'D. G. GAY.
WRENCH.
APPLIOATION PILED SEPT. e, 1912.

PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL G. GAY, OF SUMMERVILLE, OREGON.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1914.
Application filed September 6, 1912. Serial No. 718,963.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL G. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summerville, in the county of Union, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same This invention has special reference to wrenches and more particularly to a wrench having pivoted handles with their jaws adapted to move in opposite directions relative to the gripping portions of the handles and so disposed and connected that it is unnecessary to cross the same, whereby the weakening of the handles at this point is rendered unnecessary.
Specifically, the invention consists in providing means in the form of a spring for drawing the free ends of the handle together, thereby causing separation of the jaws, while a block or slide is mounted between the handles and held from lateral displacement and adapted to be wedged between the handles for positively gripping an article without exerting the pressure of the hand. I
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved wrench, the same being shown in a position before engagement with an article.
Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the device engaged with the article. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken 5 on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail yiew showing the band for connecting the aws. As illustrated, my improved wrench embodies a pair of handles 10 which are ta- =9 pered in opposite directions to provide enlargements 11 terminating in jaws 12. The
handles are pivotally connected for lateral movement one with relation to the other through the enlargements as shown at 13 and such enlargements are inclosed by a strap or band 14 which incloses the bottom and side faces exteriorly of the jaws and receives the pivot therethrough to hold the jaws from displacement laterally beyond a predetermined point.
The inner faces of the jaws are provided with longitudinal grooves 15 which receive a block or slide 16 which is of substantially circular form but provided with a tapered edge portion 17 for fitting the grooves and holding the same from displacement. The free extremities of the handles are connected by a resilient element or retractile spring 18 which holds the handles in positive contact with the block or slide 16 and prevents displacement of the latter while at the same time spacing the jaws apart.
hen it is desired to grip an article between the aws of the wrench, the handles are moved on their pivot to separate the jaws assisted by the action of the spring 18 so as to space the jaws apart and freely receive the articles to be clamped therebetween. The block or slide 16 is then forced along the grooves toward the pivotal connection of the handles so as to spread the latter and moves the jaws into binding contact with the article to be gripped between the jaws whereby the same may be handled without manually gripping the same.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that a wrench structure has been provided which greatly facilitates the use of the wrench, especially in view of the fact that the article is held in a gripping position and the full leverage or use of the hand moving the same is permitted without the necessity of exerting the pressure of the hand and fingers thereof for clamping the article.
The device embodies a simple combination of parts which will prove strong and durable and economical toproduce.
I claim:
1. A wrench comprising a pair of handles, said handles having convex enlargements near one end and oppositely tapered therefrom, a strap inclosing the enlargements and limiting the pivoting of the handles, a pivot connecting one handle with the strap, means for normally drawing the handles together to separate the jaws and wedge means for spreading the handles and holding the jaws in clamping engagement with an article, said means com-prising a roller disk arranged with its axis transverse to the line of its movement, said disk being located between the handles and provided with means for retaining the disk against lateral displacement.
2. A Wrench comprising handles adapted for pivotal movement, said handles having 5 convex portions pivotally engaged and having longitudinal grooves in their inner faces, a spring connecting the free ends of the handles to hold the jaws separated and a circular Wedge disk operating in the groove to move the jaws together said disk 10 having its axis transverse to its line of movement.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
