COMBINED COLLAR-BUTTON AND TIE-STAY.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER F. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, resident of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Combined Collar-l3uttons and Tie-Stays; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the invention on the line 11 Fig. 3 with the points withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the points projected outwardly. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the button and stay. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail side view of the branched spring and the center stay pin.

The invention has relation to a combined collar button and tie stay, having for its object the provision of an improved device of this character to hold the tie securely in position, centered to and covering the collar button.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the collar button, provided with a head 3, preferably oval in plan view and oval in side View; a hollow stem or shank d, and a circular base 5, dished upon its rear side at 6 and provided with an inturned margin 7.

Fitting within the shank of the button is a wire spring 7, having an inner coiled or looped central portion 8, and opposite lateral branches 8, 8', spaced apart, said branches being slightly bowed inwardly toward each other and terminating forwardly in lapped points 9, 9, joined to the branches proper by curved portions 10, 10, said curved portions being normally located within the hollow head of the button. These lapped points normally fit neatly in a countersink 11 of the top wall of the hollow head of the button, flush with the surface of said top wall.

ton is a helically coiled spring 12, the outer margin or coil of which is securely clamped beneath the inturned edge of the base, said spring having an inner forwardly extending termination or end 18, having a loop 1 1 engaging the central coil 8 of the spring 7. A straight center stay pin 15 is located between the branches of the spring 7, and at its rear end has a loop 16 engaging the coil 8. The pointed forward end 17 of this stay pin is normally withdrawn in rear of the lapped points 9, 9, within a tubular sheath 18, extending rearwardly' toward the shank and oined at its outer end to the forward wall of the countersink of the head of the button. This sheath holds the center stay pin accurately in position, and also acts as a guide for the return to the surface of the pin. should it by accident be forced too far within the button.

In the use of this invention, when the finger is pressed against the exposed helical spring at the back of the button, said spring, the bowed spring and the center stay pin will be pressed forwardly, the lapped points 9, 9 being pushed out of the countersink of the head of the button and the curved portions 10, 10 passing out of the hollow head through openings or slits 9, 9, and, owing to the inherent elasticity of the bowed spring, said points will be sprung apart into the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the center stay pin being also pushed forwardly without the head of the button, between the now spread points 9, 9. It is designed, however, that the bowed spring, upon release of the helical spring by finger pressure thereupon, shall be capable of moving forward, to spread the lapped points, by its own elasticity, owing to the bearing taken by the bowed spring against the shank of the button at the points 03, m. The finger pressure being now released, the lapped points will be drawn together toward their seats in the button head by the elasticity of the helical spring, said points penetrating the tie and holding it firmly fixed against and covering the head of the button, the center stay pin being at the same time withdrawn toward its seat in the sheath and preventing any sidewise movement of the tie that would tend to draw it out of centered position. The branches of the bowed spring should, at the central portions, between y-'3 be slightly thinner than elsewhere. In the "elease of the tie, the finger is again pressed against the helical spring, and the lapped pointed ends of the bowed spring, closely engaged within the cloth of the tie, will open, the center pin, projected between said pointed ends, engag'ng and holding the tie, to allow a free opening movement of said ends out of the tie cloth.

I claim:

1. A combined collar button and tie stay, comprising a button having a hollow head provided with a center opening and lateral openings, a hollow shank and a dished base, a spring in said base, a spring in said shank connected with the base spring and having opposite branches, spaced apart, engaging said lateral openings and provided with opposite pointed ends, and a straight center pin located between said banches and engaging said center opening.

2. A combined collar button and tie stay, comprising a button having a hollow head provided with a countersink, a center opening and lateral openings, a hollow shank and a dished base, a helical spring in said base, a spring in said shank having opposite branches spaced apart engaging said lateral openings and connected with said helical spring, and lapped pointed ends n0r mall-y fitting in said countersink, and a straight center pin located between the branches of said spring and engaging said center opening.

3. A combined collar button and tie stay, comprising a button having a hollow head provided with a countersink, lateral slits, a center opening and a guide tube in rear of said opening, a hollow shank and a dished base, a helical spring in said base, a spring in said shank having opposite branches spaced apart engaging said slits, a. center coil connected with said helical spring and lapped pointed ends normally fitting in said countersink, and a straight center pin located between the branches of said spring engaging said center tube and adapted to be projected through said center opening.

4. A combined collar button and tie stay, comprising a button having a hollow head provided with a center opening and lateral openings, a hollow shank and a dished base, a helical spring in said base, a spring in said shank having opposite branches spaced apart engaging said lateral openings and connected with said helical spring, and normally lapped ends, and a straight center pin located between said branches and engaging said center opening.
