My invention relates more particularly to thelocks of; removable` grain doors and it has for its object tocimprove and simplify thev means for retaining doors of thisY class.
It has beenfound that the door locks or retainers as heretofore' constructed have .frequently caused the doors to be jammed by the grain pressure and thatthey couldonly be opened with great difficulty or their `de-` struction hasbeen necessary to dischargev the grain. My invention is designed to overcome this diiiiculty.
According to .my invention the removable door is supported at` opposite, side edges against thevpressure of the grain byV ixed and displaceable doorjambs, andthe fixed jamb has. a seat allowing the door limited movement to permit sufficient of the load to flow lout of the car to relieve the pressure but by which the door is held until liftede from place by the crew `unloading the car, the displaceable door jambfbeing adapted to be swung entirely out of the way. One of the door posts has a vertical groove c in line with which a socket d is set in the threshhold e. A round hinge bar is divided longitudinally and diametrically and the halves f f thereof aresecured preferably by rivets g to the opposite sides of thecwider legof anunequal angle-iron` 71, thus ormingwith the portion of the angle iron` between them a substantially round hinge bar. Y The lower ends of thesehalfround parts protrude downwardly below the angleiron and are rotatably seated in the socketol`7 and a hinged relation between the hinge bar and door post is effected by a pair of straps b1. 71.2 secured to the door post and claspingl the hinge bar, the straps h2 passingthrougha sloth3 in thek angle iron h. Thedoor postisnotched at its outer edge asatm to receive the angle iron lz as will be presently shown, the` post extending in widthsuiiiciently from the groove toward the interior of the` car to equal the width of the 4angle-iron outside measurement while the width frornthe` groove to the outside notchededge equals the width of the angle iron inside measurement. The `removable grain door is indicated at z'. This angle iron serves the double purpose of a door jamb and lockand the connection between the hinge bar j andldoor post and between tlre langle iron and grain door presents an effective grain seal.
The door is heldxagainst inward displacement relative `to the car at one side by a strapyc extending'fromtop to bottom of the, grainV door andy having openings 7d therein through which the removable grain doors may be nailed to the door postfwhen necessary, this strap being bent to substantially bayonet form in cross-section and supported by a filling strip 7a2. The opposite side edge of the door is supported by pivoted clips 29 held in place by a strap 1' and lag screws s, a strap being, like the strap le', bent to substantially bayonet form in cross section and supported by a filling strip t. These straps 7c and r besides serving directly and indirectly respectively as supports for the door protect the edges of the latter from the plow or cable pulling the latter when the car is being discharged thereby and they also prevent the side posts of the door frame from being destroyed by having nails driven into the same at many different places, when removable doors are to be nailed in place., the nailing being limited to the space exposed by the openings 7c.
The angle-iron k` is located in positions retaining the door and thrown clear of the door by two or more pairs of buttons u o, the buttons of each pair being adapted when the angle iron is in its respective positions Y a sufficient distance to allow limited movement of the door outwardly.
Another' advantage of the straps la h2 is that they serve to protect the door postsV against dama-ge from trucks used for loading the car with other lading than wheat such as bagged material, machinery and other things; and another advantage of the grooved door post is that it braces the hinge bar f and prevents distortion thereof.
Operation: The angle-iron is swung to door locking position and the buttons u u turned to lock it in place. The clips p are swung to clear the door and the door is set with one edge in the seat presented by the strap 7c, filler 7a2 and door post Z2 then swung into Contact with the angle-iron h after which the clips p are moved into engagement with the door. When it is desired to discharge the car the buttons u are turned to register with the slots'w which will release the angle-iron and allowit to swing with its hinged bar f to the dotted position shown in Fig. l, the pressure of the grain within the car forcing the door to the dotted position shown, thus permitting some of the lading to How out. When the pressure upon the door has in this manner dropped suiliciently the train crew can lift the door from place and allow the discharge of the lading to be completed.
What I claim is as follows 1. The combination with the side of a car having an opening and a door adapted to swing outwardly through the opening, of a door jamb of angle cross-section and means pivotally securing the edge of the flange of the door amb to one `side of the door-open-V ing midway between the inside and outside faces of the car side and in position to lie with one flange in flat contactwith the said side of the door opening and its other flange in the plane of and sustaining the door when closed and when swung out to clasp the out- -side edge of the said side of the door-openmg.
,2. rIhe combination with the posts of a door opening in the side of a car and a door7 of a combined door jamb and lock consisting of an angle-iron, the said angle-iron being constructed and arranged when in door retaining position to have one flange lie in flat contact with one of the door posts and the other flange lie in the plane of and sustain the door when closed, a hinge bar carrying the angle-iron and consisting of a pair of members riveted to opposite sides ofthe fiange of the angle-iron and means pivoting the hinge bar in the door frame.
3. The combination with the side of a car having an opening therein and a door for closing the said opening, of a swinging door retaining device of angle cross-section, means securing the retaining device at one side of the door opening, such retaining device being constructed and arranged to clasp the outside edge of the said side of the opening when out of door retaining position.
