Specicaton ofrLetters Patent.
' .Patented 0015.5, 1915.
Application filed July 25,1914. Serial No. 853,158.
To all whom t may concern:`
Be it known that I, JOHN'L. CABELL, a citizen of the United States, residing atSavannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements:y in Special Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new Vand useful improvements in special receptacles, and has for its primary object t0 provide a device of this character which will be of extremely simple construction and operation as well as cheap to manufacture and highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be especially adapted for holdingsticks of chewing gum and similararticles and presenting a new article to position for removal upon the removal of the uppermost article.
The invention has for another object to provide a special receptacle of this character including an inner box adapted for sliding movement in a case and provided with a false bottom and means for resiliently forcing said false bottom upwardly to press the uppermost article placed upon said false bottom against the top of the casing, at one end of which is provided a cutaway portion whereby the uppermost article may be readily grasped and extracted when the inner box is` pressed inwardly against a spring provided for resiliently retaining said box in normal position within said casing.
The invention has for a further object to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and increase the efHciency thereof without materially increasing the cost of the same.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be hadto the following description and accompanying drawings, in whichstop shoulder 3 being Figure l is a perspective view of the complete device in use, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal' longitudinal section through t e device on the plane of line 3 3 of Fig.
2, looking in the vdirection indicated by the n Referring in detail to the drawingsyby numerals, 1 designates the outer casing which has one end closed, as shown at 2, while the opposite end of said'outer casing is open, a lpositioned in the closed end of the outer casing l, at the upper portion thereof and extending transversely of said outer casing to prevent the uppermost article 4L resting upon the false bottom 5 from moving rearwardly in the outer casing 1 upon inward movement of the sliding box 6. within which said false bottomy is positioned and resiliently forced upwardly by means of a pair of leaf springs 7 which have' their outer orlower ends secured to the solid bottom of said sliding box 6,.while their opposite ends are provided with elongated longitudinal slots 8 through which the guide pins 9 are extended and secured in said false bottom 5.
The top of the outer casing 1 is preferably provided with an opening 10 of oval form within which is positioned a transparent member 11, whereby the contents of the de-` vice may be readily seen, and it will beunderstood that while this device is especially adapted for holding a number of sticks of chewing gum and automatically feeding the same into position to be extracted therefrom tickets and other similarly vshaped articles may be placed in the device also.
It-will also be understood that the outer casing l is provided at its open end with finger openings 12 in its top and bottom by cutting away portions of said top and bottom at the forward or open end of the outer casing, whereby the uppermost article may be readily grasped and withdrawn when the box 6 is forced inwardly against the tension of leaf spring 13 which is secured tothe inner face of the closed end 2 of the outer casing l and has its opposite free ends bearing against the inner end 14f of the sliding box 6 to resiliently retain said box in normal position with its outer end 15 about Hush with the outer open end of the outer casing 1.
It will be readily seen that the finger opening 12 will also permit the operator to readily withdraw the sliding boxy 6 for the purpose of refilling or repairing the same. It will be further noticed that I have cut away the upper corners of the sides of the sliding box 6, while the main portions of said sides are extended into the position adjacent the inner face of the outer casing l. This will permit the rearend Aof the inner sliding casing 6 to slide beneath the stop shoulder 8 and cause the uppermost article upon the false bottom 5 to be forced outwardly and at the same time .prevent upward movement of the inner sliding box 6 when the same is empty or practically empty and make it impossible for the sliding box lto slide over the outer lcasing 1.
Longitudinal movement of the inner sliding box 6 Within ythe 7outer casing 1 is limited by -the guide lug 16, `at the bottom of the inner sliding box 6 and engaging the guide channel 17 formed in the upper face of the bottom of the outer casing 1, and extending for a short distance longitudinally of the same. lt will be evident, however, that the inner sliding box may be readily withdrawn by pressing the opposite sides of the outer casing lto bulge the Vbottom thereof slightly and thereby disengage the .lugs 16 from the vguide groove 17.
Vhile I have shown `and described the preferred embodiment -of my invention, it
Copies of this patent may beobtained "for ve cents each,
than the box .so .as .to ,per-mit a card being pressed against said ytop wall yat a point lpose its .front wall comprising ,a card box having an open upper side, a spring pressed follower mounted in the box and acting to expel the cards upwardly therefrom, a casing for the box, said casing-having anopenend and a recess in its wallat said end, the casing being deeper above the boxa shoulder locatediat the rear end of `the Acasing .above l.the `box and engag ing the .inner vend of vsaid card, and `the casing lbeing @longer than the yholder so that an inward movement of the latter will dis- -inwardly beyond the open end .of the casing and the front end of said ticket, and `a spring maintaining the vholder .in :normal position.
.In testimony whereof I ai'iix `my .signature in presence of .two witnesses.
