To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Momns ROSENWASSER, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in leggings, and one of the objects thereof is to produce a legging of improved construction as to the fastening devices employed,

.whereby the application of the same to the leg is facilitated, a neater fit and appearance made possible, and at the same time ultimate fastening made at a single point.

Another object is to provide in a legging a single fastening device running from end to end of the legging, but which acts to keep the edges of the legging in overlapped relation and without buckling or bulging.

A further object is to provide a fastening means of the character described which shall be substantially invisible when the legging is in place.

Other objects and aims of the invention, and the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically adverted to in the course of the following description.

The invention accordingly consists of the elements, combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and the scope of the application there of will be succinctly defined in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part of this specification, and in which I have illustrated merely preferred forms of embodiment of the invention; Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved legging as in place; Fig. 2 is a detail section showing the relation of the lower parts of the two flaps, and the fixed point of attachment of the fastening device; Fig. 3 is a detail, partly broken away, of the upper end of the outside flap, showing the inclined relation of the opening through which the fastening strap passes; Fig. I is a detail section of a part of the outer flap, showing the double construction thereof at its outer edge, the interposed stiffening member, and the loop for the fastening strap.

Referring to the numerals of the drawings, 1 indicates a legging of any preferred material adapted to be placed about the leg,

9 indicates an opening in the upper end of the outer flap, defined as by means of an elongated eyelet member 10, which is disposed so that it angles downwardly away from the edge of the outer flap. The reason for this arrangement of the eyelet is in order that the strap may be passed through the same, and require but slight twisting to enable its free end to be brought to the position shown in Fig. 1, which is substantially at right angles to that portion of the length of the strap between the loop 8 and the eyelet 10. The free end of the strap is fastened to the upper end of the inner flap as by an ordinary buckle.

Inasmuch as in the use of the device the strain of the strap is exercised substantially at the ends of the outer flap, there might be a tendency for the outer flap. to buckle or bulge out. This tendency may be overcome by positioning a finger 11, or the like, at an intermediate point in the length of the outer flap, which will engage the strap and hold the flap close to the strap. As shown clearlyin Fig. 4, I prefer to provide a stiffening piece 12, interposed between the outer flap and the reinforcing member 6, and which extends substantially throughout the length of the outer fiap. For the sake of adding 1 to the 'shapeliness of the legging, and in order to make room for the thickness of the strap and keep the same from pressing upon the leg, it is preferred to make the stiffening .member transversely bowed as in Fig. 4:-

This bowing also stifiens the member 4 and makes possible the use of relatively light material. In applyingv the legging the end of the strap may be left to'pass through the loop 8, so as to hold the flaps of the legging in some measure together. The legging is then drawn over the foot and around the leg, and by a single upward movement of the strap end the lower parts of the flaps are secured together. The free end of the strap is then passed through the eyelet 10 to the outside of the outer flap, and drawn as tightly as may be required in the buckle.

It will be observed that the fastening member is entirely out of sight except at the upper end of the legging, and that the desirable advantages aimed at are secured through the medium of a very simple and comparatively inexpensive construction.

The pull of the strap upon its point of attachment to the inner flap, being directly resisted by the eyelet 10 in the outer flap, it is apparent that there will be a relative downward movement of the outer flap, and that the loop 8 will thus be caused to slide along the strap directly toward the point of attachment of said strap to the inner flap, and thus cause the opposing lapping surfaces of the two flaps to be forced into closer contact.

It is believed that the use of the legging is suliiciently clear from the detailed description of parts set out above, and further explanation thereof is accordingly omitted.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination in a legging having overlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said flaps attached by its lower end to the inner flap at a point covered and concealed by the outer flap, and extending straight from said point of attaching entirely between and concealed by said flaps, through fastening means on the inner surface of the outer flap adjacent said point of attachment, and to a point adjacent the upper ends of said flaps, and extending thence through the outer flap across the outer surface thereof, and into adjustable engagement with the inner flap.

2. The combination in a legging having overlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said flaps attached by its lower end to the inner flap at a point covered and concealed by the outer flap, and extending straight from said point of attaching entirely between and concealed by said flaps, through fastening means on the inner surface of the outer flap adjacent said point of attachment, and to a point adjacent the upper ends of said flaps, and extending thence through the outer flap across the outer surface thereof, and into adjustable engagement with the inner flap, the intermediate concealed portion of the fastening strap being under tension and having a bent to bow the outer flap, and means fixed to the intermediate portion of said outer flap detachably engaging the intermediate concealed tensioned portion of said fastening strap, adapted for preventing such bowing.

