Description

A. R. BROWN.
BRUSH HOLDER.
APPLICATION man oc. 2, |915.
Patented'Mar. 5. 1918.
. s S N n w zal ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRUSH-HOLDER.
T0 all/whom 'it may concern.'
lle it known that l, ALFRED R. BROWN, a subject of' the King of Great Brita-in, residing at lethersfielch in the county of Hartford and State of' Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Holders, of which the following is a sliecification.
This invention has relation to an article support adapted to be clasped upon the rim of a cooking Avessel, paint can or other re ceptacle and to support thereon, a spoon, fork, paintI brush or the like in a position available for instant use in connection with the receptacle upon which 'it is supported.
Another object of Athe invention is to provide a device having the above named characteristics and whiclrniay `be 'manufacturedl-'y with a minimum number of parts, andinan economical manner.
In addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the de- 'tails of construction, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully7 described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear vFigure l is a view in vertical section of a device constructed after the manner of my invention, and illustrating its application to the rim of' a paint can,
Fig. 2 is a face view of the device,
Fig. is a view thereof in plan, and
Fig. 4 is a view of the tubular resilient element for retaining the clamping'elements of the device in proper relation.
vlith reference to the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate the co-acting and relatively mov able jaw members of my device, said jaw members being in the form of substantially rectangular fiat metal plates, curved transversely to conform tothe curvature of the vertical wall of a cylinder vessel. The jaw members are normally disposed in parallel relation, and their upper portions are reduced to form finger grips 3, said finger grips being then bent outwardly and away from each in diverging relation.
To retain the jaw members in proper relation to each other and to permit relative movement thereof toward and away from eachother, I provide a member 3 in the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5,1918.`
Application aiedoctober 2, 191e. serial N. 123,415.
form of' a tubular sleeve, severed longitu,w dinally and throughout its lengthras Indicated ata, and provided substantially opposite said severed portions with transversely spaced longitudinally extending openings 5, of a length corresponding to the width of the reduced finger grips 3. In assembling the parts of the device, theJ` reduced finger grip portion 3 of each of the jaw members is extended through one of the openin s 5 of the sleeve member, and the edges o the severed portion l are adapted torest in transverselyformed grooves 6 provided in the face ofeach of the jaw members. Owing 'to the resiliency of the tubular member 3 and its tendency to retain the edges of the severedv portion 4 in engagement, the jaw members .l` are-resiliently'vurged toward each fot-her, and the finger grip ortions 3 separated to a corresponding degree. To dis pose the device upon the edge of a utensil or the like, it is obviously but necessary to grasp the upper ends of the finger grip members 3 between the thumbv andv forenger of one hand, bringing said nger grip portions together so as to separate the jaw members. This is accomplished against the tension of the tubular member 3" which is distorted through the operation, and when the 'jaw members are disposed one at each side of the edge of a receptacle, by releasing the finger grip member 3.,.the jaws are brought together and clamped upon the edge of' the receptaclethereby rigidly but detachably retaining the device thereon.
Each of' the finger grip members 3 provided Vwith a longitudinally extending V- shaped notch 7, in transverse alinement, and the material forming the edge of the notches is serrated as indica-ted at 8. The upper ends of the finger grip portions 3 adjacent each longitudinal edge may further be provided with an opening 9 whereby the device may be supported upon a. suitable support which is adapted to penetrate said openings.
Obviously, when a device of this char-` acter is engaged upon the edge of a receptacle, and in .the drawings a paint can has been used, a brush ma be rested with its handle portion within At e V-shaped notches 7, the rictional engagement therewith being enhanced by reason of the serrated edge 8. The brush is thus held reasonably secure aga-inst accidental displacement and at the same time available when the brush is to be used.
y When the device is applied to the kedge of l a cooking utensil, itforms a convenient sup-` v port for a spoon, fork or thelike to retaln the samein an available'position and thus -obviate the necessity of ermitting the tablel warel to remain upon t e receptaclet-o becmneexcessively heated. Thus it will' be seen that I have provided a novel and simple device which may be adapted fory a great number oflusesfand which-may bemanufacturedfat a low costi y -While Ihave herein illustrated kand del scribed m 'invention with some degreeof` particularlty, I' realize that in practice va-A rious alterations thereover may be. emade,l
