SAFETY APPLIANCE FOR CENTRIFUGAL MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 787,673, dated April 18, 1905. Application filed May 16, 1904. Serial No. 208,097.
- 1'0 all whom it TIMI/y concern.-
thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a safety mechanism for protecting the operatives of centrifugal machines used more particularly for wringing clothes or fabric and for similar purposes.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of our machine with the protectingcover in closed position. Fig. 2 shows the same with the cover in open position. Fig. "3
is a plan view of the casing of the centrifugal machine and of the cover in closed position, together with certain details of the mechan ism. Fig. 4: is a vertical section of the machine, together with the protecting-cover, in-
its closed position.
Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description, 1 indicates the stationary casing of a centrifugal machine. The ordinary rotary basket 2 is suspended in the casing by means of the shaft 3, which has ably of the general parabolical form shown, and consists, preferably, of two sections sufficiently separated to provide the Slotted opening 8 and which sections are connected by the U-shaped yokes 14 14 The slot 8 receives the supporting-shaft 3 and allows the cover to move from the open to the closed position and, from the closed to the open position. The cover His pivoted at either side at 15 in the lower portion of the frame 5, which rises from the top of the casing 1, and the cover is adapted to swing on the pivots 15 from the position in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2. The cover is provided with an arm 16, which is adapted to engage with an arm 17 on the belt-shifting rod or lever 17. The belt-shifting rod or lever 17 has a loop 18, which engages or receives the driving-belt 13 and controls its position in shifting from the loose pulley 11 to the tight pulley 10 on the counter-shaft. The rod 17 is preferably provided on'the end adjacent to the working side of the machine with ahand-loop, and notches serve as catches for securingit in its adjusted positions, as shown in the drawings.
It will be noted that when the cover 14, which mightalso, perhaps,be called a guard, is in the open position the arm 16 engages with the arm 17 of the belt-shifter and the belt cannot be shifted fromthe loose pulley to the tight pulley to start the machine. The only way that the machine can be thrown into operation is by first closing the cover or guard I 1%1, which frees the belt-shifter, so that the belt can be thrown onto the tight pulley. The arrangement of the arms 16 and 17 is such that when the belt-shifter is in the driving position the arm 17 will engage the arm 16 and prevent the cover or guard from being partially opened, and gravity will close it from such partially-open position. It will be understood that these machines are filled and operated from the side. toward the right, as shown in the figures of the drawings, and that the cover or guard when closed, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4 of the drawings, makes the basket 2, with its contents, inaccessible for the operator.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a centrifugal wringing-machine having a rotary basket, an open-topped surrounding casing for the basket, and means for mounting and driving the basket, of a protective cover of a general parabolical form hinged at its corners, means for controlling the application of power to drive the basket, and an interfering connection between the cover and controlling means, whereby the power cannot be applied while the cover is in open position and the cover cannot be open while the power is applied, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a centrifugal machine of the character described, having an inclosing casing, of a guard adapted to close the machine from the filling or accessible position, a driving mechanism for operating the machine, and means for controlling the driving mechanism, and an interfering connection between the guard and controlling mechanism, whereby the machine can only be put in operation when the guard is in closed position, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a centrifugal wringing-machine having a rotary basket, an
open-topped surrounding casing for the basket, means for mounting anddriving the hasket, consisting, in part, of a suspended shaft and a frame for supporting the shaftabove the casing, of a protective cover of a general parabolical form hinged at its corners to said frame and havinga slotted opening to receive J. S. JOHNSTON. THOS. H. MURPHY.