3. The combination in a logging having overlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said flaps attached by its lower end to the inner flap at a point covered and concealed by the outer flap, and extending straight from said point of attaching entirely between and concealed by said flaps, and to a point adjacent the upper ends of said flaps, and extending thence through the outer flap across the outer surface thereof, and into adjustable engagement with the inner flap, said outer flap having a loop formed on its inner surface arranged in close proximity to the point of attachment of said strap to the inner fiap, and said fastening strap being threaded through said loop as it leaves said point of attachment, so as to hold the outer flap close against the outer surface of the inner flap.

l. The combination 'in a legging having ov rlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said flaps attached by its lower end to the inner flap at a point covered and concealed by the outer flap, and extending straight from said point of attaching entirely between and concealed by said flaps, and to a point adjacent the upper ends of said flaps, and extending thence through the outer flap across the outer surface thereof, and into adjustable engagement with the inner flap, said outer flap having a loop formed on its inner surface arranged in close proximity to the point of attachment of said strap to the inner flap, said fastening strap being threaded through said loop as it leaves said point of attachment, so as to hold the outer flap close against the outer surface of the inner flap,

the intermediate concealed portion of the fastening strap being under tension and having a bent to bow the outer flap, and a longitudinally disposed reinforcing member extending between the ends of said outer flap concealed within the material thereof and adapted to prevent such bowing.

5. The combination, in a legging having longitudinally extending juxtaposed edge portions movable longitudinally relatively to each other, of a fastening strap having an engagement with a relatively lower portion of one of said edge portions and having an engagement with a relatively upper portion of the other of said edge portions, the intermediate portion of said fastening strap being substantially straight, the en gagement with one of said edge portions being fixed, and the engagement with the other of said edge portions being adjustable to alter the length of the straight portion of the fastening strap for moving said edge portions longitudinally relatively to each other, and said fastening strap having a part adjacent its point of attachment to one of said edge portions slidably engaging an eye formed in the other edge portion.

6. The combination, in a legging having overlapping longitudinally extending flaps movable longitudinally relatively to each other, of a fastening strap having an engagement with a relatively lower portion of the inner flap, and having an engagement with a relatively upper portion of the outer flap, the intermediate portion of said fastening strap being substantially straight, the engagement with the inner flap being fixed, and the engagement with the outer flap being adjustable to alter the length of the straight portion of the fastening member for moving said flaps longitudinally relatively to each other, said fastening strap having a part adjacent its point of attachment to the inner flap slidably engaging an eye formed in the outer flap.

7. The combination in a legging having overlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said flaps fixedly engaged by one of its ends to one of said flaps at a point adjacent one end of the legging, said strap extending straight from said point of engagement into engagement with the other flap at a point adjacent the other end of the legging, means for tensioning said strap to move said flaps longitudinally relatively to each other, meansfor resisting longitudinal relative movement between said flaps whereby the tensioning means will exert a tendency to buckle one of said flaps, and a reinforcing member carried by said last mentioned flap extending longitudinally thereof for preventing such buckling.

8. The combination in a legging having overlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said [laps fixedly engaged by one of its ends to one of the flaps at a point adjacent one end of the legging, said strap extending substantially straight from said point of engagement into engagement with the other flap at a point adjacent the other end of the legging, at least one end and the whole intermediate portion of said strap being entirely between and concealed by said flaps, and means on one of said iiaps engaging the strap intermediate its mentioned points of engagement with said flaps for retaining said flaps in close lapping relation.

9. The combination in a legging having overlapping, longitudinally extending flaps, of a fastening strap for said flaps fixedly engaged by one of its ends to one of the flaps at a point adjacent one end of the legging, said strap extending substantially straight from said point of engagement into engagement with the other flap at a point adjacent the other end of the legging,-n1eans for tensioning said strap to move said flaps longitudinally relatively to each other, a loop formed upon one of the flaps adjacent the point of engagement of the strap with the other flap, and the intermediate portion of said strap being threaded through said loop to retain the adjacent portions of the flaps in close lapping relation.
