Application filed October 13, 1916.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JULIUs CHEIN, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, and resident 0f Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rIoy Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toy locomotives and the obj ect of my invention is to provide a useful and instructive toy locomotive of simple and cheap construen tion.
I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view of the device assembled.
Fig. 2 is a view of the blank forming the base of the device. y
Fig. 3 is a view of the blank forming the cab and boiler and Fig. 4 is a view of the blank forming the sides of the tender.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
For the purpose of obtaining great economy in construction, I forni my device of a minimum number of parts which are preferably stamped out of sheet metal and the entire device with the exception of the wheels is formed from three sheet metal blanks.
'Ihe blank forming the base of the device shown in Fig. 2 comprises a sheet of metal 1 onthe longitudinal marginal sides of which are stamped out two counterpart representations of the frame 2, 2; the driving rods 3, 3; piston box 4, 4 and like parts usual in the ordinary type of( steam locomotive withA seats 5, 5, 5, 5 for the axles 6, 6 carrying the wheels 7, 7 and at one end section of the blank 1 are formed two counterpart representations of the frame 8, 8 of the tender 9. At the front end section of the said blank 1, I form a representation of the fender 10 carrying two counterpart ears 11, 11 to form the heads of the piston boxes 4, 4.
The blank forming the cab and boiler comprises a sheet of metal 12 substantially equilateral in which I form a slit 13 constituting the dividing line between the cab section and boiler section and two substantially H shaped cut out sections 14 and 15 which form the representations of the smoke stack 16 and sandbox 17. In the cab section 18, I

provide cut out representations of windows 19, 19.
rlhe blank constituting the sides of the tender illustrated in Fig. 4 comprises three sections. The two end sections 2() and 21 forming the sides and the central section 22 forming the back of the tender when assembled as hereinafter described.
rlhe blank 1 forming thc base of the device being cut out as above described, is folded down on the lines L and Z) so that the portion of the blank outside those lines will lie at right angles to the portion between those lines and the piston box sections 4 are stamped out in half cylindrical form to constitute representations of the piston box. A section anterior the piston box 4 may be stamped and bent over on each side to form a representation of a piston rod. The front end section 10 of the blank 1 is folded down on the line c to form a fender, the corners 101, 101 being preferably depressed below the apex to add realism to the representation of the fender or cowcatcher, and the ears 11, 11 being set vertically to form the piston boxes. A circular section 24 adjacent the line c' is cut out and bent up into a vertical position to form the head of the boiler. Intermediate the forward or engine section and the rear or tender section, I fold the blank down on the line CZ and back on the line e to provide a step between the tender section and engine section.
The cab and boiler section shown in Fig. 3 is folded on the line 7 and out on the lines g and h whereby the ears 14, 14 and 15, 15 will assume a substantially vertical position and are flared to form representations of the stack 16 and sand box 17 respectively. The blank 12 is then folded on the lines t' and 70 and the portions of the blank 12 between the lines g and z' and the lines h and 7c is bent into cylindrical form to constitute the boiler section 25. rlhe blank 12 is also folded on the lines Z and m so that the downwardly bent sections outside those lines will form the sides 26 and 27 of the cab and the portion between those lines will form the roof 28 of the cab. The cab and boiler section thus formed is set on the base blank 1 with the front of the boiler section 25 against the head 24 and bound thereto by bending ovei| the lugs 251, 251 in the cut out seats 241, 241. The marginal edge section 242 may also be bent over upon the boiler section 25 for the and finish, if desired.
purpose of providing a neat finish. The marginal strips of the boiler section lying outside the lines z' and 7c are laid on the base section 1 and may be bound thereto by bending over the cut out lugs 29 and 30 in the cut out seats 31 and 32 respectively and by bending over the cut out lugs 33 and 341 in the seats 35 and 36 respectively. A section 37 is cut out and bent up on the line a into the cab section and the marginal edge section thereof is preferably bent over into a horizontal position therein on the line 0. The lugs 38, 39 may be bent over through the windows 19 respectively for the purpose of binding the parts more firmly in position. The marginal sections @l0 and 411 may be bent downward against the sides of the base section l for additional strength The tender is formed by bending over. the blank shown in Fig. il on the lines j) and g thereby forming the side and rear walls and bending the lower marginal edge section outwardly at right angles on the line 1 which is then set on the base section and bound thereon by the ears 42, 4t2. lThe upper longitudinal marginal section and the end sections may be folded inwardly on the lines t u and o to provide additional strength and finish if desired.
The blanks being thus assembled, wheels 7 and 7 may be provided as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A blank for the base section of a toy locomotive having marginal side sections cut out in a representation of the driving mechanism of a locomotive and adapted to be bent downwardly at right angles to the central Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the portion and having one end section cut out to represent a fender and a cut out marginal section to represent the frame of a tender substantially as shown and described.
2. A blank for a toy locomotive having cut out portions forming representations of a stack and sand box respectively and adapted to be folded at its medial line to cause said stack and sand box to project above the adjacent parts and side sections adapted to be bent over to form the representation of a boiler and an integral section adapted to be folded to represent a cab substantially as shown and described.
3. In a toy locomotive the combination of a base section and a body section, the base section comprising an integral blank having side portions cnt out in the representation of the driving mechanism of a locomotive and bent downwardly at right angles to the central portion thereof and having one end section cut out to form the representation of a fender and the body section comprising an integral blank having cut ont portions representing the stack and sand box of a locomotive and adapted to be bent at its medial line to cause the said stack and .sand box portions to project above the adjacent parts and the side portions thereof adapted to be bent over to form the representation of a boiler and an integral section bent to forni the representation of a cab substantially as shown and described.
Signed this 2nd day of October A. D. 1916.
