j had whom it mag concern:
' Be t known tha til'r, Josmrr r J. ML\'R'rY,citizen of theihifited "States; of Boston, in'the Massachusetts, have invented "certain new end useiiil improvements in Tower-"Driven Mechanism, of which the following isf'a specification.
My invention relates to gna l-(1s for machinery which serve to protectthe operator or attendant "from injury, and the object thereof is to provide an improved ,guard of this kind pa'rti'ctilar ly adapted to extractors such as are used inlau'ndriesfto remove Witter iroin dlothes. p
Extractors oi the kind referred to com- 'ng a central opening rung a revolving basket flflitli'lll which the wet clothes are p laced. The basket with its contents is very rapidly rotated so that the enter contained in the clothes will be removed and thrown oif by centrltuga-l iorce. It is common practice for an 'perator o l such a machine to reach ClQWIl into the basket irnn te'ly 'aiter starting the machine and before thebasket 'acqiiir'es much speed and to push the (lldth'essnugly down intothe basket. 4 gagged in t is operation a Wet garment will become entangded with his; hand or 'a rnrtmd also {with the rotating sha' tt whichsupports the basket with the result that the -opera tors arm is twisted around the shaft and broken or seriously injured. invention makes it imposs i-"lolel tter a 'n aocident Of this sort to happen and it consists 035a guard for machinery embodying the novel features of construetion and mode of operation set i erth in the fol-loiviiig"description and pan ticularly pointed out and defined in the claims at the close thereof;
In the accompanying dra-ivingsr p Figgi'u e 1 is a side eie'vz'ition partly in sec tion o f=a hydro-extractor fonlaiindries constructed in accei'darnce with 'my invention.
Qis a side elev-ation ofa part oi. the mechanism shown in Fig; '1 but showing the gate, hereinafter "described in "its open positron.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation oi tlielow'erpon ti'on oi" the gate by itself. y Fig. 4 is a section on line *o f Fig. 1, drawn to a larger scale. Fig 5 is a front elevation partly in ee'tion of a perti'en of tlie nacfhine showing the gate in its closed" pesition.
Sometilnes While ent sl own my invention embodied in a hydroextractor for use in launh'i'es but, as Will be clear later, my invention may be embodied in other kinds of machines.
Having reference to the (h-swings, 1 represents "the "housing of the extractor and the rotata lile basket arranged Within said housing. The basket 2 is supported by a sha ft'3, Figs. sand 5, supported at its upper end by a hearing in an arm a} projecting from'a post Near its nppeinend'the shaft 3 carries a ,p'iilley 6 connected 'by a. belt 7 with a pulley 8 fast on the main driving shai't'9. Shaft "9 carries a tight pulley 1'0 and 'a loose pulley 1'21 which cooperate with. adri'vin belt, not shown, that is controlled by a belt shipper 12, mounted in guides To the belt shipper 12 is pivota'lly connected one end of a control member 14; Whose op posite end extendstlwough a slot 15 formed in the frame oi the machine and is provided With aha ndlelti by means of Which the control member 14: is manually manipulated to operate the belt shipper 12, and to shift the driving belt, not shown, back and forth between -tli'e't'igl1tand loose pulleys 1t) and 11. The housing 1 ismade with a cap 1"? ji o'rmed with a central opening 18, which is of about the same diameter as the open- "ing in the upper end of the basket 2.
