Description

W. F. KOCH.
DETACHABLE RAKE TOOTH POINT.
APPLICATION map FEB. 9. 1915.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
WILLIAM F. KOCH, OF HILLSIDE, COLORADO.
DETACHABLE RAKE-TOOTH POINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 9, 1915. Serial No. 7,064.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM F. KooH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillside, in the county of Custer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Rake- Tooth Points, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to detachable points for the teeth of hay sweeps or the like, and has for its primary object to provide an attachment which will greatly increase the efficiency of sweeps or rakes when being used on rough or uneven soil.
Another object is to provide a detachable point of this character so shaped, that should the point he forced into engagement with the soil, the action of the same will be to force its way out instead of into the soil, as has been a common occurrence heretofore.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consist in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the detachable point;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the device in its operative position, as when in use on a hay sweep tooth.
The detachable point herein shown is adapted to be placed upon the ends of the teeth of hay sweeps or the like, when 00- casion requires, and is adapted to be detachably secured thereto in order that the same may be removed when it is desired to use the sweep in its simpler form.
The point comprises a shoe, runner or body portion 1, formed of sheet metal and which is transversely curved throughout its length, in plan, the same being tapered to a point as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The lower pointed end of the body portion is curved from the point thereof to a point intermediate its ends, as shown at 2.
A. flat strip 3 of sheet metal is secured to the inner wall of the body portion 1, adjacent the pointed end thereof and extends in spaced parallel relation with the body portion 1 to a point adjacent the upper end of the said body portion.
Transversely curved plates 1 and 5 are secured to the outer marginal edges of the body portion 1 and at their inner edges are secured to the strip 3, these plates terminating at a point intermediate the ends of the body portion 1 and the strip 8.
By providing the brace members 4 and 5 as described, it will be seen that should the point he forced into engagement withthe soil, plates t and 5 will act in the capacity of mold boards to part. the soil and facilitate the passage of the point therethrough. It will be further seen that because of the substantially triangular shape of the lower portion of the point, a cutting edge is provided whereby the cutting action thereof will be greatly increased.
By providing the body portion 1 with the curved portion 2, it will be apparent that should the point he forced into the ground, the action of the curved portion will be to force the point upwardly and consequently out of engagement therewith.
In order to provide a means to prevent accidental disengagement of the points from the teeth of the sweep or the like, the upper portion of the body portion 1 may be provided with an opening 6 for receiving a tying element such as a chain or the like.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be clearly understood and while I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention I do not Wish to be limited thereto, except for such limitations, as the claims may import.
What is claimed is 1. A rake tooth point comprising a body portion formed of sheet metal, tapered to a point at one end and said tapered portion being curved to form an arcuate ground engaging face, soil plates each having one of their longitudinal edges fixed to said body portion to extend longitudinally with respect thereto, said soil plates being concaved longitudinally, and a strip to connect the other longitudinal edges of said soil plates so as to provide a cutting edge, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a point for a hay sweep tooth, a device comprising a body portion formed of sheet metal and tapered toward one end to form a point, said body portion having its pointed end bent upwardly in the are Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
of a circle to provide arcuate ground-engaging plates when said tooth point is in its normal working position on =ahay-sweep,'
: sweep, I a longitudinally and laterally. curved shoe :or runner aflatstrip of a length substantially equal-:to the length of said shoe and extending longitudinally thereof and being inspaced'rel-ation thereto at the rear end; and juxtaposed to said shoe at its front end, and soil-displacing plates each having one .of .-its longitudinal edges secured (to a lateral edge of said shoe and :having its other longitudinal edge secured to one of the major surfaces. of: said strip.
4. I11 a detachable tooth point for a hay sweep having teeth of ordinary construction,--alongitudinally and laterally curved shoe or runner, a flat strip of a length substantially'equalto the length of said shoe and extending longitudinally thereof and "being-in spaced relation thereto'at'the rear endandjuxtaposedthereto at its front end, and soil-displacing plates each having one of its longitudinal edges secured to. a lateral edge ofsaid shoe and'having itsotherlongitudinal edge secured toone of the major surfaces of said strip, said-tooth point-being designedfor connection with means for securing said tooth 'pointzinposition on said tooth without .niodification of the latter.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa turein presence of. two .witnesses.
