ANDREW W. ROTH, OF RIVER AUX VASES, MISSOURI.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-ed liIay 11, 1915.
Application filed April 15, 1914. Serial No. 832,100.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Aux Vases, in the county of Ste. Genevieve and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stove, and the principal object of the invention is to provide an improved device for collecting smoke and steam arising from the stove and conveying the same into the fire box, thus preventing the smoke and steam from circulating in the room.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the attachment that it maybe extended and to provide means for limiting the outward movement of the extensible portion of the attachment.
Another object of the invention is to so construct that portion of the attachment leading to the fire box that it will take up a small amount of space, and not be cumbersome or in the way.
Another object of the invention is to so construct that portion of the attachment which is mounted in the fire box that the passage of air through the attachment may be controlled.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a stove provided with the improved attachment; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the stove with the improved attachment; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through a stove provided with the improved attachment; Fig. 4. is a sectional view taken along the line 4.4E of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken along the line 66 of Fig. 3.
The stove 10 is provided with the back 11, oven 12, firebox 13, and ash pit 14:. The back 11 of the StOX'G is provided with openings 15 which communicate with a housing or chamber 16 secured to the back of the stove beneath the shelf 17 upon which dishes may be placed to be heated. This chamber, or housing 16', is supported by brackets 18 and is provided with an opening or passage way 19 so that the usual draft pipe 20 may pass through the chamber 16. Openings 21 are formed in the bottom of the chamber 16 so that steam and smoke may be sucked into the chamber and thus prevented from circulating through the room.
In order to permit steam and smoke arising from the front of the stove to be collected, there has been provided a draw 22 which is slidably mounted in the housing 16 and is provided with a cut-out portion 23 to receive the smoke pipe 20 when the draw is moved inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 6. The supporting strips or webs 24 are provided to support the central portion of the draw and prevent the upper wall of the draw from sinking downwardly toward the bottom of the housing 16. It is only desired to have this draw 22 moved outwardly as far as shown in Fig. 3, and therefore catches 25 are provided to engage abutments 26 positioned in the housing 16. There is therefore no danger of the draw being pulled entirely out of the housing when grasped by the handles 27.
A housing 28 is secured to the rear face of the back 11 and incloses that portion of the back provided with the openings 15 to receive the smoke and steam collected by the chamber 16 and draw 22. This housing 28 is provided with outlet pipes 29 and 30 which are connected adjacent their lower ends, as shown in Fig. 2, and are supported by the bracket 31. This pipe 30 communi-,
cates with a pipe or arm 32 and extends into the ash pit 14 beneath the grate 33 of the fire box 13, and it will thus be seen that the smoke and steam which pass into housing 28 will pass downwardly and into the arm 32 leading into the ash pit. A closure 34 which is controlled by a rod 35 is provided for the pipe 32 so that the draft through the pipe 32 may be regulated.
When this stove is in use, the ash pit door will be closed and the door 3 1 opened a sufficient amount to cause the proper draft through the smoke and steam collecting attachment. The draft for the fire box 13 will therefore be through the chamber 16 into the housing 28 and through the pipes 29 and 30 into the pipe 32 and from this pipe 32 up through the grate 33. Therefore, the smoke and steam from the article cooking upon the stove will be collected and will be conveyed to the ash pit and up into the fire. The steam and smoke will not, therefore circulate in the room. If articles are only being cooked upon the back of the stove, it is not necessary to have the draw 22 extended as shown in Fig. 3, and therefore, the draw can be moved to the position cles on the front portion of the stove will be collected.
I have thus provided a stove attachment which is very compact in form, and which is so constructed that it may be adjusted to extend either partially or fully across the top of the stove, andwhich is so constructed that'the draw can not be drawn outwardly beyond a desired amount.
What is claimed is:
A stove provided with a fire box and with Copies of this patent may be obtained for an ash pit beneath said fire box, a back for said stove a housing carried by said back, a conduit leading from said housing, an arm leading from said conduit into said ash pit and extending through the same for a relatively great extent, a closure for the inner end of said arm adjustably connected with the arm and means for releasably holding said closure in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
