To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD WEBB BUR- NETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grain-Door Seals and Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grain door seals and locks.
One object of the invention is to provide means for sealing and locking grain doors and more particularly grain doors of railway cars, so arranged as to reduce to a minimum the time and labor required for closing and opening the cars and to also prevent any waste of the boards employed to form the doors. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a grain door seal and locking arrangement so constructed that it is adapted to form a seal for the entire height of the door opening whenever it is necessary for carrying certain grades of lighter grains, such as oats- A still further object of the invention is to provide a seal for grain doors for cars, and more particularly for that type of cars employing steel frame work, wherein the means for locking the sealing device proper is rendered substantially inaccessible for operation when the outside door of the car is closed and sealed in the usual manner, to thereby prevent tampering with the grain door without leaving visual evidence thereof.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices herein shown, described and forming the subject matter of claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a. car showingmy improvements in connection therewith, the grain door being shown in place and the outer car door being omitted. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and showing the outer car door in closed and sealed position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged, bro-ken, vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 4% of Fig. 6 and illustrating more particularly the means for locking the door jamb. Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes the sheathing or boards of the side wall of a car, 11 the roof boards, the side wall of the car being provided with a door opening and having an angle door post 12 on one side and a larger angle door post 13 on the opposite sides The lintel of the door opening is desig- 'nated at 14 and the threshold plate by the reference 15. v
As clearly appears from Fig. 2, the door post .12 extends beyond the adjacent portions of the side wall and, in conjunction with a vertically extending plate 16 secured to the inner face of the side wall, forms a recess 17 to receive the right hand ends of the door sections 18 and 19. On the other side of the door opening, the inner face of the car wall is provided with a plurality of pivoted buttons 1919 (see Fig. 9), which are adapted to extend beyond the opening when in horizontal position and thereby prevent the door sections from. falling inwardly. The buttons 19 are held in horizontal posi= tion by means of stops 20* and it is obvious that the buttons may be swung vertically to thus clear the door opening.
The door post 13 is offset from the adjacent edge of the door opening, as clearly appears in'Fig. 2, and on the inner face of the door post 13, that is the face adjacent the door opening, is secured a channel member 20, the latter having its inner flange 21 spaced a short distance from the outer face (of the side wall to thereby form a continu- \OHS, vertically extending seat for the door j amb hereinafter described. It will also be in proper position, the jamb sections max apparent that the channel 20 strengthens the door post against bending.
By positioning the door posts 12 and 13 with respect to the wall proper, in the manner heretofore described, 1 am enabled to provide a retaining shoulder for one edge of the grain door and a corner to receive the pivoted wing which retains the opposite edge of the grain door, without any additional members or attachments and to leave a clear door opening.
The improved door jamb for sealing the grain doors in position, preferably comprises a lower plate 22 and an upper plate 23. The lower plate 22 is of bulb section as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 and has the flange thereof preferably arranged tangential to the bulb. At its lower end, the door jamb 22 is provided with a stud 2 1 which is pivotally mounted in a suitable perforation in the threshold plate 15. At its upper end, the amb section 22 is provided with a vertically extending, rod-like portion 25, which is of reduced diameter compared to the diameter of the bulb section, the upper end of said rod portion 25 being pivotally mounted in a casting 26 secured to the underside of the lintel, (see Fig. 3). The upper amb section 23 is similar in form to the lower jamb section, but is preferably formed of a plate having one end thereof bent to provide a tube section 27 corresponding on its outside to the outside diameter of the bulb of the lower jamb section. On its inner side, the tube portion 27 is adapted to fit over the rod portion 25, the latter thereby forming a pivot for the upper jamb 1nember 23. To seal the door sections 18 and 19 22 and 23 are swung to a position with the flanges thereof parallel to and in contact with the outer face of the car side wall and outer face of the door sections, as most clearly indicated in Figs. 2, and 6. It will be noted from these figures that the diameter of the bulb section and tubular section 27 of the jamb members is such as to fit snugly within the groove or recess formed by the inner flange 21 of the channel 20, the angle door post 13, and the side wall of the car. It will further be noticed that the pivoted door jamb is braced throughout its entire length and thus is formed a grain seal for the full height of the door.
To hold the displaceable door in closed or operative position, I have provided a locking arrangement, the details of which are most clearly illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7. As there shown, the locking arrangement includes a pair of sliding locking bolts 30 and 31, one above the other and each adapted to extend through suitable perforations 32 in the outstanding flange of the door post 12. Said bolts are housed by means of a casting 28 of substantially box form having upwardly and downwardly extended flanges 2929 by which it is riveted in place, said casting being open on that side adjacent the fiange of the post 13 which is secured to the wall and partly on that side adjacent the other flange of the post 13 so that said post 13 forms a part of the housing for the bolts, to thus effect a saving in material. At their inner ends, the bolts or locks 30 and 31 are preferably tapered on their inner face as indicated at 33 to thereby facilitate moving the bolts to looking position. The bolts are suitably guided in the casting 28 and post 13 and are permanently retained in place by means of a pin 3 1 mounted in the casting 28 and which extends through elongated slots 3535 in the bolts. On their outer edges, the bolts 30 and 31 are each notched or corrugated as inc icated at 36 and cooperable" therewith are bowed springs 37 secured to the casting 28 and having their free ends 3838 adapted to engage in the notches tothereby hold the belts in adjusted position and prevent accidental displacement thereof. It will be noted that the locking arrangement above described is located at a height corresponding to the meeting edges of the door jamb sections 22 and 23. In order that the bolts may hold the jamb sections in closed position, the lower jamb section 22 is provided with an enlargement or boss 39 against which the lower bolt 31 bears, (see Fig. 6), and the upper jamb section 23 is provided with a corresponding enlargement 10 against which the upper bolt 30 bears, (see Fig. 5). When the bolts 30 and 31 are withdrawn, the amb sections may be swung outwardly to clear the edge of the door opening, as indicated by the dotted positions shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In this connection, it will be noted that the outer flange ll of the channel 20 is wider than the inner flange 21 thereof to thereby afford protection for the jamb sections when the latter are in open or inoperative position.
