SCRAPER.
i ,maria Application led October 27, 1915.
0 all 'ii/710m t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW F. Hoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durango, in the county of La Plata and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to certain improvements in road scrapers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character of a novel and improved structure whereby the road may be gradually dug to any required depth and whereby bumps or high portions of the road and sides may be removed without disturbing the main road bed.
lt is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having its working face concaved to pre vent the device from tipping over when being drawn over the road and to further permit the device, when desired, to be tipped over on its back and be supported by runners arranged on the back especially when traveling over street corners, cut roads, bridges, culverts and the like.
lt is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby it will effectively dig gravel and bowlders without having to loosen the same with a pick or bar.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view in top plan of a road scraper constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with one of the hitching eyes shown in fragment; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section and partly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au Serial No. 58,177.
in elevation, illustrating a slightly modified form of invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, l denotes the body of my improved scraper substantially oval in plan and concaved in cross section, the curvature of the body serving to prevent the same tipping over when operatively engaged with a road surface and further facilitating the body being turned over upon its back so that the parallel runners 2 carried thereby and disposed longitudinally of the body may be employed for drawing the device over good roads, bridges or the like and when it is not intended that the scraper should have working action upon the surface.
The opposite ends of the body l at the transverse center thereof are provided withv the rigid straps 3 projecting therebeyond and to which the eyes 4 are swiveled, said eyes serving as a hitch, so that the body l may be readily drawn, preferably by draft animals.
Disposed longitudinally of the body l at its transverse center and adjacent its longitudinal margins, are the shoulders 5 having their outer faces flat and said shoulders are intersected by the openings 6 disposed through the body and in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof. The openings G are adapted to have disposed therethrough the Shanks 7 of the teeth 8 preferably pyramidal in form and arranged longitudinally and transversely of the body l so that the requisite cutting action may be had upon the road surface. lt is also to be observed that the intermediate row of teeth S are of a length as to cause their free or pointed extremities to be substantially flush with the free or pointed extremities of the side teeth. The Shanks 7 of the teeth extend beyond the rear face of the body l and have threaded thereon the nuts or burs 9, whereby the teeth are effectively clamped in applied position, yet may be removed with convenience and facility. It is also to be observed that the runners 2 are of such a height as to eliminate any danger of the nuts or burs 9 contacting with the surface over which the body l is drawn when supported by the runners 2. It is also to be noted that intermediate the openings 6 are arranged the bores or smaller openings 10, as disclosed in detail in Fig. 3. These openings are adapted to have disposed therethrough the spaced Shanks l1 carried by a substantially V-shaped tooth l2 Which latter form of tooth is intended for use in connection With light or shallou7 Work.
The device as herein embodied is adapted to be produced of metal, such as iron or steel and affords a compact mass of great Weight and the runners 2 are integrally formed therewith. It is preferred that the teeth 8 bemade of mild steel and be pointed with tool steel.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a scraper constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be assembled, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described this invention, What I claim is A device of the character described coinprising an elongated body curved in cross section and provided on its opposite faces with the longitudinally disposed shoulders, the outer faces of .which are fiat, said body being provided with openings intersecting the shoulders, teeth coacting with the concave surface of the body and provided With Shanks disposed through the openings of the body, and clamping means engageable With the Shanks and contacting with the shoulders formed on the convex surface of the body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
