G. W. MAHLMAN-N.
FAUGET.
No. 409,691. Patented Aug. 27, 1889.
Ill/grill]! a, /fil UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
GEORGE IV. MAHLMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,691, dated August 27, 1889. Application filed May 21, 1889. Serial No, 311,680. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. MAHLMANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a faucet for bath-tubs or wash-basins to admit hot or cold water or both mixed to the desired proportion; and with that object in view my invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my faucet; Fig. 2, a section on a horizontal line, and Fig. 23 a vertical cross-section of the same, and Fig. at a vertical cross-section of the inlet of the faucet.
Corresponding letters of reference in the several figures of the drawings designate like I parts.
A is the shell conically bored; B, the inletnozzle divided by a vertical partition a to provide two separate channels Z) and 0, one to communicate with the cold-water-supply pipe and the other one with the hot-watersupply pipe; and D is the wateroutlet spent. The plug E is cast hollow and is turned conical, and is snugly fitted into the bore of the shell. This plug E has square opening c for admitting the water from inlet-nozzle I3, and another opening f, diametrically opposite to opening e, for allowing the water to escape into the outlet-spout I), which latter opening is round and is sufficiently large to provide a full-width escape, while the supply may be regulated to be more or less. Inside of this plug E, I provide, intermediate of openings c and f, avertical partition g, which I prefer to make V-shaped, and which extends from the bottom of the faucet to near the top thereof, with its sharp corner pointing toward opening f. This plug E, I secure in the bore of the shell by a washer 7L and nut 13, fitted upon the screw-threaded extension j, Cast centrally to the bottom of plug E, and the top of this plug is provided with a handle 7.: of any usual shape.
WVhile the plug is adjusted as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings, hot and cold water will be admitted in equal quantities, which water of different temperatures being obstructed in its direct course toward the outlet-spout by partition g, and having to pass over such partition (,it is thoroughly mixed before it can escape through spout D into the bath-tub or wash-bowl, the V shape of said partition 9 particularly tending to intermix the two currents by directing their courses to cross each other, and thus bring them in intimate combination before escaping over the top of such partition.
By turning the plug more or less to the right or left, so as to shut partly or entirely the channel 1) or 0, hot or cold water may be drawn proportionally less or by itself, and by turning the plug a quarter-revolution the faucet will be entirely shut.
It will be readily seen that the device is very simple and effective for the intended purpose.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a faucet for the purpose described, the combination, with the shell having an inlet-nozzle divided by a partition for connecting with hot and cold water supply-pipes and having a water-outlet spout, of the plug cast hollow and provided with a partition extending from the bottom to near the top of such plug, substantially as set forth.
2. In a faucet for the purpose described, the combination, with shell A, having an inlet-nozzle B, divided by a partition a, to pro vide two separated channels I) and 0, one to connect with a cold and the other one with a hot water supply pipe and having an outlet-spout D, of conical plug E, cast hollow and provided with openings 6 and f, and with a V-shaped partition g, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses. GEORGE \V. MAIILMANN. lVitnesses:
WILLIAM H. Lorz, Orro LUBKERT.
