Be it known that I, MARY D. FIsHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluefield, in the county of Mercer and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible HatAnchors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in collapsible hat anchors.

One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character designed to be fastened to a hat box whereby a hat may be securely held and protected from damage in handling or when being delivered or shipped to a customer.

Another object is to provide a collapsible hat anchor constructed from a flat blank cut and adapted to be folded into the de sired shape or form and having means to detachably fasten the ends of the folded parts together to form the anchor.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat box with the cover removed showing my improved hat anchor arranged therein; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross sectional view of the same showing in dotted lines a hat secured to the anchor; Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which my improved anchor is formed.

By reference to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that my improved hat anchor is constructed from a blank cut from a single piece of paste-board or similar fiexiblematerial. In forming the blank the material is cut on its opposite edges to form pairs of substantially V-shaped notches 1 the material between which forms a rectangular base portion 2 of the anchor. The corners of the opposite ends of the base portion 2 are preferably cut ofl' at an angle as shown. The material on the opposite sides of the central or base portion 2 of the anchor forms flaps 3 and 4 which are of similar construction, each being somewhat longer than the narrow neck 20 between the Specification of Letters Patent.

notches 1 which neck connects it with the base 2. The outer edges of the flaps 3 and 4 are cut on a curve as shown at 5 and one end of each of said flaps is cut on an angle as shown at 6. The end of the flap 3 opposite to the angularly cut end has formed thereon a tongue 7, while the opposite end of the flap 4 has formed thereon a tongue 8. The tongues 7 and 8 have preferably formed on their opposite ends locking lugs 9 the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. In the flaps 3 and at adjacent to their angularly cut ends and opposite to the ends having the tongues are formed curved slots 10 and 11 adapted to receive the tongues whereby the flaps are held in operative position to form the anchor.

In forming the anchor the flaps 3 and 4 are folded upwardly and inwardly on the narrow necks 20 along the side edges of the base portion 2 and the flaps are then curved and their ends brought together and overlapped. When the ends of the flaps are thus brought together the tongue 7 of the flap 3 is inserted through the slot 11 of the flap 4L, and the tongue 8 of the flap 4 inserted through the slot 10 of the flap 3. When the tongues are thus inserted through the slots the locking lugs 9 on the opposite ends of said tongues hook into or engage the ends of the slots and thus form an interlocking connection between the tongues and the adjacent ends of the opposing flaps thereby securely fastening said fiaps together to form the frusto-conical shaped anchor or crown engaging portion as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing. When the anchor has thus been formed the base portion 2 is glued or otherwise securely fastened to the inside of the bottom of a hat box in position to receive the hat which is placed thereon and secured thereto by a hat pin or any other fastening device. When the hat is thus secured the same may be handled and delivered or shipped to a customer without danger of injuring or displacing any of the trimming thereon.

Fromthe foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended clann.

Having thus What I claim is:

The herein described hat anchor made from a single piece of sheet material and comprising a base of substantially rectangular shape, integral and substantially rectangular flaps at opposite sides of said base and connected therewith by narrow necks, the edges of the blank being notched at both ends of each of said necks and the two flaps having slots at their respectively opdescribed invention,
