FILTER-PRESS SWITCH-COCK AND DO'UBLE-GUTTER CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed March 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTON E. SPERRY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of 188 Main street, Batavia, Kane county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Filter-Press vide an improved construction and arrange ment whereby the switch cocks may be crowded close together in av row above the double gutter, without interfering with each other, and whereby no movable parts are necessary except the plug or movable valve member of each cook or faucet, thereby obviating the necessity of using tools in switching the discharge from one trough to the other, and insuring greater convenience in the manipulation of the cocks or faucets when it is desired to switch the discharge of either one or more or all of the sections of the press.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction and combinations tending to increase the general elliciency and desirability of a filter press switch cock and double gutter construction of this particular character.
To these and other useful ends my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is an end elevation of a filter press equipped with a switch cock and double gut ter arrangement embodying the principles of my invention, portions of the press being broken away for convenience of illustration, and the end of the double gutter being partly broken away to show the longitudinal partition thereof in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of one of the switch cocks. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a similar section on line 44 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a lower end view of the switch cock plug showing the retaining collar.

acter, such as those made in sections arranged flatwise together. The double gutter B has a longitudinal partition I) to provide the two parallel troughs. This gutter extends below the switch cocks C, the latter being arranged in a horizontal row, in the well known manner. It will also be understood that each section of the press has one of these switch cocks.
As shown in Fig. 2, each switch cock C has a casing provided with a downwardly bent nozzle 2, an inlet portion 3, and a plug 4.- disposed vertically therein. Said plug has an upper transverse passage 5 for connecting the inlet passage 6 with the nozzle passage 7, whereby the liquid may be discharged into the trough 8 below. This plug also has a lower lateral inlet 9 which communicates with, the upper end of the vertical bore 10 provided in the lower portion of the plug. A feed chamber 11 in the casing extends downward from the end of the passage 6 and is common to the passage 5 and the inlet opening 9, but i not wide enough to communicate with both at the same time, as said passage and opening are set at right angles or 45 degrees apart, when viewed from above, as shown in Fig. 4., thus making it impossible for both to communicate with said chamber at the same time. The bore 10 has an outlet 12 at the lower end of the plug, and the latter has a collar 18 which bears against a shoulder 14 on the casing, thereby holding the tapered plug 4 against upward displacement. The upper end of said plug has a head or handle 15 which is made short to prevent interference between them when the cocks are crowded tightly together.
When the plug is adjusted as shown in the drawings, the liquid will fiow'through the passage 6, the chamber 11, the opening 9, and discharge from the bore 10 and outlet 12 into the trough 16 below. If the plug be given a quarter turn or twist, then the liquid will be shut off from the bore 10 and will discharge through the passage 5 and the nozzle 2 into the trough 8 at the outer side of the gutter. Another quarter turn of the plug and both the passage 5 and the opening 9 are cut of]? and there will be no discharge either way.
No tools are necessary for the switching of the discharge from one trough to the other. Also with this construction, the cocks C can be crowded tightly together, if
necessary, without causing any interference between them. Moreover, the discharge openings occupy fixed positions at opposite sides of the partition in the gutter, making it impossible for either opening to discharge into the wrong side of the gutter, and for these reasons I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described.
7 What I claim as my invention is 1. A filter press switch cock and double gutter construction comprising a clownwardly tapered rotary plug for the cook, a downturned stationary discharge nozzle for the cock, said plug being disposed over one channel of the gutter, said nozzle being disposed over the other channel of said gutter, whereby said nozzle and the vertical axis of said plug have fixed positions at opposite sides of a vertical plane extending between the two channels, means for holding said plug in position, said plug having a transverse passage for connecting the filter press with the nozzle, and said plug having a discharge bore and lateral inlet therefor below said passage, said bore having an outlet at the exposed lower end of the plug, said nozzle beingarranged to preclude communication thereof with said bore.
2. A filter press switch cock and double gutter construction comprising a downwardly tapered rotary plug for the cock, a
downturned stationary discharge nozzle for the cock, said plug being disposed over one channel ofthe gutter, said nozzle being disposed over the other channel of said "gutter, whereby said nozzle and the veri tical axisof said plug have fixed positions at opposite sides of a vertical plane extendmg between the two channels, means for holdlng said plug in position, said plug having a transverse passage for connecting the filter press with the nozzle, and said plug having a discharge bore and lateral inlet therefor below said passage, said bore having an outlet at the exposed lower end of the plug, said nozzle being arranged to preclude communication thereof with said bore, and said passage and inlet being disposed at right angles or forty-five degrees apart when viewed from above, the cock having a feed chamber common to said passage and inlet, said chamber being of a width to cooperate only separately with said passage and inlet.
3. A filter press switch cock and double gutter construction comprising a downwardly tapered rotary plug for the cock, :1 downturned stationary discharge nozzle for the cock, said plug being disposed over one channel of the gutter, said nozzle being disposed over the other channel of said gutter, whereby said nozzle and the vertical axis of said plug have fixed positions at opposite sides of a vertical plane extending between the two channels, means for holding said plug in position, said plug having a transverse passage for connecting the filter press with the nozzle, and said plug having a discharge bore and lateral inlet therefor below said passage, said bore having an outlet at the exposed lower end of the plug, said nozzle being arranged to preclude communication thereof with said bore, said means consisting of a collar on the lower end of said plug, the cock having a shoulder for engaging the top of said collar.