By referring to Figs. 2, 5 and 6, it will be noted that the outer car door a2 is adapted to abut the door post 13 when in closed position, in the usual manner, and to be locked in such position by a hasp 43 and staple 4-1, lead seal 4C5 being employed to prevent unwarranted or malicious opening of the door. By referring to Figs. 5 and 6, it will be seen that the bolts 30 and 31, when in operative position, are substantially concealed and unexposed on the outer side of the door post 13 since the bolts are so designed as to length that their outer ends will be either flush with or within the outer face of the housing Hence, the bolts 30 and 31 cannot, in actual practice when grain is pressing against the doors, be released or operated except from their inner ends and when the outer car door 42 is closed and sealed, it is apparent that tampering with the bolts is prevented without opening the car door 42.
Inasmuch as the grain door seal will not be employed during a greater portion of the 7 year, it is desirable to provide simple means for holding the amb sections in open or inoperative position and for this purpose, I have provided a bolt 46 slidably mounted on the under face of the lintel and adapted to engage and hold the upper jamb section 23 in such position. As appears in Fig. 8, the lower jamb section 22 has an upwardly extending finger 47 secured thereto and which overlaps the upper section 23 so that when the latter is held in open position, the lower section 22 will also be prevented from swing-- ing inwardly.
Referring now to Figs. 10 and 11, the locking arrangement there shown comprises a housing casting 128 within which is slidably mounted upper and lower locking bolts 130 and 131 beveled in the same manner as the bolts 30 and 31. The bolts 130 and 131 are also provided with elongated slots 135 135 through which extends a retaining rivet 184. To hold the bolts in operative position, the same are provided with suitable perforations 136136 adapted to aline with corresponding perforations 137137 in the upper and lower walls of the housing casting and through all of which perforations is adapted to be extended a detachable pin 138.
As illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 10, the slidable bolt 130 may be provided with a lug 160 which limits the inward movement of the bolt, the bolt being limited in its opening movement by a lug 161 on the housing. When this construction is used, it is unnecessary to employ the bolt and slot arrangement 134 and 135. In the construction shown in Fig. 12, I have shown a sealing arrangement applied to a wooden post and a different type of locking device. In said figure, 213 represents the post, the same being provided with a longitudinally extending concave recess 214 in which is seated the bulb end 215 of the swinging door j amb 222. To hold the door jamb in operative position, a latch 223 is provided, the same being pivoted about a horizontal pivot pin 224 mounted in a bracket 225, the latter being suitably counter-sunk into the wooden post. The latch, when in the position shown in Fig. 12, engages a shoulder or enlargement 226 formed on the door jamb to thereby hold the latter in operative position. When it is desired to open the door jamb, the latch 223 is swung upwardly, which permits the door jamb to be swung against the face of the door post. It will be noted that this locking arrangement will be concealed and inaccessible when the outer door of the car is closed, as above described for the other constructions.
It is believed that the method of applying I lower jamb section 22 and the lower door section 18 are preferably made of such a height as will be used when the car is car rying'the heavier grains, such as wheat and when the upper section of the grain door is not required.
The construction embodied in this application is in the nature of an improvement on that shown in my earlier application No. 856,106, filed August 10, 1914.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred means of carrying out my invention, but it will be understood by those skilled in the art that'various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrange ment of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a construction of the character described, the combination with the side wall of a car having a door opening therein, of metal door posts disposed on the outer side of said car wall at each side of the opening, One of said posts being extended over the adjacent vertical edge of the wall to thereby form a grain seal bearing for one edge of a removable grain door, the other door post being located a short distance from the adjacent vertical edge of the wall to form a corner therewith on the outer side, a jamb pivotally mounted to swing about a vertical axis in said corner and adapted to extend over the adjacent vertical edge of the wall in its operative position to retain the opposite edge of said grain door, and means for holding said jamb in said operative position.
2. In a construction of the character described, the combination with a side wall of a car having a door opening therein, of a metal door post on the outer side of the wall and located a short distance from the adjacent vertical edge of the car wall, said post having a flange secured to the car wall and another flange extending vertically outwardly therefrom, a jamb pivotally mounted about a vertical axis in the corner between said edge of the wall and the outwardly extending flange of the post, a vertically extending channel-shaped member secured to said outwardly extended flange of the post on the side nearest the door opening, the inner flange of said channel-shaped member forming a substantially continuous bearing for said j amb and being of lesser Width than the outer flange of said channel shaped member so that the last named flange forms a shield for said jamb When it is in inoperative position, said jamb being comprised of a pair of independently movable sections, means at the opposite side of the door opening to retain one edge of a removable grain. door, a pair of horizontally slidable bolts adapted to engage the sections of said jamb adjacent their meeting edges and hold said sections inv operative position, and means for housing said bolts including, a casting secured to said post on the side farthest away from the door opening, a part of said housing means being formed by portions of said post and said bolts being slidable horizontally through the post.
