Be it known that I, KATHERINE TOJETTI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Eastening' Devices, of which the following' is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in spring'fastening devices; and it consists in the novelstructure and features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The fastening' device of my invention is formed from a strip of spring-steel folded to create a rear member and a front member, the latter at its outer or free end being' turned or folded inwardly and then toward the said rear member, whereby there is formed a spring fastening device in one integral piece of metal capable when applied upon a piece of material of firmly attaching itself thereto. I provide as a part of the fastening a ring connected with the front member of the device to receive the end of a key-chain or watch-chain or other article requiring to be held.

The object of the invention is to provide a very simple and efiicient spring fastening device capable of varied uses and which may be conveniently applied edgewise upon one or more thicknesses of material and which, due to its peculiarity of construction, will normally resist any tendency to move or be moved from said material except upon the application of pressure applied between the two members of the device and in a direction to open said members from each other.

The fastening device of my invention might be conveniently employed as a means for binding' the waistbands of trousers and drawers together and for receiving the end of a watchchain, key-chain, or other article requiring to be held, and this use of my invention is the one I illustrate in the accompanying' drawings, from which, in connection with the detailed description hereinafter presented, the invention will be fully understood.

Referring to the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is an edge view, partly in section, of a fastening' device constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention, the said device being illustrated as securing together the waistbands of a pair of trousers and a pair of drawers, such trousers and drawers being in section on the dotted line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a detached rear elevation of same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of same on the dotted line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of same on the dotted line 5 5 of Eig. 4.

In the drawing', 11 designates the fastening device as a whole, said device comprising a rear member 12 and a front member 14, the latter having at its free end the inwardlyturned member 15, whose free end is deflected toward the said rear member 12, the extremity of said member 15 forming a reasonably sharp binding edge 16 to engage the fabric which may be inserted between said front and rear members, this fabric in the present instance being represented by the trousers 20, the latter and the drawers 21 being shown as held together by means of the said fastening device.

The fastening deviceI 11 is formed of one integ'ral piece of spring-steel folded at about its middle portion to form the said members 12 14, the free end portion of the member 14 being then turned inwardly to create the member 15 and leaving the rear member 12 extended beyond the completed front member 14. The fastening is provided with an eye 22, which is made from a rod of Wire Whose end portions are twisted together and fashioned into the loop 23, which is held in a pocket 24, formed at the juncture of the members 14 15, as shown, said pocket being suliciently closed to prevent the loop 23 from sliding therefrom. The eye 22 is particularly useful in receiving the end of a watch-chain or keychain, especially when the fastening is used for holding together the bands of trousers and drawers.

The manner of using the fastening is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which it will be seen that the bands of the trousers and drawers are brought together and that the fastening is then pressed downwardly over the edges of the same, the rear member 12 extending downwardly along the inner surface of the drawersband and the front member 14 passing' down- IOO wardly along the front surface ofthe trousersband, while the edge 16 of the member 15 presses inwardly against the latter band. The thickness of the material between the members 12 and 15 creates a strong spring tension in the device and causes the members thereof to firmly bind against said material, and it is an important feature of the device that the member 15 extends toward the closed end thereof and then turns toward the member 12, since by reason thereof said member 15 by biting into the fabric resists any direct upward movement of the device from said fabric. The device may, however, be conveniently removed by pressing the end of the finger upwardly below the lower end of the member 12 with sufficient firmness to bend said member outwardly and relieve the member 15 from its firm engagement with the fabric. The members 15 12 press against opposite sides of the fabric, and the member 12 is longitudinally corrugated, as at 25, to stifen and strengthen said member and form elevations to engage the fabric and receive the pressure exerted against said fabric by the edge 16 of the member 15, the fastening' being more eflicient for'use on trousers-bands or like cushioning material when said corrugations 25 are provided.

The fastening device hereinbefore described may also be used as a scarf-holder, and there are other similar uses to which it may be put.

What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The spring fasteningdevice formed from an integral strip of spring metal and comprising the opposite members 12, 14, the member 12 having the longitudinal corrugations 25, and the member 14 having at its free end the inwardlyfolded member 15 whose free end 'is deiiected toward said member 12 and affords a binding edge 16; substantially as shown and described.

2. The spring fastening device formed from an integral strip of spring metal and comprising the opposite members 12, 14, the member 14 having at its free end the inwardly-folded member 15 whose free end is deiected toward said member 12 and affords a binding' edge 16, combined with an eye carried by said device; substantially as set forth.

3. The spring fastening device formed from an integral strip of spring metal and comprising the opposite members 12, 14, the member 14 having at its free end the inwardly-folded member 15 whose free end is deliected toward said member 12 and affords a binding edge 16, combined with the eye formed of a piece of wire and having a loop connected with said device at the juncture of said members 14, 15; substantially as set forth.

4. The spring fastening device formed from an integral strip of spring metal and comprising the opposite members 12, 14, the member 14 having at its free end the inwardly-folded member 15 whose free end is deiiected toward said member 12 and affords a binding edge 16, combined with the eye formed of a piece of wire and having a loop connected with said device at the juncture of said members 14, 15, and said member 12 having the corrugations 25; substantially as set forth.
