GRAIN-CAR DOOR.
Application :tiled August 10,1914.
To all whom t mag/concern.'
Be it known that l, RICHARD TVVEBB BUR- NE'r'r,` a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Car Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates more particularly to displaceable door-jambe which are adapted to when in one position retain a removable door in closed position and when the door is opened or removed be moved to a position affording practically full clearance lthrough the door opening.
The invention may be said briefly to consist of a hinged or pivoted door-jamb, the aXis of which is near the outer wall of the car, a door-jamb receptacle being carried by the door-post in position to receive the door-J amb when swung from door-retainin position and a vertical slidable key carried by the door-post adapted to lock the doorjainb in either position.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference mustv be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts7 and wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line A A Fig. l and illustrating a portion of a car side with removable grain door and my improved means for retaining and locking the removable grain door in place;
Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. l of the side of thedoor carrying mv improved door retaining means illustrated in different position;
Fig. 3' is a similar view to Fig. 1, the section being taken on line C C Fig. il; and
Fig. 4c is a vertical sectional view taken on line B B Fig. 1 and illustrating in a fragmentary way the upper portion of the doorframe, the grain door and my improved door retaining means;
Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4l of the lower portion of the door frame, etc.;
Fig. 6 is a detail face view of the device for containing the key and under certain conditions reinforcing the door-jamb;
Fig. 7 is a sectional perspective view illustrating the door-jamb locked in door sup- Speccation of Letters Patent.

perspective view of the key re- Vjamb being received by a receptacle in the form of a channel-iron and a vertically movable key serving to lock the door-jamb in either door-retaining position or within the receptacle.
The sheathing or wall of the car is indicated at b, the door-post at c, removable grain-door at d, door-jamb above referred to at e, the receptacle at f and the key at g. The specific construction of the door-jamb consists of a plate folded back upon itself to present a stiffened orreinforced portion el extending from its free edge to within close proximity to its pivot7 the latter being constituted by a pair of substantially half round bars c2 fastened to the opposite sides of the inner edge .portion of the door-jamb, the lower end of these bars acting as a hinge pin c3 pivoted in a threshold angle cL carried as usual by a side-sill c5. The lower end of the jamb is cut away to afford the hinge pin. The floor e, also as usual, is carried by the side-sill and the surface thereof is flush with the surface of the threshold angle. The upper end of the pivot is rotatably set in a socket e7 cast withl an attachment flange es by which it is fastened to the door-post by rivets e9 through a channel iron` f. This flange extends laterally and upwardly from the socket which is also cast with a pair of angular fianges 61 upon its face serving asia guide for the key g. A pressed shape of irregular channel form is secured to the door-post angle 7c the upper half f of which is narrower than the lower half f1 but one side edge of the upper half being in vertical alinement with the corresponding edge on the lower half. This side has a continuous flange f2, the flange f3 at the opposite side of the upper portion being` equal in width to the flange f2 and the flange ff of the lower portion being of reduced width acting` as a stop or support for the door-jamb when it is swung` to a position releasing the door. Thedoor-jamb is adapted to bear against this flange ft thus reinforcing the former and making a grain tight joint. The door-jamb when open lies substantially parallel to the web of the channel and behind the flange f2 outwardly relatively to the car side.
The door-jamb as before mentioned is held in door retaining position and position closing the door by the key g. This key consists of a comparatively heavy bolt slidably retained in the slideway formed by the flanges el@ and having lits upper end turned outwardly as at g1 and its lower end provided with a lug g2, to prevent upward withdrawal of the key. This key and its guiding flanges are constructed and arranged to have one edge of the key support the reinforced portion el of the door-jamb when the lat- Y ter is in position supporting the grain door and clamp the doorj amb within the receptacle formed by the portion f of the channel when the grain ,door is displaced. rIhe door is retained against inward displacement by stops m one only of which is illustrated in the drawings.
The manner of pivoting the door-jamb permits it to rest at all times on the threshold plate thus making a grain tight joint at this point; and the particular arrangement of channel f with its flange f2 located a short distance from the edge of the door-post angle c aifords a jamb for the outside door not shown when closed thus making ak weather and spark-proof joint f between outside door and door-post when the door is closed.
`The plate forming the door-jamb presents an obtuse angle in cross-section in order to causey it to have its reinforced edge lie in proper door-retaining position and to lie parallel to the web of channel iron f when swung to position clearing the door. The advantage of this arrangement of parts is that the whole is conned within comparatively small limits.
The lower end of the flange f3 and a portion of the web of f are cut away the latter formingV an opening flo to accommodate the back of the casting to permit it to be set back and bring the top pivot of the door-j amb Copies of this patent may be obtained for Iiush with the web oi the channel and in close proximity to the door post and Hange The side of the casting 'forms a continuation of the flange f3 and together they form a rigid jamb for the upper graindoor.
What I claim is as follows:-
l. rI`he combination with the side of a car having an opening and a door adapted to be moved through said opening, of a doorjamb constructed and arranged to support the door in closed position and be moved to a position clearing the door, oi unitary means whereby the said door-j amb is locked in both door-supporting and door-clearing positions, said means consisting of a verlically slidable key adapted to lie in flat contact with the said doorjamb when locking the same.
2. The combination with the side of a car having a door opening, a door, and a door-jamb for the door and pivoted at itl lower end in the door opening, of a unitary homogeneous member located above the door-jamb and having a socket and keyway the upper end of the door-j amb being pivoted in such socket and a key slidably mounted in said keyway for locking the door-jamb.
8. The combination with the side of a ear having an opening and a door adapted to be moved through said opening, of a door-jamb constructed and arranged to support the door in closed position and be moved to a position clearing said door, of means whereby the said door-jamb is locked in both door-supporting and door-clearing positions, said locking means being constructed and arranged to assume the same position when locking the door-jamb in door-clearing position as in door-supporting position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication in the presence olf two witnesses.
