Description

NW. 2, 19 E. PIZZARELYLI 2,453,034.
FASTENING MEANS Filed NOV. 25. 1945 IN VEN TOR. ERA 57 P1zzngs4g Patented Nov. 2, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to means for fastening an instrument such as a fountain pen, pencil, tu bular flashlight, thermometer, or the like, in the pocket of a garment; and has for its object the provision of improved means whereby the instrument can be readily and easily inserted in the pocket and, if desired, fastened securely therein.
The objects of the invention and the means of achieving the same will become apparent from the following description of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side view of an embodiment of the invention partially broken away showing the structure of the fastening means as applied to a tubular article.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section view of the structure shown in Fig. 1 taken on the line 3-3 thereof.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 1 taken on the line 4-4 thereof.
Referring to the drawings, indicates an instrument such as a fountain pen, pencil, tubular flashlight, or the like, and II the portion thereof carrying a clip l2. In the case of an instrument, such as a fountain pen or the like, provided with a removable cap which carries a clip, the member I l is not made integral with the instrument H], but is the cap which may be fitted thereon in conventional fashion. In the case of a capless instrument such as a capless fountain pen, pencil or other instrument, the portion ll forms a part of the body of the entire instrument ill.
The fastening means comprises a spring-like member [3, attached, as at M, by appropriate means such as rivets and the like, or in case of metal-to-metal, soldering, brazing, welding or any other appropriate means. Member I3 may be provided at its upper end with a pressure-element such as a button or projection l5 which protrudes through an orifice [6. Below thebutton I 5, the member [3 may be provided with a pin or projection l! which protrudes through an orifice IS.
The structure thus combines a fastening device consisting of the conventional clip supplemented by means for fastening the instrument securely in the fabric of a pocket or other material. When the instrument is inserted, for example, in a pocket without manipulating the pressure element IE, it will enter the pocket and be held therein by the clip alone. The instrument will penetrate the pocket element entirely up to the upper region of the clip. However, if it is desired to securely fasten it in this position, the button is depressed thereby causing the pin to be retracted, and thus allowing the instrument to be inserted into the pocket to the full extent of the clip. Upon release of the button the pin will move forward and penetrate or grip the fabric. The tip of the pin or projection I! which contacts the fabric may be pointed to effectuate penetration, or blunt or ridged so as to press the fabric against the inside Wall of the clip.
If desired, the instrument may be constructed so that the pin will be positioned further down on the spring.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. Fastening means for a tubular instrument comprising the combination of the Wall of the instrument; a clip attached to the wall; a spring extending upwardly within the instrument in the line of the clip and attached at its base to the aforesaid wall; means at the upper free end of the spring extending through and beyond an orifice in the wall and above the point of attachment of the clip thereto whereby the spring may be actuated; and a pin attached to the spring extending through and beyond an orifice in the wall at a point between the lower end of the clip and the point of its attachment to the wall.
2. Fastening means for a tubular instrument comprising the combination of: the wall of the instrument; a depending clip attached to the wall; a spring extending upwardly within the instrument in the line of the clip, the spring being attached at its base to the wall and terminatingat its upper free end in a projection which extends outwardly through and outside the said Wall at a point above the point of attachment of the clip thereto; and a pin attached to the spring which extends through and outside the wall at a point between the lower end of the clip and the point of its attachment to the wall.
3. Fastening means comprising: a wall; a clip attached to the wall; a spring member attached to the wall extending upwardly in the line of the clip, the spring being attached at its base to the reverse side of the wall and terminating at its upper free end in a projection which extends outwardly through and beyond the said wall at a point above the point of attachment of the clip thereto; and a pin attached to the spring which extends through and beyond the wall at a point between the lower end of the clip and the point of its attachment to the wall.
