Description

Patented Mar. 9, 1926.lv
UNITED STATES DEVILLO DFKINNEY, 0F SEEING-FIELD, ILLINOIS.
ROAD DRAG'.
Application med october a1, 1924. serial No. 744,967.
To all 107mm it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DEvrLLol D; KINNnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Drags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to road drags and its principal object is to provide a harrow unit for association with the drag.
A further object of the invention is to pro'- vide a device of this character embodying a bar, a plurality of harrow teeth associated therewith and a novel connection between each of the harrow teeth and bar.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved road drag of the above character, which will be durable and eliicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustratedv in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvedroad drag,
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the drag illustrating the novel means of securing the road cutting teeth and road scraping blade in position,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the front bar of the road drag showing one of the novel road cutting teeth in position thereon, the tooth being shown in horizontal section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the letter A generally indicates the improved. road drag, which comprises a novel frame B to which are attached the vnovel road cutting teeth C and the novel road scraping blade and leveler D.
The frame B comprises a front bar 5 which is preferably formed of angle iron with one of its flanges disposed in a horizontal plane and its other flange disposed in a vertical plane facing the front part of the drag. This front bar 5 has bolted or otherwise secured thereto as at 6 rearwardly eX- tending reach bars 7 ,.8 and 9. The rear terminals ofthese lreach bars 7, 8` and 9 are provided with diverging arms 10 all of which A terminate substantially in the same plane. The arms 10 of the- reach bars 7, 8 and 9 form means for permitting the road scraping blade and leveler D to be rigidly secured in place. p Y.
The novel road digging and cutting teeth C can also be formed of angle iron if so desired and each tooth comprises an elongated vertically disposed body 15 including angular related side plates 16, which are connected together at v their forward ends to form a cutting edge 17. The eXtreme lower end of the body 15 is provided with a sharpened point 18 for digging into the roadway. In order to rigidly hold each tooth in position I provide a clamp 19 which is adapted to encircle the bar 5 and ther tooth. The clamp 19 is of the split loop type and the terminals thereof are connected together by a bolt 2O which extendsv through ears 22 formed on the said terminals of the clamp. As clearly shown the clamp is provided with an upper arm 23 which lies flat on the upper face of the bar 5 and angular related arms 24 and 25 which are adapted to engage the side plates 16 of the tooth and upwardly and downwardly extending arms 27 and 26, the terminals of which carry the ears 22.
l The teeth C are arranged at predetermined spaced points on the bar 5 with their sharpened edges 17 foremost as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. While I have shown one means of connectingY then teeth in position, it is to be understood that the teeth can be held in place in any other desired or preferred way.
The improved road scraping blade and leveler D embodies the depending blade portion 28 havingits lower portion provided with the cutting edge 29. The upper edge of the blade portion proper 28 is provided with the right angularly disposed forwardly directed attaching flange 30 to which is bolted the arm 10 of the reach bars 7 8 and 9.
It is preferred to arrange the scraping blade and leveler D at an angle to the transverse axis of the road drag in order that loose stone, dirt and the like shall gradually work their way to one side of the roadway, as the drag is pulled along the road surface.
Any preferred means can be employed for pulling the drag over the road surface and as shown the vertical flange of the bar 5 has connected thereto eyes 3l which receive the inner ends or a pull chain 32. Suitable draft animals oanbe attached to this chain 32 if so desired.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided an exceptionally simple and durable road drag, which Will effectively accomplish the purpose intended, it being understood that the teeth C are intended to Work up the road surface, While the blade D is intended to straighten and level the road surface and leave the road in a good level condition.
Changes as to details may be made Without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but
What I vclaim as new is The combination With an angle-bar and a V-shapved in cross section tooth, of a clamp provided with a lil-shaped portion adapted to embrace and conform to the tooth, upwardly and downwardly extending arms formed with the clamp and embracing the angle-bar, and a fastening retaining the eX- tremities of the arms together.
In testimony whereof I alii); my signature.
DEVILLO D. KINNEY.