2 through the cent al opening 18 and it IS customary for the operator to use his hand and arm to force the clothes snugly down into "the basket and it is common practice for the operatorsof machines of this to; do this immediately after having pulled the control member 14 forward to start the machine. This, as already -eX- plained, frequently results in injury to the arm'of the operator. In accordance With my invention Tpr'ovide a movablergate 19 which is adapted to occupy a position in "front of t heshaft 3 With its ends adjacent the two uprights 20 forming pa-rt of the frame of the machine and when in that position said gate makes it impossible for the operator to insert his hand Within the machine. This te 1'9 is pyovided near its lower end with trucks 21 mounted upon a rail 22 secured by screws. or otherwise, to the cap 17 Within the central opening 18 thereof. The rail 22 is in the form of a ring and when movement of thepgate is not opposed or ,pre-
may be swing around shaft 3 into a position back of the latter so as to render the interior of the basket 2 accessible. In accordance with my invention the gate 19 and the control member 1st are interconnected so that the control member 1 1 cannot be shifted to start the machine until the gate 19 has been closed, that is, until the gate 19 has been swung into position in front of shaft 3, and so that after the gate has been closed and the machine has been started the gate 19 cannot be opened again until after the control member 1 1 has been shifted to stop the machine. The means, herein shown for securing this mode of control, comprises a lock bar 23 pivoted at one end at 24 to one of the uprights 20 and having its opposite end made with a for: straddling the cam 25 herein shown as a semi-circular bar having inwardly bent ends 26 secured to the ends of the gate 19 and havin g its middle portion fastened by means of a screw to a post 27 projecting from gate 19. One end of this cam rod 25 is made with a deflection 28 so that the portion 29 of the cam 28, which is in engagement with lock bar 23, when gate 19 is closed, is higher than the other portion of cam 25.
The lock bar .23 is arranged adjacent the slot 15 through which the control member 14; extends and said lock bar extends across the top of the control member and is locked in its uppermost position by the latter, when said control member occupies its forward position with the driving belt on the tight iulley 10. It will thus be seen that with the lock bar 28, thus supported by the control member 4, the gate 19 cannot be swung in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1 into its open position for the reason that the deflection 28, of cam 25, cannot pass the lock bar 23 because the latter is held by the control. member 14: against bein swung downward. I
The control member 14- is made upon its underside with a notch 30, positioned so that when the control member 11 is shoved rearwardly into position. to carry the driving belt onto the loose pulley, 11, said notch registers with the lower end of the slot 15 and permits the forward end of the control member H to swing downward thereby leaving the lock bar 23 free to swing downward under the influence of deflection 28 when the gate 19 is swung toward the right, Fi 4:. "When the gate 19 is swung to the rear of shaft 3, into its open position, the downward movement of the lock bar 23, occasioned by the deflection 28, brings the lock bar into position close to the top of control member 14 so that it serves to lock the control member against being lifted to disengage the notch 30 from the lower end of slot 15 and, as will be clear, said control mem her is thus held immovable until the gate 19 is swung back to its closed position again.
new
When the gate 19 has been swun back to its closed position again, the dehection 2 8 lifts the lock bar 23 into its uppermost position again so that thereafter the forward end of the control member 1 1 can be lifted sufficiently to disengage notch 30 from the lower end of slot 15 and pulled forward to start the machine.
The gate 19 comprises a frame made up of two horizontal semi-circular bars 31 and 32 connected by three upright bars 33, the lower ends of the latter extending below the trucks 21 and formed into hooks 3 1, 85 and 36, projecting under the rail 22 which prevent upward displacement of the gate when deflection 28 strikes lock bar 23 or when the operator attempts to shift the control member 14 to start the machine while the gate 19 occupies its open position. A lattice of interwoven wire rods 87,. secured to the fame of the gate, completes the latter.
In order to prevent the gate 19 from being rotated in the wrong direction when shifting it from its closed to its open position, and in order to limit its movement to one-half of a revolution. around the shaft 3, a stop 38 is provided. This step is a small plate secured to the under side of the rail 22, so that when the gate is swung from its open to its closed position, the hook 3% engages said stop and limits its movement in that direction and when swung from its closed to its open position the hook 36 engages saidvstop and limits its movement in that direction.
It is customary to provide machines of the kind herein illustrated, with a sheet metal guard 39 secured to the uprights 20 of the machine, said guard surrounding the rear half of the opening 18. Thus when the gate 19 occupies its closed position it is impossible for the operator to insert. his arm into the opening 18 from any direction.
