IMPROVEMENT IN RAIN-WATER CUT-(JFFS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,054, dated August 15, 187' 1.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD REIN, of Marietta, in the county of Vashington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvemement in Rain-Tater Out-Oii's; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention has for its object the production of a cheap and simple cut-off for rain-water spouts, `and consists in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter.

.In the drawing, Figure l represents an elevation, partially7 in section, of my improved device, and Fig. 2, a detached view of the guard and crank-arm.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.

A represents a box or case, which is provided with a common central receiving-pipe, c, and the two separate discharging pipes al a2. It has also a chamber, a3, located between the supply-pipe and the discharge-pipes, as shown. B represents a downwardly-projecting and inwardly-inclined 11a-nge, which serves to conduct the column of water toward the center of the chamber. O represents a guide-plate, formed of the similar divisions c c, which is rigidly attached to the shaft c', as shown. The guide-plate is so located in the chamber a3 that when partially revolved by the shaft one of its ends is caused to rest beneath the lange B. While in this position it will be observed that the openings of one of the discharge-pipes is closed, and the water is conducted by the guide-plate into the other. D represents a wire guard, provided with depressions for holding the crank-arm in position to discharge water into either pipe, as desired.

The operation is as follows: The receiving-pipe is suitably connected to the pipe leading' from the eaves, and one ofthe discharge-pipes is connected to a pipe leading to the cistern, and the other to any proper waste-pipe. Ordinarily itis designed to set the guide-plate in such position as to cause the waterto pass off into the wastepipe, in which position it should be held during a rain until the roof and pipes are washed, when the water may be turned into the cistern until the latter is full, when, of course, the pipe should again be changed to cause the water to pass oif through the waste-pipe.

The device described is simple in its construction and effective in its operation.

I am aware that it is not new with me to construct a rain-water cut-oft' with a single receiving-pipe and two discharge-pipes, the water being diverted into either discharge-pipe at will by a guiding-plate, and I therefore do not broadly cla-im such a construction; but
