EDWIN 'GEORGE HARROP, 0F LONDON, llNfzlrLANl).-
FINGER-RING.
speifiatio'n' of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 23, 1909. Serial No. 519,156.
To all whom 'if may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN (iconos HAR- iior, a subject of the King of England, residingat London, in the Kingdom of England, have invented a new and useful Improvement i'n Finger-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to the inanner of and means foi` providing expanding flexible articles of jewelry composed of a plurality lof spring-controlled links vin permanent engagement with each other, and my objectis to apply a suitable similar lconstruction to the manufacture of fingeriing^,; that is to-say I form rings of hollow middle links each made in a single piece and finished upon'a mandrel with the ends closed and brazedA before receiving the springs, said links havinglongitudinal side slots through which the springs are inserted and which then engage cross-rods of outer links. The shape of the outer-links of the ring may be uniformly flat arranged edgewise and slightly curved so as .to apply closely to the finger.
. A more comprehensive description of my present improvement will now be given with reference -to the accompanying drawings in' Which:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the expanding flexible ring; Fig. 2 is a plan thereof; Fig. 3 is a detachedvicw of the middle portion of the ring; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fa'ce view of one of the slotted middle links in engagement with two consecutive outer links; Fig. 5 is an enlarged edge view of the middle link in engagement with its outer links; .Fig-6 is a face view of a 'slightly' modified middle portion of the ring.
As shown more particularly in Figs. 4 to 6, the :middle links a are formed of. a single piece closed at both ends and the longitudinal side slots l) are formed by thegmandrei `and closed before the springs c are introduced. Thus the helical springs c will not be damaged by the soldering of the ends or any other parts of vthe links. The crosspins d of .the outer links e Workin the slots b. The main portion f, comprising the crown y and'setting h, is formed with two opposite short slotted links i of a length' about Ahalf that oflthe links a and each containing a single. helical spring such as the springs ff used in the said Alinks a.. The first and the last of the onli-.r links` e engage with the links and links a rcspectivel-v. 0b-
fected with a middle portion havin pinjointed links j such as are shown in for engagement with slotted links a; Fui'- ther, instead of the-crown g with setting i any other ornamental or plain partmay be adopted. Rings constructed with these lohgitudinally slotted middle links in combination with spring-controlled outer links will contract automatically and will readily expandto pass over the knuckle of a finger and then contract so as to frin a snug fit thereon. It will adapt itself to the shape and size of variousfingers of the hand and will yield to natural increase of plump'ness or loss of flesh of the hand, while insuring against unintentional slipping off and yt knuckles without the use of special means.
I claim I constructed with spring housings and having relatively narrow, longitudinal side slots, side links arranged on either side of the middlclin'ks, pins connected to said side housings and said pins, a` crown member, diametricallyopposed extensions carried by said crown member of a width substantially each of said extensions having adjacent its `end an arcuate slot, pins carried by the'end pins and the ends of the slots remote from thesetting. l -4 2. An expanding flexible ring or the like, comprising a series of hollow middle links,
side. of the middle links, pins constructed to pass endwise through said side slots, and to rotate therein and permit transverse flexibility in assembling the parts and having their ends rigidly connected to said side links and joining them together in pairs. springs substantially fitting'the spring housings, confined by the side walls thereof and located between the inner ends of said housallowing its easy removal over prominent 1. An expanding flexiblel ring construc-v tion. comprising a series of .middle'links l Patented Feb'. 21,1912` viously the same arrangement can be eflinks and. .joining them together in pairs, i i
cated between the inner ends of said spring equal to the widthof the spring housings,
pairs of said links working in sailslots and springs in said slots bearing between said constructed with spring housings and narj row s'ide slots, side links arranged on eitherings and the pins, a crown member, diain said slots and spzzings in said slots bearmetrically opposed extensions carried by ing between said pins and the ends of the said crown member of a Width substantially slots remote from the settin g. 4 'l equal -to the Width of the spring heus-1 EDVIN GEORGE HARROP.