My improved guard is simple in con struction and mode of operation and efiec' 'tively protects the operator from injury through the cause above referred to and also makes it impossible for anyone to in sert his hand or arm into the machine while it is in operation.
The cam rod 25 is at a convenient height, and in a convenient position, to be used as a handle by means of which to rotate the guard 19 when opening or closing the same.
Pivoted at 4:0 to one of the uprights 20 is a lever 41 whose lower arm is made with a hook 42 cooperating with lock bar 23 and adapted to occupy a position immediately below said lock bar when the latter is held in its uppermost position by cam bar 25. The upper end of lever 41 is connected through a pin and slot joint 43 with an arm 44. fast on a rock shaft 45 journaled in a bracket 46 secured to the frame of the machine. This shaft 15 also has fastened to it aobell crank lever 47, one armyof which it carries astud 48 engaging a grooved collar Therear end of spindle i9 is: threaded and occupies a threaded socket providedwithin a :yoke 52 that is pivoted at 53 to abrake lever a.; The brake lever 54 is supported and carries a brake operating -w1th the pivotally shoe 55 coperipheryaof pulley 6.
1 Mounted on the spindle49 is a compressed ally bination moans therefor, a powercontr0ll1ng member coiled spring 57, oneend of which bears against bracket 50 and the-other end against collar 58 so that when spindle 49 is manurotated in one direction, its inner threaded end, acting through socket 552, swings brake lever 54 toward and against pulley 6but with a yieldingpressure-supplied by spring That is, after brake lever 54: has been brought into, engagement with pulley6, continued rotation of spindle 49 moves the latter endwise inbracket 50 against the pressure of spring57." It willthus be clear that when spindle 4911s rotated to set the brake, the latter is "first set and thereafter an endwise movement is imparted to spindle l9 which acts through collar 58, bell crank 47, rock shaft 45 and arm 4% to swing lever 41 in a direction to remove hook 42 from beneath lock bar 23 so that gate 19 can only be opened after and while the brake is applied topulleyb. uThis makes it impossible to open gate 19 while the shaft 3 is in motion. The arm 60 of bellcrank 47 serves as an indicator to show a the positionof the brake.
What I claim is i 1 1. In a hydro-extractor,the combination with a housin provided with through which the articles to be treated are inserted and removed, of a rotatable basket withinsaid housing, a guard mounted on said housing for movement about the aXis of rotation of said basketto open and close said opening, a driving shaft connected to said basket, driving means for said shaft, a powercontrolling member to connect said driving means to and disconnect it from the shaft, and an interlocking connection between said guard and said powercontrolling member whereby the controlling mem ber is locked from movement except when the guard is closed and the guard is locked closed so long as the controlling member is in position to connect the driving means to the driving shaft.
2. In a power-driven machine, the comwlth a driving shaft, of driving to connccasaid driving means to and disconnect it from said shaft, a device operated by said shaft, a guard for said device, a brake for said device, and an interlocking connection between said guard and brake 1 said housing,-
an opening whereby when the guard is closed it is locked from movement so long as the brake is in inoperative positiombut is unlocked when the brake is applied. 1

In ahydro-extractor, in combination, a housingiprovided with an opening through which the articles to be treated are inserted and removed; arotatable basket within said housing; a guard movablymounted on said housing adjacent said opening so as to oc cupy open or closed positions: a power controlling member; and means interlocking said guard and member through which each controls the other so that the guard can be i opened only. when the member is shifted into position tothrow the power off and said member can be shifted to throw the power on only after said guard has been closed.
5. In a hydro-extractor, in combination, a housing provided with an opening through which the articles to be treated are inserted and withdrawn; a rotatable basket within said housing; an annular rail 011 said housing and surrounding said opening; a guard movably mounted on said rail so that it can be shiftedthereon into and out of closed posit-ion; a power controlling member, and means interlocking said guard and member so that the guard can be opened only when said member is in position to disconnect the machine from the power and so that said member can be shifted to connect the machine with the power only when the guard oc'cupics its closed position.
