Be it known that we, ADoLrrI LINKS and BENJAMIN KRAUs, citizens or theUnited States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful lm provemen ts in Chalk-Hold ers, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in chalk or marker holders "for use by tailors and the like.

its object is to provide a simple, cheap, and practical holder and protector for the chalk or marking substance.

The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of single holder. Fig. 2 is a section through same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of double holder. Fig. 4 is a section through protector. Fig. 5 is perspective view of same with one side removed, showing sharpening device.

A represents our holder, made from a single piece of spring sheet metal bent centrally upon itself and having a width about equal to thatof the usual tailors chalk. The gripping ends of the holder are normally pressed together, but are readily separated by pressure on the buttons 2, which have their stems secured one to one jaw and projecting through a hole or slot in the opposite jaw and the other secured to the latter jaw and projecting through the first-named jaw. By simultaneously pressing in on both buttons the jaws open; releasing the buttons the jaws close.-

The jaws are each slotted transversely adjacent to their ends, as shown at 3, and the edges of these slots are-turned in slightly to form broad sharp teeth which bite into the chalk and keep it from wabbling or slipping when being used. By slotting the jaws in this manner two widely-separated grippingsurtaces are provided on each side of the chalk.

In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of the invention in the form of a double holder where it is desired, as is frequently the case, to use two chalks of diflerent colors. .111 this case the same kind of a holder as lirst described is en'lployed, to which the opposed coacting spring-clips i are secured by means of the rivets or otherwise. These clips are slotted similarly as the jaws of the holder A and are separated by means of the buttons 2.

In order to preserve the chalk when not in use, we employ a protector or cap which comprises two thin spring-plates 6, secured together intermediate or their ends and adapted to be slipped over the protruding end of the chalk in the holder and to embrace the sides of the latter. The opposite ends of the plates may be flared outwardly, as at 7, and between these flared ends is contained a V- shaped sharpener 8, but forming no part of the present invention.

The object of the spring-caps is to protect the )rotruding end of the chalk in the holder A from breaking when lying on the table, as by having a bolt of cloth or other heavy substance thrown on it, and to keep the chalk from rubbing OH in case the holder is carried in the pocket.

An instrument of this character conduces to neatness and cleanliness, is simple, needs no adjusting, holds the chalk securely, allows the chalk to be readily released and a fresh piece to be inserted, and protects the chalk when not in use.

It is obvious that various modifications of our invention are possible without departing from the principle thereof.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A chalk-holder comprising a single piece or spring metal bent upon itself to form two normally closed coacting spring-jaws approxi mately coextensive in width with the width of the contained chalk, said jaws having transverse slots adjacent to their gripping ends, the rear walls oi said slots adapted to impinge upon the chalk and cooperate with the ends of the jaws to grip the chalk and hold it against twist.

2. A chalk-holder comprising a single piece of spring metal bent upon itself to form two normally closed coacting spring jaws and means carried by the jaws for opening them,

said means including a pin on each jaw projecting through an opening in the opposite jaw, said pins provided with buttons for engagement by the fingers.

3. A chalk-holder comprising a single piece of spring metal bent upon itself to form two normally closed coacting springjaws, said jaws slotted adjacent to their gripping ends and provided with a plurality of separated extended gripping edges, and means for opening the jaws.

4. A chalk-holder comprising a single piece of spring metal bent upon itself to form two normally closed coacting spring jaws, said jaws slotted adjacent to their gripping ends and provided with a plurality of separated extended gripping edges, means for opening the jaws, said means including studs or pins on each jaw projecting through the opposite jaw and provided with means for engagement by the fingers.

5. A chalk-holder comprising two opposed normally closed spring-actuated jaws, a stud on each jaw projecting through the opposite jaw and provided with means for engagement by the operator whereby a simultaneous pressure on said engaging means tends to open the jaws.

6. A chalk-holder comprising two opposed normally closed spring-actuated jaws, and a stud on each jaw projecting through the opposite' jaw and provided with means for engagement by the operator whereby a simultaneous pressure on said engaging means tends to open the jaws.

7. The combination with a chalk holder comprising two spring-actuated jaws of a spring-cap arranged to slip over said jaws to protect the contained chalk.

8. The combination with a chalkholder comprising two spring-actuated jaws of a removable protective spring-cap therefor.

9. The combination with a chalk-holder having jaws engaging the opposite sides of the chalk, of a removable spring cap or protector adapted to inclose the protruding end of the chalk and embrace the jaws.
