNNE.
