Description

J. D. MOORE.
PIPE WRENCH.
APPLICATION men MAR.5,1918.
Patented May 28,1918.
I 1 it til JOSEPH D. MOORE, 0F BURKETT, TEXAS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Application filed March 5, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr D. MooRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burkett, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inPipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches and has for one of its objects the provision of a pipe wrench which has a relatively movable jaw rendering the wrench self-adjustable when applied to a pipe and the greater the pressure applied to the handle of the stationary jaw, the tighter the grip of the pipe between the movable and stationary jaw.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a relatively movable jaw having a pair of spaced parallel shanks which are at right angles to the jaw to permit it to be pivotally secured to the handle of the relatively stationary jaw and in such a manneras to permit this jaw to lie back upon the handle before its application to the pipe.
A further object of this invention is to provide a relatively movable jaw having a pair of spaced parallel shanks formed integrally with one end and in chordal relation thereto so as to permit it to be pivotally secured to the handle of the stationary jaw to permit the relatively movable jaw to be adjusted and in full abutting engagement with the active face of the relatively stationary jaw.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe wrench as made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the wrench.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner in which the movable jaw v A Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 220,592.
issecured to handle.
- Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the wrench in its entirety and it comprises a tapered handle 6 having its enlarged end curved downwardly and forwardly to provide a curved relatively stationary jaw 7 having its convex surface serrated as at 8 to provide the active face of the jaw. The handle 6 is provided adjacent the point of juncture with the downwardly and forwardly curved jaw 7 with a pair of relatively spaced transverse openings 9, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
A relatively movable jaw 10' is adapted to be pivotally secured to the handle of the stationary jaw and this jaw 10 is curved to provide a concave inner active face and a convex outer face. The concave active face is serrated as at 11 so as to coiiperate with the serrations 8 of the stationary jaw to permit the jaws to be firmly clamped upon a pipe or other article designated A in the drawing. The rear end of the jaw 10 is bent downwardly at right angles thereto and bifurcated to provide a pair of spaced parallel shanks 11. The shanks 11 are at substantially right angles to the curved jaw 10 and in chordal relation thereto and the terminals of these shanks are pivotally secured in the openings 9 of the handle 6 by suitable bolts 12 extending transversely therethrough and having secured to the free ends the nuts 13. It will be apparent that by virtue of the chordal relation of the straight shanks to the active face of the relatively movable jaw it permits the active face of this jaw to be adjusted from a full abutting engagement with the active face of the relatively stationary jaw.
It is also apparent that by virtue of the openings 9 the jaws 10 may be moved forwardly or rearwardly as desired with rela tion to the stationary jaw 7 In use, the jaw 10, which is a movable jaw, is swung back against the handle 6 and the article A is placed upon the convex serrated face of the stationary jaw 7 the movable jaw is then tilted forwardly until its concave serrated face engages the pipe or other article and by applying a downward Patented May as, rare.
the relatively stationary jaw pressure on. the handle '6 the article 'or pipe is firmly gripped between the two jaws and accidental displacement of it is avoided.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A wrench comprising a tapered handle having its enlarged end curved downwardly and forward-1y to provide a relatively stationary jaw, the convex face of which is serrated, a curved relatively movable jaw having a serrated concave face having formed integrally with its rear end a pair of depending spaced shanks, said shanks being at substantially right angles to the jaw (Sonic: 0! this patent may be obtained to:
in chordal relation thereto and adapted 15 to have their terminals pivotally secured to the handle in rear of the stationary jaw, and
said handle provided with means whereby the movable jaw may be adjusted longitudinally with relation to the active face of 20 the stationary jaw.
