Description

A. E. PUEGHSEL.
GARTER.
No. 323,866. Patented Aug. 4,1885 "8%1. Fi .1
WITNESSES: INVENTOR W I Mew? E. 'Emuhmt WW BY ATTORNEYS PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. FUEOHSEL, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
GARTEPt.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,866, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed June 4, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. FUEoHsEL, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garters, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a garter which is composed of a web or tape folded upon itself at both ends to form two loops, a stockingsupporting clasp secured in one of said loops, and a spring-clamp secured in the other loop, for securing the garter in position and for adjusting the position of the stocking-supporting clasp. The ends of the tape are adjustably secured by ring provided with cross-bars.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the garter in its working position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same when stretched out. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a web or tape, preferably made of elastic material. The ends of this tape are folded in upon the body and secured in position so as to form two loops, at b, and in order to adjust the length of the garter I pass the ends and the body of the tape through rings a d, provided with cross-bars, as shown in Fig. 2. By moving these rings in or out the length of the loops is increased or decreased and the garter is shortened or lengthened. To the ends of the tape A are secured tips of metal or other suitable material, which protect said ends and at the same time form shoulders which abut against the cross-bars of the rings 0 d,
(No model.)
and prevent the ends of the tapes from slipping through these rings. (See Fig. 3.)
In the loop a is secured a clasp, B, which is intended for supporting the stocking, and in the loop b is secured a spring-clamp, G, which is intended to catch over that portion of the web between the ring 0 and the clasp B, and which serves to hold the garter in position and adjust said clasp in the proper position.
The clasp may be of any construction suitable for the purpose, and the spring-clamp O is made of elastic sheet metal, provided at one end with an eye to engage with the loop I), and having its other end bent over. as shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 1, said clamp is applied to the garter between the ring 0 and the clasp B, where said garter is double, so that the strain exerted by the stocking is not liable to stretch the tape or web beyond its limit of elasticity.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a garter consisting of the web or tape A, folded upon itself at each end to form two loops, a I), the stocking-supporting clasp B, securedin one of said loops, and the bent'spring-clamp (J, secured in the other 100p, and through which clamp-the web or tapepasses, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT E. FUEOHSEL.
