To atl whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Go'rrnon BINDER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, State of New York, have invented certain new and n Clare the following tobe exact description of the same, reference beuseful Improvements in Safety Devices for Centrifugal Extractors; and I do hereby de-` a full, clear, and
ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
vgal ence to such machines as are employed for` My present invention relates to centrifuextractors, with more particular referdrying different materials as for instance @clothes in laundries, and it has for its object 'the provision of va novel andA improved ar- `'rangement of safety devices that will overcome some of the defects present in the ma chines now generally in use. A further object of my invention conslsts in providing a locking device for the cover of the extractor which will prevent the cover from being opened when the machine is lin operation and also prevent starting themachine when thecover isopen.
Still anothervobject of my invention resides in the provlsion ofl novel Speed 'contf'rolled mechanism which is so .arranged as fto "prevent the extractor cover from being opened until `the machine has come to a V `standstill.l
tion', partly in section,
To these and other ends the invention con- `slstsin certain improvements and combinafullyv described, the pointed out in' the tlons of parts, all as will be hereinafter more claims at the end of the specification.

,In 'the present embodiment of my invention, l designates the base of the extractor be of usual form, and.2 is the whlle 3 `designates which may body Portion, ing vreceptacle other materials are placed'when the water is 4 is an extractor cover, carrying bracket arms 5 which 'are journaled an eXtension7 which carries a curved abutment or bar 8 fora purpose that will appear presently.` f
In machines of this character, itis highly the rotaia-' within' which the clothes or' on the rod 6, the latter serving asa support for. the cover. One of the bracket arms 5 isprovided with desirable to automatically controlthe cover 1n such a way that it cannot be opened until 'the machine has come to a complete stand 75 still, and further, so'that th maehine cannot be started while the cover is open. Itis device be provided for the `cover, which is .so connected to a plurality of controlling members, that the several purposes referred to may'v heeecomplished with a construction thatv is atonce simple and easy to manufacture. To these ends, I
erably in the Aform of a rod tically movable in theguide-lO, being proprovide a locking device, pre f- 9 which is vervided with stops 11- to limit its movement" upwardly and downwardly. The rod 9' is l an opening or recess. l2

the .latter being secured upon the locking rod vS, as shownfin Fig. 5. -It will'be seen that when the locking yrod is `raised tothe 5, the ,cover may beiope'ned,

and when the locking rod is lowered Jitis Vlocking rod Q .may 'be accomplished in dil'erl i v4impossible to openthe cover. .Thes'e'move 4 I machine is not in motion.
device are accomplished preferably by hand, through the 'means I have just described, and it is connected' up in a manner as will presently be made clear, so as to prevent it from being moved by the manually controlled means, except when the ments of the locking Y vided with a handle 27 by which the shifter shifter so as to start the machine. To
j belt into `engagement with the fixed 22,-the opening machine' will run l device th into the receptacle vided aspeed -1s also connected with the locking device 9,
l pulley,
nmovement, the cover `heav with considerable momentum until the mav maybe moved back and forth to effect starting and stopping of the machine. hen the shifter has moved. the' belt onto the fast it is desirable to lock the cover against opening, and when the cover is open, it is desirable to prevent movement o Ithe t is end, the locking device described hereinbefore is pivotally connected to a bai` 28 which is'v fixed upon the rock shaft 29. The bar 28 ,carries at its outer end a pivotally mountedA 'verticallyextending rod 30 which moves in to engage the v the guide31 and'is adapted beforementioned opening v26 of the shifter. Thus it will be seen that when the shifter is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the opening 26 which passes therethrough when raised. This permitsthe locking device 9 to be operated to 'enable the cover to be opened. When, however, the machine is in'operation and the belt shifter is moved to bringthe 26 will be out of alinement with the rod 30, and the latter cannot, there- '.fore, be raised.: As long as this condition exists, the locking device 9 is `held against being locked in its y It will'be ,evident that the p for a greater or less perio of time after the power belt isv shifted to the loose pulley, .and that with only the locking us far described, the cover might he opened while the receptacle is still in motion.. This is extremely dangerous an h as not infrequently beenl the cause of serious 4accidents, whenf'an operator reaches I before it has stopped rotati g, and `catches an arm or hand in the wet materials which are still moving closed position.
chine-comestol a complete standstill. It is to obviatethis possibility'that have procontrolled mechanism which and in such a manner as` to prevent any which are mounted on blocks will bein lin/e with the rod 30 pulley .when the starting me movement of it until the extractor receptacle has entirely stopped moving. or accomplishing this, I provide arms 32 which are fixed upon the rock shaft 29 and are pivotally connected. at 33 to the shoes 34 35. The latter are arranged beneath and engage the collar 37 in engagement'with the bushing 38, the latter being shaft 17. The ring 36 is also provided with inclined ways or recesses 39 to receive the balls 40 which normally occupy the position shown in Fig. 8, resting against the collar 37. Also fixedly mountedon the bushing 38 is a collar 41 provided with the arms 42, which have downwardly-projecting extensions 43 and flanges 44, cooperating with the balls 40 whereby to limit the outward movement .of the latter and also to prevent upward movement of the ring 36 when the balls are in the position shown in Fig. When the machine is at rest, the balls 40 are in their innermost positions so that when the'locking device 9 is raised, the arms 32 can likewise be elevated, while the ring 36 moves upwardly on the bushing 38. When the machine is in motion, however, 40 are thrown voutwardly by centrifugal force far enough so that they lie beneath the flanges 44 and are engaged thereby upon vertical movement of the ring 36. This serves to effectually prevent the locking device 9 from being raised at all until the shaft 17 has entirely stopped its movement, or at least so nearly that no harm could be done by raising the cover. It has been found by actual experiment that, as a matterof fact, the cover cannot be lifted until the machine is practically stopped. That is to say, as long as the balls 40. are ever so slightly removed from engagement with the collar 37 by centrifugal action, they will engage the flanges 44 and retain the locking device in its lowered position.
I cla-im as my invention:
